5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And when you're done, be sure to check out the other books in the series, as listed below. The sequel to Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep.

I have always struggled to play D&D due to time, work and commitment issues with groups. I gave this scenario a go. It worked out flawlessly, it is super intuitive, link clickable, I did not even print the maps out and Used adobe edit pdf to put temporary markers etc. I can highly recommend it. As a noob it's handy to buy the player rule book on dndbeyond as I'm using it quite extensively.

A question for the maker, the saving throw on strength of the death knight, when do you use this ? What about the death knights HP changing over the rounds, the values aren't the same ?

I just bought the 2nd scenario and will probably buy em all ! Please make more !!!

I won on the first go with a warlock and eldritch blasted my way through the game :), will play it again as DM and lead my 10y old daughter through it (will probably make her a unicorn character as she requested)

Got the FG’s mod but can not seem to find the Adventure booklet or Map booklet, any assistance on where to find these booklets would be most appreciated.

Hi Tim. What you'll want to do is comment on the product page for the FG mod, and Rob Twohy should be able to sort it out!

I just played through this adventure, checked the comments, got the whole forest area map, looks much better than my attempt to stick the pieces together in paint. Are the other two areas available as well?

I really enjoyed playing through it other then it really isn't written for the way I tend to approach things. Also "You brandish your weapon" was kind of amusing when your not actually holding a weapon. Also the event in area 8, I didn't see any option for how I would have normally tried to approach the DILLYDALLY. AMBUSH while they are still climbing down. It might have gotten me killed but I would have tried it. Burning hand upwards while they are using the handholds? Yes, please.

It also seems to be written for classes abilities come back only on long rests, I take hour-long short rest to recover class abilities, not always to regain HP.

I do own this, I bought it via the solo adventure bundle. Noticed this when I went to review the first part, The Dread Knight's Squire.

Hey, I would really like to buy this adventure, but I have a couple of questions. Do I have to control the "monsters" myself? Are there any NPC encounters where you can use your skills etc? Thanks in advance :)
Customer avatar
5E Solo G December 25, 2020 1:05 am UTC
Yes you do have to control the monsters yourself, although they do act according to certain tactics given in the adventure. But yes you have to make all the rolls for them etc. And as far as skill challenges goes, I've tried to include them where appropriate. There are also class-specific options as well.

This was great Really well written and a solid challenge. Had to try a couple times. I’d like to use this in Roll20 for my group if able. Do you have a version for that?
Thanks for the solo adventure. Was fun to play since I DM right now.

Hi Todd, glad you enjoyed it. As far as a group challenge goes, this is in fact solely written as a solo adventure. However if you scroll down the comments you'll find a link to the full map which you can use to run this as a group game. I'd go with a maximum of three players at level 1, and possible add a few extra monsters!

I am a DM looking for adventures to run for one player (with the possible addition of a NPC sidekick). Has anyone tried this adventure, and the others in this series, for that purpose? Does it work well? Is it easy to convert to one-on-one play? Recommendations?

It was really good and intriguing. I think your party would have fun at low level here

Is there a recommended Level 1 solo adventure for getting a character up to level for this one?

I highly recommend either Shipwrecked or Eight Petals Argent

Is this part of a bundle in the sense that if I have bought one of the adventures a discount will be applied to the remaining ones?

Hello! I have no experience with the Forgotten Realms setting. Is that a problem for this adventure? Should I study up on it first or is it not needed?
Customer avatar
5E Solo G July 26, 2020 7:09 pm UTC
No, it's not needed. There's no lore that you will need to know in order to participate in this adventure.

Here There Be Spoilers (sort of).

I ran this with a friend recently, and we both enjoyed it; now I'm preparing to run it for another friend, so I'm going through it to see what he might run into that I missed. I had seen that Tilepages 13 & 14 appeared to form a maze/loop of some sort (13 fits in the same place as 12 and goes back to 11, forward to a nonexistent(?) 15, or to the right into 14. 14 goes back to 13 or south to 12.), and I assumed we had just missed/avoided it, but now I'm searching the .pdf and the comments and can't find a single reference to these pages! Are they used for something and I'm just not seeing it, were they included accidentally, or were they perhaps made for a part of the adventure that didn't make the final cut?

Both of these pages have green dots to investigate, but neither of them are part of the full map. What am I missing?

Quick question about the Sword of the Goddess's Wrath and the damage it deals.

It's normal damage is 1d8 plus 1d4 fire.
Against undead attack is +2 but the damage stays the same at 1d8 plus 1d4 fire? Or is the damage to undead in addition to the normal damage, so effectively doubled?

Entry number is 056.00 Darkquest

Thanks, and I'm really enjoying this so far.

I'm so excited to play this adventure and I'm so impressed so far but I was wondering if you could offer some advice? I know if you play with two players you can just double the # of monsters, however, I was curious as to whether you had advice on how to scale with 3 players?

Thank you so much,

My wife's been trying to play this adventure (a good oportunity to get acquainted with D&D), but she got stuck on page 24: "Go to tilepage 1 (Maps Booklet) and
then click this link to go to the entry."
This internal link doesn't seem to be there.

Any help? She's tried it from her Android tablet (Xodo app) and PC (Acrobat Pro XI).

Oye José, sí, la razón es porque el mapa que estás buscando está en el "Libro de mapas" que está disponible como una descarga separada con el producto. Deberías tener acceso a ella. No hay ningún enlace en el pdf, pero podrás encontrar fácilmente el mapa dentro del pdf.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
