5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And when you're done, be sure to check out the other books in the series, as listed below. The sequel to Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep.

I liked the game well enough - there were times that the options given didn't fit my character and stealing a horse they would never have done... however my main gripe was the ending I had mentioned a blood Knight's words ringing in my ears- I'd never met a blood knight...

Still I enjoyed it and have bouth the 2nd one. Got a bit more out the play through by padding it out with the travel rules from the solo adventure toolbox.

Where is the Maps Booklet? Was it supposed to come with this adventure? I assumed it was after looking for it online thinking it was separate and could not find it. Yet there is no link within the adventure (that I can find, as I am playing it now) that brings it up. I feel kind of lost without maps if I am supposed to use them. What gives?

Edit: Nevermind. I found it, and downloaded from my purchase history here. Some things never come easy to me, I downloaded the adventure four days ago. *sigh*

Fantastic work by the way, I loved it! And I plan to revisit with new characters and new choices sometime in the near future.

Spoilers ahead!! :

I rolled poorly most of the game until the very end, but managed to not only sneak up on the Death Knight and also hit him with an arrow while hidden, but also then win initiative! As a paladin, I was already planning a Divine Smite, but happened to ALSO roll a critical hit and fell the Death Knight before he ever got a chance to attack. In the INITWON choice block, it never took into account him actually having been defeated prior to attacking, so I still had to "go through the motions" to get to the victory section.

Is this good for a total beginner? It will be my first ever encounter of anything D&D related?
Thank you

Oh ok. As your first D&D experience I would probably recommend a group D&D game, if you can get one. Even on Roll20. That will help to put the concept of solo adventures in context.

Hi again, wondering if you could respond to this. It states on page 3 "If you are a DM and want to run this as an adventure with multiple PCs, contact me through DM’s Guild (leave a comment on this product’s page) and I will supply you with the complete map."
Wondering if I can get the complete map.
Thanks

I have always struggled to play D&D due to time, work and commitment issues with groups. I gave this scenario a go. It worked out flawlessly, it is super intuitive, link clickable, I did not even print the maps out and Used adobe edit pdf to put temporary markers etc. I can highly recommend it. As a noob it's handy to buy the player rule book on dndbeyond as I'm using it quite extensively.

A question for the maker, the saving throw on strength of the death knight, when do you use this ? What about the death knights HP changing over the rounds, the values aren't the same ?

I just bought the 2nd scenario and will probably buy em all ! Please make more !!!

I won on the first go with a warlock and eldritch blasted my way through the game :), will play it again as DM and lead my 10y old daughter through it (will probably make her a unicorn character as she requested)

I just played through this adventure, checked the comments, got the whole forest area map, looks much better than my attempt to stick the pieces together in paint. Are the other two areas available as well?

I really enjoyed playing through it other then it really isn't written for the way I tend to approach things. Also "You brandish your weapon" was kind of amusing when your not actually holding a weapon. Also the event in area 8, I didn't see any option for how I would have normally tried to approach the DILLYDALLY. AMBUSH while they are still climbing down. It might have gotten me killed but I would have tried it. Burning hand upwards while they are using the handholds? Yes, please.

It also seems to be written for classes abilities come back only on long rests, I take hour-long short rest to recover class abilities, not always to regain HP.

Hey, I would really like to buy this adventure, but I have a couple of questions. Do I have to control the "monsters" myself? Are there any NPC encounters where you can use your skills etc? Thanks in advance :)
Customer avatar
5E Solo G December 25, 2020 1:05 am UTC
CREATOR
Yes you do have to control the monsters yourself, although they do act according to certain tactics given in the adventure. But yes you have to make all the rolls for them etc. And as far as skill challenges goes, I've tried to include them where appropriate. There are also class-specific options as well.

This was great Really well written and a solid challenge. Had to try a couple times. I’d like to use this in Roll20 for my group if able. Do you have a version for that?
Thanks for the solo adventure. Was fun to play since I DM right now.

Hi Todd, glad you enjoyed it. As far as a group challenge goes, this is in fact solely written as a solo adventure. However if you scroll down the comments you'll find a link to the full map which you can use to run this as a group game. I'd go with a maximum of three players at level 1, and possible add a few extra monsters!

I am a DM looking for adventures to run for one player (with the possible addition of a NPC sidekick). Has anyone tried this adventure, and the others in this series, for that purpose? Does it work well? Is it easy to convert to one-on-one play? Recommendations?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
