5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And make sure to follow this publisher (5e Solo Gamebooks) to stay informed about future gamebook releases.

I'm trying my hand at an evil character and he's pretty excited about this pact with the Blood Knight. He managed to kill the DK, but the adventure doesn't provide for my character to return the sword as requested. I'm guessing this story line carries through in later campaigns, but does it account for the character being a willing participant in the pact? I'm not sure where to take this.

AWESOME solo campaign, by the way. This is my first, and I was unsure how difficult it would be to navigate. But the interface was really easy and the maps were great.

Question - Could this work for 2 people playing remotely over fantasy grounds or Roll20? Would like to use it to run a bicoastal no-dm game with a buddy. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi!
Any translation coming?
I'm looking forward to play it, but since English is not my first language i'm afraid i won't be fully enjoying the experience.

Can you sort out a POD option for these solo adventures?

Hey Dan, I'm actually in the process of getting this adventure (Death Knight's Squire) to print. Once that goes through, print versions will be purchasable on DM's Guild. Depending on how it sells, I might do the same with the others!

Can someone tell me exactly what I need to play this? I see tokens to represent party/monsters but what else? I assume a set of dice? Will I need the D&D 5 players guide?
Will be running through this solo and it will be my first ever D&D session, although I have been wanting to do it for 25 years!

Hey Thomas, the PHB would be handy, but everything you need is detailed in the introduction of the book. Obviously dice, a new Level 2 PC, and yes tokens are handy. Failing the PHB, you can pick up the basic rules on the WOTC website.

Random correction suggestion, in case the product is still being updated:
On Tilepage 2, I suspect "Return to tilepage 1" should read "Return to the tilepage you came from".

If you're replying anyway, I'm a little unclear on whether the character on Tilepage 9 re-engages you upon return visits. I was unable to find a clear intention in the rules or the encounter text but the least broken answer appears to be, no, he's either not there or you can safely ignore him once you've engaged with him once, and I've gone with that.

Also in the entry "KNIGHTATTACK", "higher than your AC" should read "equal to or higher than your AC", I'm pretty sure.

First things first, I have really enjoyed this Solo adventure!

I'm looking for advice for an alternate, maybe unique circumstance, ending.

Spoilers Below:

Played through using a WM Sorcerer. Due to a series of fortunate rolls/decisions, stumbled upon and defeated DK without experiencing the majority of the quest book. During the DK fight, WMS table called up necrotic damage that not only provided a killing blow to DK, but technically also defenseless Darek. Since my character was in possession of the Red Tree Staff, but no knowledge of it's importance, and no means to revive Darek, the UNEASYVICTORY seems to be the most fitting end. However, how would his grandparents respond to Darek's death?

Hey Matthew
I really love that you're looking for a unique ending.
I think you're right that UNEASYVICTORY is the correct entry to end it on.
Darek's grandparents would be distraught, obviously. But perhaps you could bring his body back to Orlbar? There might be a mage there who could perform a resurrection of some kind? Also, at least then the grandparents would have his body back, and thus closure.
Lord Brewmont, being the honourable gentleman he is, would still pay your promised reward.

First, I want to thank you for creating this fantastic adventure. It is wonderful and allows me to play in between my weekly game wit ease. It is terrific fun and has more replayability than I first thought. As a bonus, it allows me to try different classes than I am used to. Worth Every Cent!

What solo adventure do you recommend for a level 1 PC as a prequel to this adventure?

5E Solo G July 15, 2018 2:29 pm UTC

I'd recommend having a look at "Dark Sorceries" by Abel Trotter. Or you could get "Merchant of Breckenwald" from drivethrurpg.com, which is a Pathfinder adventure but so easy to convert to 5e. It contains very standard D&D monsters, you can easily find their stats, and checks convert more or less straight to 5e with very little conversion.

If I load the individual maps into roll20, should I add the tilemaps together as I go (when I go from tilemap x -> y) building a big map or should I just load one at a time?

Just one at a time Frosti. No need to complicate things!

Hi Paul, I have a question about an item in the adventure: The Sword of the Goddess's Wrath: against an undead creature, does it do an extra 1d8 and the extra 1d4 fire? I am a bit confused by the wording.
Customer avatar
5E Solo G July 08, 2018 10:32 pm UTC
CREATOR
No, against undead it does the normal 1d8 (or 1d10 if 2-handed) slashing, but it gives the 1d4 fire and gives a +2 bonus to attack rolls. (The +2 bonus is the difference for undead)

If you want to go paperless, there are apps for maps and minis. I would recommend 3D virtual tabletop. I just used screen captures of the maps provided and found images I liked for the minis. I'm playing without a dm, a tabletop, or a mess.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
