Ruins of Hisari

ADD TO WISHLIST >

SOMETHING happened in Hisari. But no one knows what. Hidden in the jungles below the fuming volcano of the Sky Lizard Mountains lie the ruins of Chult's once mighty yuan-ti city, forgotten, abandoned and swallowed by the earth, surrounded by a magical ward that terrorizes all yuan-ti that dare return. Explore the underground temple and be the first to unbury its secrets... if you survive to tell the tale.

"Ruins of Hisari" is a 4-hour adventure for tier 3 characters levels 11-16 (APL 12) and can be played as an expansion to Tomb of Annihilation or as a standalone adventure. This adventure is permissable for D&D Adventurers League play!

Can this be run as an AL legal standalone adventure or should this be part of a hardcover of ToA?

Is there a printer-friendly version of this? Something more black and white?

Scribbly reviews: Ruins of Hisari
So many great ideas, and most of them work perfectly. The main villain is frieghtening as well as fascinating, and there are a few special effects here that are well worth playing. The only down side is it would have been so much more engaging if the second half of the story was more role play driven. Imagine looking a leader dead in the face and convincing them you are in fact a snake creature here to worship, as he stares back deciding your fate...
Instead a few punch ups and a boss battle.
Not to sound too down on this adventure, this is a great book to run. Plenty to explore and treasures to find.
This moduale actually shows one of the more difficult narrative issues presented in a dungeons and dragons game. When a place has a phenominal backstory, how do you show all the amazing ideas to a group of adventurer's pillaging the place. Like resident evil's "ithcy. tastey" note, the challenge for a dm here is to present the history in and interesting...See more

Neat yuan-ti adventure; very cool mechanic at the end but very little reason to explore once it happens since at that point you have a guide to the end. Would be cooler if you needed ritual materials spread around the caverns before going to the end. 3.5/5 stars

I am prepping to run this weekend, and I was wondering... the text on page 21 says "keeping their ability scores but losing their current racial features and gaining..." does this mean that the only gains and losses are those features that don't change ability scores? For example, a dwarf transforming would keep the +STR & +CON but lose the other stuff to gain this, correct? Similarly, a human transforming would lose the +1 skill and feat from 1st level but the +1 to two scores wouldn't change, yes?

Looking for an adventure that would allow my players to get a base of operations. Without spoilers would this adventure be able to grant Lawful/Good characters the ruins as a base?

I have now played this module twice and have enjoyed it very much both times. There is a lot of content; all of it good, but hour hours won't do it justice really. Having played twice it was interesting because it was two very different experiences due to time constraints what each DM chose to focus on. Without spoilers it is hard to say a lot other than I got to see monsters used in fun ways. There were some good problem solving encounters. If you consider running this one; maybe make it a two session thing and go all the way with it!

My two coppers.

The item from part 3 "No Littering" states it "acts as" not that it is. Clarifying if this is something the adventures get as a permanent item.

Cool, one more thing mechanic I'm uncertain of is the tainted blood thing. Is there a downtime requirement for adventurers league players? there was not one listed(unless a more recent upload had that). Also the change would get rid of a human variants feat correct? (Able to find some ruling about changing but only dealt with factions

Also just want to say how much I enjoyed ruling this mod in AL! There aren't many adventures for AL that have the amount of roleplay opportunity that this mod has. It was a lot of fun and thanks for the work on this one!

That is a great question. Guild Adept products are written first and then approved for AL play on a case by case basis. For now, this doesn’t have a downtime cost, but I’ll poke the admins if they want to require one and adjust if necessary (along with clarification about the item in your previous comment).

Thank you SO much for noticing the role play opportunities!! Those are my favorite thing as a player, so I peppered them in as much I could. I really appreciate the kind and thoughtful words.

Hi, can you give an estimated run time for this module please? A Target Adventure Level or APL would be useful too. Helps for scheduling them for local and convention play. Thanks!

Hi Michael! This info is on the cover and/or in the PDF, but I'll update the description above for easy reference. I playtested this in a 4-hour time slot, but for con-planning purposes, I'll just warn that this does pack a LOT of content if the characters try to explore every inch of the adventure. I recommend cutting out some or even all of part 1 if there are very strict time constraints.

Is it just me, or do the preview links not work?
The Quick Preview gives me a blank preview window, while the full-size opens another dmsguild pop-up with "page not found" and a suggestion to search the site for the title "waiting for previous preview regen".

Hey, thanks for pointing that out! I guess because I've included the image files for the maps in this download... it messed up the preview function that only works with PDF files. I've turned the preview off, so other folks don't get confused. Sorry about that!

People like a glimpse of what they're buying so I recommend turning the previews back on. The trick is that the preview function attempts to preview the first file you upload. Delete, re-up, starting with the .pdf and it should work.

I can't honestly review this yet, since I have not read much of it. But I will say that it ias the most visually pleasing maps. Compared to the obvious computer drawn or lackluster maps I have seen in other Cult based adventures, the pencil maps style is both visually clear and elegant.

I also like the other artwork, and the theme, as well as the descriptions of the actions and motives of the NPCs.

My only regret is that I might not be able to run this adventure for about a year, since we will be starting at 1st level and don't meet up as often as I would like. But that was my choice. I hope to see some work like this for lower level PCs.

Your comment - especially about the maps - makes my heart soar. My cartographer Jess is a dear D&D buddy of mine, and we were so deliberate about the style for the maps that it is great to hear it was appreciated. I will be sure to share your words with her.

I hope you'll come back to let us know how it goes if you do eventually run this adventure. I'll keep lower level adventures in mind for next time!

In the symbols puzzle, what is the difference between the symbol directly under the unmarked statue and the one directly across the room from it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
