UPDATE! FREE ENHANCEMENT OUT NOW!

Modrons, Mephits & Mayhem is a Dungeons & Dragons 5E tier 2 adventure for three to five characters of levels 5-8. It is primarily set in a modron-designed research facility that has been abandoned by its creators but retains guardians that are still active. On top of that, two groups have broken into the facility with their own goals in mind; the githyanki and their red dragon cohort are antagonistic and provide the main source of combat in this adventure, while a modron traveling with a few mephits may prove friendly...but ultimately troublesome.

Inspired by adventure games in which the protagonists explore baroque, esoteric technological fortresses, and seeded throughout with factions that sport competing and often bizarre goals, Modrons, Mephits & Mayhem is sure to test the mettle of any group of players, and will provide endless amusement for Dungeon Masters seeking something different from the typical hack-and-slash dungeon crawl.

(Feel free to check out the Free Preview Version of this adventure for a look at one whole dungeon level! And don't miss the free Enhancement that adds new challenges, monsters, and companion characters using books published since Modrons, Mephits & Mayhem was first designed!)

What does a "monitoring apparatus" look like and what does it do? Several are hidden or destroyed. But what can a PC do once they uncover one?

It's intentionally left vague for the DM to fill in the details (much like the controls to open doors), but I view it like a very retro-futuristic screen showing a view from a periscope-like "camera" positioned as described in the text. In at least one case, this "camera"-like lens is underwater, viewing the lake just beyond the facility, and thus allows you to view the fish (and other sea creatures) that dwell there.

Depending on your take on Modron technology, it could be more of computer viewscreen in the vein of something you'd see in ALIEN. Another great option would be to play/watch games like MYST, Riven, and stuff in that vein, and describe the technology as such. There are lots of viewscreens, periscope-like cameras, door controls, and things of that nature in those games. In fact, it was those games that inspired much of this facility's technology and puzzles.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
