Love the book. On page 56 for the description of shikaro, it mentions when making the spyhole subtly to make a dex(subterfuge) non paired check. Is subterfuge a typo? What skill should be listed.

What a strange error. It should be Deception.

I don't understand the point of antitoxins and antipathogens. A sinda berry dose is vastly more effective and at only a tenth of the cost. Either the prices were a typo or there should have been an indication of multiple doses in a container, because I cannot otherwise see a point in choosing either of them when sinda berries are better in every way.

Sinda berries were designed by Wizards of the Coast and placed in the Tomb of Annihilation adventure. Although I expand slightly on uses for naturally-potent flora, I try not to upset any of these pre-existing mechanics. Antipathogen is purely analogous in system to antitoxin (a standard item from the Player's Handbook), which is another system I didn't feel comfortable upsetting.

So, the answer to your question is that Wizards of the Coast created some odd disparities in the systems, and I'm trying to keep everything as close to the standard rules as possible. My goal is to provide more options rather than changing existing ones.

In my (Forgotten Realms) campaign, players can't find Sinda berries outside of Chult. I also use the optional rule for formulas, making cheaper, stronger concoctions harder to craft. (I also limit their appearance in apothecary shops.)

Guess I'll just have to houserule that each vial has about ten uses. That way an 8-hour advantage on only diseases for about 3 gp. per dose is pretty reasonable (while still being a drain on poorer folk), while the extremely potent and versatile sinda berries are about 5 gp per dose (which is more effective for more dire situations but is at a premium compared to antipathogens).

I can see your dilemma however in wanting to not rock the boat too much with regards to some of WOTC's alchemical or herbal substances.

I noticed you've got a few psionic items in the Equipment Manual, and on page 112 they mention a "Wraith Wright’s Comprehensive Psionics Manual."

Is that still in the works? I can't seem to find it on DM's Guild yet.

It's still happening. It's a huge project and includes several volumes. For example, one volume covers all the unique psionic races from all the editions of D&D. One volume covers all psionic magic items from all the editions. One covers 3 unique classes that represent the core concepts of earlier psionicists. (These have been in playtest for 2 years.) One is just psionic monsters and psionic templates for monsters. Yet another is a deep dive into the Far Realm and the psionic nightmares therein. The project is so large and our team is so small that we don't expect completion until next year.

PS: This was the project that made us regret using "comprehensive" as our brand identity. :D

The Guild is only allowing PoD for a small handful of titles; they don't have the personnel to manage anything more. Unfortunately, they're currently only accepting PoD for new, large titles. This is a somewhat-recent change in their policies. To address this, I am researching how to create files suitable for using other PoD services so I can package them with the PDFs.

Would you consider a service like Lulu or even Drivethrurpg, or are you forbidden by DMsguild licensing?
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P July 04, 2019 2:06 pm UTC
CREATOR
The licensing for DMs Guild requires there be no other points of distribution. Also, Drivethrurpg sometimes flags materials that are just there for PoD, being linked from somewhere else. It's a sadly complicated scenario.

EDIT: Let me add, DMs Guild is currently trying to work out a scenario where they can accept more PoD submissions. The problem is it takes so much back-and-forth with OBS employees to get the files correct, and the test printings cost them materials too.

Any chance of pulling back the curtain on your magic item pricing?
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P March 09, 2019 6:20 pm UTC
CREATOR
The magic item pricing mechanism is pretty hefty, a document about 13 pages long. It's too big for comment on this page. I've considered cleaning it up and putting it in my blog, which doesn't get much use right now. It would be nice if there was a reference point for that mechanism so DMs could price their own stuff within the CEM's ranges, or to price magic items from recent books.

I've also considered blogging about the weapon-balancing point system, which breaks down and scores all existing weapons and then fits new weapons into those balance numbers. That one's about four pages long.

I understand it's way too long for a comment page, but would love to see it. I'd even pay for it. :)

I currently am converting Pathfinder adventure paths to 5e at my table, and occasionally "need" to homebrew magic gear.

I'd pay a modest fee to know know and understand that sort of breakdown, so that one could price homebrewed magic items to fit in line instead of just guessing based on items similar in power.

Very awesome book that fills out a lot of what was missing. Love the light touch on the rules as well. Quick question that I didn't see asked.

For mounts, it reads that the combat training and exceptional specimen benefits can stack. When combining the cost, would you take the base value then do each multiplication separate (base x 5) x4, or add the multipliers together for a 9x increase?
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P March 06, 2019 1:54 pm UTC
CREATOR
It would be a x9 increase. Each effect is described as an "additional" cost that is based on the "listed" value of the animal. It's not meant to contemplate a modified value from other effects.

Question on the Naginata; is it correct that it lacks the two-handed property? While the munchkin in me is happy to see a one-handed polearm with reach that works with Great Weapon Master while also using a shield to do 1d10+1 damage, that seems a bit excessive.

I would hold off on buying a PoD version. We're shooting for May as the next release, and we're taking down the PoD option for this version just a few days. (Don't want anyone to buy PoD just a couple of months prior to a new version.) However, PoD won't be immediately available for the next version; there's a process that takes an unknown amount of time, maybe a couple of more months on top of that.

For anyone buying just the normal version, buying now is ok since you'll get access to the new version on this product page when it comes out, without any additional costs.

I'm considering this book... any chance of adding all of the mundane items from Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue? We STILL use that book even to this day.
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P February 01, 2019 2:33 am UTC
CREATOR
We studied Aurora's when we designed the first version of the Comprehensive Equipment Manual, along with every edition's expanded equipment supplements. Aurora's is a tricky beast to include everything from because so much equipment is now subsumed into kits, packs, and artisan's tools. We translated everything we could use from that book, but the whole point of Aurora's was to be a Sears-style catalogue of the mundane, large and small--that doesn't really work unless the whole book follows that design. Our product is closer in form to such things as the Arms & Equipment Guides (2nd and 3rd Editions), Complete Adventurer (3rd Edition), and similar books.

Yes, a new version is coming in about 2 months (Revision 3--2019).

If you get the PDF now, you still get the new files free when they come out, but that can't be said for the print-on-demand version. ;-)

The medieval firearms list gives the firearms there the breaching (2) property, allowing them to penetrate armor more effectively. None of the renaissance and machine-age firearms have this property. Should they?
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P December 27, 2018 6:33 am UTC
CREATOR
The later-stage firearms apply this property through their ammunition rather than having it as an inherent weapon property. There were a couple of reasons for this but, primarily, it's to keep the property from applying when shot (pellet) rounds are loaded. For example, attacks with cartridge rounds (machine-age firearms) have breach, but attacks with shotshells do not.

Quick question. There is a war elephant on the cover. I’d there a price and perhaps stats for war elephants within?
Customer avatar
Wraith Wright P August 26, 2018 12:58 pm UTC
CREATOR
We do not have a separate war elephant listing. Instead, we have a "combat trained" template, which can be applied to the elephant (and the mastiff, pony, giant lizard, camel, aurochs, or whatever other mount you buy.) We extrapolated this template from the Player's Handbook, looking at the difference between a riding horse and a warhorse. A combat-trained animal gets better hit dice, ability scores, and a slam attack.

The "combat trained" template lists the cost and benefits of such an upgrade. There is also an "exceptional specimen" template that makes a tougher version of an animal. Its purpose is to make animal companions and mounts more survivable, for a cost. Although it's very expensive, a character could have an animal with both templates. This solves the problem of higher-level characters' animals dying every session to random fireballs.

The only fully-new animal we added (with a listed stat block instead of a template) is the "fragile horse."...See more

* Added a Metal-Poor Apocalypse exotic list to help STs run metal-poor regions or metal-poor worlds.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
