The Weeping Revenant

ADD TO WISHLIST >

For generations the Marescu family governed the towns and villages of the northern Svalich Woods with justice and integrity. A single night of terrible evil caused it all to crumble. Today the once formidable Marescu Keep lies in ruins deep in the Svalich Woods and an undead horror stalks the shores of Lake Zarovich.

The townspeople of Riciu have learned to fear the dark shores of Lake Zarovich on moonless nights when black clouds blot out the starlight. Rumor, spoken only in hushed whispers, tells of a mournful and bewitching song that plays among the forest trees along the shoreline. Find the right person in the right tavern, get him several tankards into his ale, and a story emerges—remarkably consistent storyteller to storyteller—of a weeping maiden, haunting in her beauty, whose presence means certain death to all but the most fortunate.

The Weeping Revenant is the first title in the Desolation of Marescu™ series. The adventure is designed to function either as a stand-alone adventure in an unexplored corner of your campaign world or as a side adventure within a Curse of Strahd campaign. Designed for four 3rd to 5th level characters, it contains difficulty adjustment suggestions for parties of both higher and lower character levels.

This adventure guide contains a complete story arch that combines an array of engaging monster encounters with a custom NPC interaction mechanic that replicates the challenge of gathering information from suspicious inhabitants in a village where everyone knows everyone and word of your successes and failures can race from person to person well ahead of you. In addition, this adventure guide includes several 5th edition conversions:

  • three monsters absent from the Monster Manual and Volo’s Guide to Monsters
    • the Crypt Chanter, a spectral being whose haunting melody will transfix you with its beauty while it drains the life from your soul
    • the Entomber, a terrifying abomination of necromancy that will quite literally beat you into an early grave
    • the Murk, a thin, vaporous vestige of a being with an insatiable craving for your life-force.
  • one magic item absent from the Dungeon Master’s Guide
    • the Phylactery of Undead Turning

It is at least a six-hour or solid afternoon of gaming depending on how your group paces itself.

The full-size preview is now working. I had to right-click and select a different view option (e.g. two-page view) to make the viewer refresh.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
