Chosen of the Gods

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Chosen of the Gods is a player and DM resource detailing the Chosen of the Forgotten Realms - mortals selected to fulfill the will of the gods. Rules, Inspiration, Feats, and Roleplaying Details for 50 different Chosen of Faerûn.

 - "Follow me!" The Chosen of Torm, the Loyal Fury, cries out at the head of the battle line. His sword blazes with golden light as his warhorse rears. "Follow me, men! Evil does not prevail tonight!"

- Urku scratched impatiently under his eyepatch. These Orcs were too eager for bloodshed, and knew nothing of empire. Urku knew that Gruumsh had chosen him to lead his people to empire. First, however, Urku would have to unite the tribes.

- Liilue wiped her chin after drawing the last of her healing potion and winced in pain. Her Harper pin had been spotted by the sharp-eyed bullyboy who even now was chasing her. Selûne's presence was still with her, and cool power surged into her hands. She had a few more tricks up her sleeves.

- Hunted, the Chosen of Asmodeus, Lord of the Hells, crouched in a dingy alley. He observed the guard captain quietly, his mind filling with the captain's deepest desires - and weaknesses.

Live the heroic stories of the Chosen of the Gods. Answer the call of adventure, or hide from your heroic destiny. Resist the evil gifts of malevolent deities, or give in to the temptation of evil power. Carve your own divine path through the Forgotten Realms!

Hello, are there any chances of reviewing these and rewriting them in the flavor of WotC's published 5E Chosen templates? They have published two now: Auril and Bhaal. The templates are considerably more powerful than just a feat however still much less impactful than previous editions.

Johnathan, thanks for asking. I was definitely inspired by the templates available in the two D&D Next Playtest adventures - Legacy of the Crystal Shard is my favorite of the playtest adventures released in 2013.

The Feats approach is intentional and was developed alongside the playtest of this project, players liked abilities that matched the power of the table.

Hey there! Super late to the show, but as I'm just now getting into "The Chosen" novels (three books in) and was wondering whether this is edition specific, or if it's for 5th or?

This is a 5th edition supplement, and I drew from the books and RPG supplements to find a playable middle ground between realms-shattering-power and parlor trick. I hope these feats and traits help build characters that feel like they could have stepped out of the novels.

Hi! Any chance for the Dwarven Pantheon, specifically Marthammor Duin??

Oh man, Dwarves are my fascinating. Marthammor Duin is a great "deep cut". I think the most unique thing about the dwarven gods are their "family" dynamic, and how rooted to the material world they are. So chosen for Dwarven gods might mean something more tangible, or performative, than just a sort of watered-down "aspect". For example, maybe a Chosen of Moradin is a hermit smith who spends 60 years forging an epic battleaxe. Or a chosen of Dumathoin is a woman washing the laundry of a great lord in far-off Durpar, overhearing secrets of a strange land. I'd want to lean in to object, places, people more than many of the feats in this book. Chosen of the Dwarven gods would be incredibly selfless, rarely glory seekers. One who strikes with Clangeddin's fury will be the brave dwarf who defends the mountain pass from a hundred orcs, discovered only tendays later, his arrow-pierced body atop a host of dead enemies. So: Yeah, I love Dwarves.

Hey, you talk about a future guide for the other pantheons in the Forgotten Realms, how close is that book to coming out?

Hi Jasmine! I am planning to have the next one out by end of year. It will feature the Seldarine and Dark Seldarine, the Elf and Drow pantheons, respectively.

So Eilistraee will be included. Sweet. Will it have a similar name as this or will it be distinctly different?

Is the first ability in the Chosen of Mystra feat supposed to allow for constant use of Detect Magic, or does it still take a slot to case even though you don't have to prepare it?

This is a good question. The design intent is that this feature functions similar to a cleric’s domain spells. A better wording is:

“ You always have the “Detect Magic” spell prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.

If “Detect Magic“ doesn’t appear on the any of your classes’ spell lists, the spell is nonetheless a spell for any of your classes with the Spellcasting feature.”

Is the stuff in here based off from the info we got in other books about Chosen at all? Like Laeral Silverhand in Dragonheist or the Bhaal and Aurill from the old DND Next modules?

The resources this book drew from are Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, the various Forgotten Realms settings and deities books, and the recent D&D next modules. It is particularly inspired by the Sundering D&D novels released in the year before 5e, which featured many Chosen.

Love your book and might use it as inspiration but I must ask, since I plan on blessing my Sorcerer/Wizard in my campaign with Mystra’s blessing, why isn’t there any mention of the Chosen of Mystra’s Silver Fire? It’s kinda their staple and what most of their gifts stem from. Not a complaint just curious.

I'm so glad someone asked about this! Silver Fire as presented in the novels was very hard to quantify in a satisfying way. In an earlier draft, the casting of spells from the weave (which is in the final version) was replaced by silver fire, that allowed a chosen of mystra to utilize silver fire as a beam of light for damage, or to hold it and feed it to another using the chosen's spell slots as either healing, or to give other arcane casters spell slots back. It was too fiddly, in the end, a relic of older non-5e approaches where things were wild and less streamlined.

Ultimately, when play testing, the version presented in the pdf was more playable and fun than a more old-school approach, and from a lore perspective matched better some of the latter Blackstaff and Elminster lore at a cost of leaving behind an iconic but problematic (gameplay-wise) ability.

Aw, heck, here is the "Silver Fire" variant of the Chosen of Mystra, presented here, just for you and my fellow realms buffs:

Chosen of Mystra

Neutral Good goddess of Magic Prerequisite: 1 level in Bard, Ranger, Rogue, Sorceror, or Wizard; Spellcasting class feature

• Mark of Mystery. You can directly view the Weave of magic in your surroundings. You learn the Detect Magic spell, and you may cast it without preparing it.

• Arcane Inspiration. Once per day, during a short or long rest, you may choose to expend a spell slot of level 2 or higher to make repairs to the Weave. If you do, you and up to 5 allies gain a point of Inspiration.

• Work of Silver Fire. You gain a number of Silver Fire points equal to your spellcasting ability modifier. As an action, you may spend these Silver Fire points to cause any of the following effects.
-1 point: You transfer one spell that you have prepared from your spell sheet to another character's...See more

For some reason your comment about the Silver Fire variant cuts off, maybe it can added to the next PDF you make to include the Elf deities.

Any plans for an update for more deitys, or just plan to have it as it is? Say maybe including Bahamut? Only fair, what with Tiamat being in there ;-)

Bahamut is kinda-sorta-Torm, but there will be a follow up to this book with other options. Specifically, the Elven and Dwarven pantheons (who give boons, rather than take Chosen), and the Monstrous pantheons including Draconic, who *do* take Chosen.

Still working on this but focusing on the Elven pantheon. Looking to release by end of year based on play testing. Design is still centered around the feat system, based on feedback from my players.

This is a fantastic addition to the player options. It provides a really nice bit of diversity to the rule set, managing to be useful and novel, but without breaking the game balance. The options all feel like the make a big impact on your character, but all within the parameters of the game. Additionally, they provide a crunchy path to deity driven story and character hooks. Well written and organized, this is a must have.

I'll write a review once I get more time to read and possibly play-test this, but just some initial thoughts at first glance, I really like this! Pretty well written and formatted. Some of it may be a little overpowered, but you're playing as a Chosen! It should be something special. And it is powerful enough to feel special, but not so powerful it will kill the enjoyment for the other players. Similar to finding a strong magical item. My own personal use for this is at the end of my campaigns, I have a post-climax finale type dungeon where the players are destined to die, and it's almost a competition of sorts. They get points based on roleplaying, killing, and whoever lasts the longest in this dungeon of death. At the end, whoever wins gets to start the next campaign with a bonus. This will probably be that bonus if one of two out of my four players come out on top.

Thanks, Cody! In playtesting and feedback, a lot of the notes were players wanted more from the feats. In particular, we pushed the "evil" ones a little farther since they were less likely to appear in more "balanced" campaigns. Thanks for buying Chosen of the Gods!

For the "Chosen of Mystra", is there a reason warlocks can't be chosen? Celestial warlocks are a thing so it's not an issue of alignment. Or would it be too complicated?

Real late to this but: Mystra rewards service and the love of magic for its own sake. Warlocks draw power not through her Weave, per se, but rather they siphon the power of another being directly. A warlock pacted to a Malebranche can do magic, but serves Mystra not at all. My "gut" is that a Chosen of mystra would marvel at what a warlock can do, and find their pact curious and interesting, but consider the whole affair in "bad taste".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
