In Search of the Unknown - Realistic Maps

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Virtual tabletop dungeon maps of the classic TSR module "B1 In Search of the Unknown". It's intended for online play, but it can be printed out and used on the tabletop.

The digital download includes 2 realistic maps:

  • First floor - JPEG file with the resolution of 10,200 by 12,900 pixels
  • Second floor - JPEG file with the resolution of 9,900 by 13,650 pixels

The maps are designed with a 5 ft. grid, which corresponds to one inch at 150dpi. You can divide the pixels by 150 to get the number of squares for roll20 or other virtual tabletops.

If you want to print it out there are some great guides online for just that. Search for "print dungeon maps".

Check out my other realistic maps!

I LOVE these maps. I use them for play on Roll20, and they've worked perfectly. They're absolutely gorgeous. I was running the campaign with scans of the original B1 maps, and switched to these halfway through. My players were completely blown away. My only wish is that you'd revisit them and add some of the additional maps that were created for the Goodman Games "Original Adventures Reincarnated" version. Thanks so much for the work you put into these!!!

Hi, I love these maps! However, I am having problems printing them off for tabletop. I have acess to a 40x40 printer, but at max size the best I can manage is about 3/4" square grid, and the map is a full 40x40. I put the dpi in at 150 and this was the result. Suggestions?

The map is actually 68 by 86 (the upper level), so it won't print on 40 by 40. You can try using Photoshop (or a free program like Gimp) to cut up the maps for printing.

First off, I want to say I'm a fan of your maps. I bought these and the caves of chaos ones. However, when imported into a virtual tabletop (I'm using Foundry VTT), the grid does not appear fully squared. If I get the grid overlay in Foundry lined up perfectly in the center, the sides, top and bottom were shifted. I don't have this problem with other maps I've used. For the Caves of Chaos maps, the solution was easy, I lined the grid up as close as possible, then used the the images you supplied without the printed grid. However, these maps (In Search of the Unknown) do not have gridless versions.

I think that's because the PPI is not the Foundry VTT standard of 70ppi. You can scale the maps in Gimp or similar free software.

Hey Jon, I'm a big fan of your maps. I have a youtube channel reviewing old school modules and I'm featuring your stuff, with links. I just did Castle Amber, and my next video will feature this module. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDY38N7kqibfYXX7jSbJNsg?view_as=subscriber

Would it scale out right if printed on 36 x 48 paper

it's actually twice that size. You can print sections and slice them up. There are plenty of tutorials online. Search for "print dungeon maps".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
