{OAP} The Elementalist Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Outlandish Adventure Productions presents:

The Elementalist, a half-caster class of primordial power with a martial arts flair! Elementalists control the raw energies of the four Prime Elements through forming a connection to the Elemental Planes. With their Elemental Strike, a versatile blast of raw elemental energy that acts as a weapon, an elementalist can strike from nearly any position on the battlefield, and can do so with style. Elementalists are defined by their choice of Prime Element, which determines the element over which they hold sway, as well as their spell list and spellcasting ability, and their choice of Control Style, which influences how they approach combat and exploration. This combination of choices leads to an incredible amount of build diversity.

Prime Elements

Air - You've formed a connection with the Plane of Elemental Air, a realm of unending sky and untainted breeze. This tranquil realm's energies are best controlled by an elementalist who's achieved spiritual tranquility, making your spellcasting ability Wisdom. Your features and spells emphasize mobility and controlling enemy positioning.

Earth - You've formed a connection with the Plane of Elemental Earth, a realm of stillness and great expanses of stone and rock. This stubborn and willful realm requires an elementalist of even greater force of will to control its energies, making your spellcasting ability Charisma. Your features and spells emphasize durability and environmental control.

Fire - You've formed a connection with the Plane of Elemental Fire, a realm of inexhaustible flame and devouring conflagrations. This ambitious and passionate realm's energies can best be controlled by an elementalist of strong emotions and ardor, making your spellcasting ability Charisma. Your features and spells emphasize dazzling your enemies and burning them to a crisp.

Water - You've formed a connection with the Plane of Elemental Water, a realm of constant rhythm, the ebb and flow of the tides. The energies of this flowing realm are best controlled by an elementalist who can perceive and join water's natural dance, making your spellcasting ability Wisdom. Your features and spells emphasize increasing your allies' effectiveness and locking your enemies down.

Control Styles

Avatar - You form weaker connections with the other Elemental Planes, allowing you to tap into their energies and choose spells from the other elementalist spell lists.

Contractor - You train in the arts of stealth and assassination, increasing the range of your elemental strike and learning methods for avoiding detection.

Spirit Bridge - You expand your awareness of realms outside the Material Plane to include the Ethereal Plane, granting you a special bond with spirits.

Warrior - You train in the art of weapon warfare, learning to weave weapon attacks betwixt your elemental strikes.

Also, the Elementalist Class comes with 9 new spells usable by elementalists and a number of other classes!

And in the Outlandish Elements supplement, there are even more options for playing an elementalist!

We hope you enjoy the Elementalist as much as we and our players do! We'd love to hear your feedback, so please send us any questions or comments you have. Also, if you perceive any balance issues, please let us know and we will address them as quickly as we can.

Update History

2/23/2018 v1.2 - Many of these changes are aimed at quality of life, clarity, and slight balance tweaks:

  • All instances of "elementalist spell slot" have been changed to "spell slot" to make multiclassing a bit less punishing.
  • The Avatar Control Style's 10th- and 15th-level features were buffed to make it much less situational.
  • The Contractor Control Style was buffed to make becomign hidden from enemies less of a hassle.
  • The spell lists were updated to include spells from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

7/24/2017 v1.1 - We made a number of changes and additions aimed at making readability and at-a-glance character creation a bit simpler. In order of appearance:

  • Significantly cut down the opening lore section
  • Changed some feature and subclass names to increase clarity and readability when looking at the progression table
  • Added new equipment option for elementalists with no plan to wear armor
  • Added Prime Element Abilities table to aid at-a-glance build theorizing
  • Added some new small art elements to add character and personality to the document
  • Made some small grammar and spelling fixes
  • Adjusted some wording for quality of life purposes

7/13/2017 v1.0Original Elementalist Class uploaded.

when you use your elemental strike to attack a creature within 5 feet of you, you can choose to make the elemental strike as a melee weapon attack.
Strike Weaving: When you make a ranged elemental strike, you do not suffer disadvantage due to being within 5 feet of a hostile creature.
so im confused do i make the melee attacks with disadvantage

Nope, your melee attacks will work normally, only usable within reach and only having disadvantage when effects impose disadvantage on them. Strike Weaving only impacts your *ranged* elemental strike which, like any ranged attack, would normally have disadvantage due to a hostile creature being within 5 feet of you; Strike Weaving simply removes that disadvantage.

Finally getting around to playing this class. Really looking forward to it but I do have a question does anyone have any suggestions on how to flavor a fire Elementalist using lightning or electricity in general for their abilities before i reach level 14?

In my mind, the best way to do it is to incorporate into your character's backstory and personal journey. Perhaps they had a mentor or childhood hero that could do it, and they're trying their best to master their magic enough to do it, as well. Or, perhaps, once you get to 14th level, you accidentally concentrate a fire spell so much that it becomes lightning, surprising your character below board.

With the blessing of my DM, I've converted my monk into an elementalist after being rather disappointed with the Four Elements Tradition provided in the PHB. This class is everything I wanted my monk to be, and a little bit more!

The base class is strong and enjoyable in its own right, and feels relatively much like monk. The spells feel kind of like paladin: Strength in the form of Elemental Blasts, and a little utility on the side.

The archetypes really make the class shine. They add just enough flavour at the start, much more flavour in their spell selections, and then a huge amount of mechanical flavour and utility in the late game when you select a specialty.

I only have a few remarks specific to my character:

- The Warrior control style as it is currently written makes for a bit of a strange mental overhead. Before level 10, you just do two elemental strikes followed up by a weapon bonus attack, to maximise the chance you can pull off an Elemental Blast....See more

Hi, Carmen! I'm so glad you're enjoying the class!

Thank you so much for your feedback! We'll be doing a comprehensive review and update of all of our classes soon, so we greatly appreciate hearing from people with actual-play experience, and you make some great points about Healing that we'll be paying special attention to when we conduct this process with the Elementalist.

Hello again Ross, after the success of the Sculptor on the podcast, I decided to include all of your playable classes as options to my players. One of my players had their character arrested in our last game, and has no hope of release any time soon (the other players were the ones who assisted in the arrest).

As his new character, he has decided to play as a Dragonborn earth elementalist with the spirit bridge control style. Once again, I'll provide a comprehensive review once the player has a number of sessions under his belt, I'll provide insight from both DM and player perspective.

Thanks for the great character options!

I don’t understand why your elemental strikes deal bludgeoning damage it makes no sense why it doesn’t deal the damage type of your chosen prime element? Though I understand from a balance perspective it makes no sense from a in game perspective

This class is very heavily based on Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. In those shows, most of the unfocused elemental blasts the characters throw, including the fire blasts of firebenders, were entirely concussive, devoid of any sort of elemental effect. In the game world when playing an elementalist, this can be represented by chucking simple energy in the shape of your element without imbuing it with an real elemental energy.

It's listed in the 1st-level features of each of the Elemental Attunements, though it will be moved to a more obvious location in a future update we hope to release soon. Hope that helps!

I like how this class leans heavily into existing game mechanics to create the desired aesthetic rather than trying to invent a subsystem. That said, I have to go back and reread it because it seems like its default damage is really low.

The damage is intentionally low for the elemental strike at level 1 because, at that same level, the class gets access to a powerful defensive ability and to a cantrip that has multiple uses. It's also important to keep in mind that elemental strike' s range can keep you out of the frontline if necessary. It all leads to a high level of safety and utility at level 1 that necessitates shortbow/handaxe levels of damage. And our playtesters agreed, not minding the slightly lower damage in exchange for all the other benefits.

Additionally, starting at 2nd level, Fighting Style and Elemental Blast cause a pretty huge increase in the class's overall damage numbers and/or consistency, while also making them better in every aspect of the game with Spellcasting.

And then, their damage scaling into later levels is also quite potent. It all leads to their early level damage being low for the same reasons that bard deals so little damage at level 1: so much utility, safety, and later-level scaling...See more

By default I meant raw numbers over all. At a glance I was comparing it to the Monk which is dependent on multiple attacks but I see know this is intended to be a little more utility and bursty, but that burst potential is mitigated by the limit on number of attacks (which is a fine trade in exchange for the diverse spell selections).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
