Siege of Deepingdown

Zooryn stumbled along the pitch black passage.  Even with eyes so accustomed to the dark, he could barely discern anything through his good eye, his other having been swollen shut for some time.  He tripped over unseen terrain, barely able to right himself.  His stomach lurched, hunger pangs almost making him retch.  He was battered, starved, and oh so tired.  “Gods below, let me find them,” he muttered, thinking idly that his gods were unlikely to hear him, so far was he from his native lands.  He paused, bowing to catch his breath.  He could just stop, lie down for a moment, get some rest…  A flicker of something caused him to jerk his head upright.  Was it light?  Another trick of his overworked mind?  He waited, his eye straining to see something, anything.  Then he heard them.  They were definitely voices, quiet and indistinct, yes, but voices.  He couldn’t place direction or distance, the sounds echoing madly around him.  Was it Dwarvish?  He leaned his head around, ears frantically seeking patterns in the unknown speech.  He tried to move closer and fell.  This time, as ha tried to rise, he realized that he had no strength.  The unseen voices got louder, and with his last reserves of will, Zooryn croaked out the one word of Dwarvish he’d been taught before he had been sent.  “Help.”  Then the deeper blackness claimed him.

What language is the map writing written in?

It's written in dwarven. The maps were presented as they would appear in the journal of Brother Brannik Skarnhome, who as a cleric, chronicled their adventure, often sketching the areas they visit and creatures they encountered. At least that was my intention when I designed them. Each passage describes the area, and what they encountered there.

Can you link me to a site that translates the symbols? I'm interested to see what they say. Or do they not actually translate to anything?

They do translate. The artist has all the information and we will update the module to add in the requested information as soon as we have the translation put together.

Since you've requested it, I'm talking with the guys at Mage Tower about either adding the translations, or an actual guide to the language to the appendix, or as an update. Thanks!

We made a revision to the document. Feel free to download the "Rev_1" document and it will have the translations as well as the runic alphabet used. Hope this helps.

This looks interesting. Can you give a bit more of an overview of what this adventure is?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
