"It's fantastic! This adventure is clearly and concisely laid out to make running it on the fly a cinch."

"The adventure is really good. It's detailed and in the same manner open and flexible."

"They love it! We stopped with a cliffhanger as they saw the lighthouse and the big wave approaching..."

Rumors of a rampaging sea monster have ground shipping traffic to a halt in the harbor. The players discover that the Jade Lion has gone missing near Skyhorn Lighthouse and learn they must brave the open seas and cutthroat enemies in order to save the crew from a murky fate!

The Secrets of Skyhorn Lighthouse is an adventure for 5th-level characters. It takes about 5-7 hours to complete and includes:

  • Four new monsters: eelfolk, eelfolk hunter, eelfolk scourge, and eelfolk stormcaller.
  • Negotiations with pirates, underwater combat, and shark attacks!
  • A carefully crafted format to make running the adventure easy and customizable.
  • Combat cards for each monster, PC, and special treasure.
  • Digital maps for use with Virtual Table Tops.
  • A Fantasy Grounds conversion by Gwydion!

Are there printer Friendly version to your adventures? I'm really looking forward to this, but I'm not a digital type guy

Hi Michael! Good question. I just added a print-friendly version that takes out the background image and makes the adventure art greyscale. I left color in titles/words where I felt it contributed to readability! :) I hope that helps!

Hi Kelsey, I just ended up buying all of your low level content because of your prompt response. Would it be possible when moving forward to have all of it in printer friendly versions?

Love this format. Concisely presented but leaves enough room for a lot of impromptu characterizations.

Looking forward to running this adventure next week using some tabletop terrain I’ve been crafting. A question about the cave maps: are the white areas of the map around the cave and old tower meant to be solid stone?

Hi there! :) Yes, that’s correct — the white areas are all solid stone.

Honestly, one of the best one shots ever. I love how it's organized. My players LOVED this adventure. Everything from The Arcane Library is very high quality.

I've loved the Arcane Library stuff so far! I've ran modified versions of Temple of the Basilisk Cult and Crypts of Azarumme and they both went great! Got a weirdly specific question about this one though.

In the section "Under Siege", it says the players can climb in through a window which leads into a stairwell between areas 1 and 4, but the stairwell is in the middle of the building? How would a window connect to that? (My players often get fixated on exactly where their characters are, it's mostly my fault for springing too many traps on them!) Anyone got any ideas for this?
Customer avatar

CREATOR
Thanks so much, and totally valid question! I figured the windows were the long-type through the stone walls, similar to arrow slits, although wider. So they'd have a long passage into the central stairwell between floors and glass over the outside. I hope that makes some sense! I think it would also be absolutely fine to modify it so the windows are facing into some of the rooms. :)

Really love the look of this one-shot, gonna be running it for my birthday on Saturday! It's only my second time DMing, so I was wondering how you would handle the sailors in the Sea Monster Attacks (p7) encounter? Would any of them be participating in the fight? If so, would I group them similar to how I would enemies? Just don't want the encounter to get too tedious for my players.

Hi Michael! Happy early birthday!! :) That’s a great question about the crew. The ship is crewed light, so in my mind, the sailors would be very busy during the fight just trying to keep the ship from capsizing. Same is true for Sheila — she has to fight to steer as the elemental is crashing around battering the ship and crew. Although I’m sure they’d try to help in a very dire situation, such as if the players are getting totally overwhelmed. I hope that helps and that you have fun on Saturday!

Hi Kelsey, thanks for the response! It was an awesome time in the end. I did go with similar to your suggestion in the end: I set it up so that half of Sheila's crew had deserted due to being stuck in port for so long, so she was down to a skeleton crew that focused on keeping the ship going. Didn't quite get to finish the whole campaign, so having to work up more content for the second part, but it's a really great one and I'll definitely be recommending it to other DMs :)

Hi there! I don't have any pre-made characters for the adventure, but there are tons of great pre-made ones online for free at all character levels (some created by Wizards of the Coast, even). Those would be great resources if you need characters quickly! :)

Fantastic one-shot! Really well laid out, with tons of great information for this first time DM. I ran this for some experienced players and felt very comfortable the whole time. We ended up spinning a whole campaign out of it.

The balance seems right for 5 players. With 3 PCs and a cleric NPC, it was quite challenging (in a good way).

SPOILER ALERT

Hey Kelsey, great one-shot. I can see why it is one of the highest rated one-shots on this site. I've run this one shot two times now. The first time was great for learning where to cut corners to cut down on the overall timeframe and also taught me that I wanted some additional maps added.
For the first session, it lasted 5.5 hours with five level 5 characters, one of which was a barb who chased a cat the whole time before falling to his death from the lighthouse lol ... so really, it was four level 5 characters. And with that, they fought the pirates at the beginning, the elemental, the first group of eelfolk (second group was taken out. Felt excessive, especially for the time was already over two hours at this time), and then they went right instead of down in the cave so they avoided the ship and the sharks. The last fight was interesting because the wizard didn't know the range on fireball and almost TPK'd the party, all enemies, and all NPCs that were helping (Lucien and...See more

Haven't played this adventure yet but thought I should say that I ran both Temple of the Basilisk Cult and Crypts of Azarumme for my players and they really enjoyed them. They don't seem to be on DMs Guild. The presentation of the adventures is excellent and building on them to add extra details my group would like was very simple. Looking forward to running Skyhorn soon.

Hi Kelsey! I make paper minis on the side, I was wondering if you'd be opposed to me making minis for this campaign? I would offer them for free as the campaign is free as well. I had such a fun time running this as a pre-generated adventure and characters with my family over thanksgiving last year that I want the fun to continue.

Hi Forest G, If your still looking for an answer to this what you need to do is find the 'The Secrets of Skyhorn Lighthouse.mod' file and drop it into your FG mods folder making sure you have the correct ruleset implimented (alernatively you can load it from the load campaign option on start up of FG's), You will have to go and load in the content as you do with FG purchases.

If you have trouble finding you FG mods folder theres a small folder icon in the top right of the FG's launcher that will pop open the folder for you so you dont have to locate it yourself.

Additionally I had some issues as it kept trying to change the .mod into a .mpg for me (no idea why) so I had to actually change the file extension manually to get it to work this was probably some weird issue with my system more than a universal one but thought I'd include it incase similar happened.

Hope this helps.

As long as the file is named .mod, it does not matter that Windows thinks it is a music file (.mod was used ages ago for that). It will work fine in Fantasy Grounds.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
