"It's fantastic! This adventure is clearly and concisely laid out to make running it on the fly a cinch."

"The adventure is really good. It's detailed and in the same manner open and flexible."

"They love it! We stopped with a cliffhanger as they saw the lighthouse and the big wave approaching..."

Rumors of a rampaging sea monster have ground shipping traffic to a halt in the harbor. The players discover that the Jade Lion has gone missing near Skyhorn Lighthouse and learn they must brave the open seas and cutthroat enemies in order to save the crew from a murky fate!

The Secrets of Skyhorn Lighthouse is an adventure for 5th-level characters. It takes about 5-7 hours to complete and includes:

  • Four new monsters: eelfolk, eelfolk hunter, eelfolk scourge, and eelfolk stormcaller.
  • Negotiations with pirates, underwater combat, and shark attacks!
  • A carefully crafted format to make running the adventure easy and customizable.
  • Combat cards for each monster, PC, and special treasure.
  • Digital maps for use with Virtual Table Tops.
  • A Fantasy Grounds conversion by Gwydion!

I'm not much of an expert, as it turns out! There's a section on the FG wiki here that hopefully explains it: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Data_Files_Overview

I’m planning on running this for a party of 4 fourth level characters (cleric, barbarian, wizard & warlock/bard). Any recommendations where I should adjust monster count? Or should I add some kind of magic item to even the odds for the PC’s?

Hi Lisa! I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you, hopefully it's not too late. In general, the power difference between 4th and 5th level characters is pretty steep, so I'd cut back the monsters by a fair amount in most encounters. Keeping the water elemental should be okay, but I'd remove 2-3 eelfolk combatants from the large melees (you can always keep them in your back pocket to charge in if the fight is far too easy). I'd also consider making the sharks flee a bit sooner than written since they can be high damage output; perhaps they're easily spooked off by taking damage.

Let me know if I can help in any other way!

Thank you for your reply. We play tomorrow and I will use your suggestions.

I have another question. I’m having trouble imagining how the cave system looks in relationship to the buildings. For example area 6 is part of a cave, does that mean area 8 is also underground? I thought so until I read the description of the towers. Could you tell me what you had in mind here?

Thanks. I can’t wait to run this adventure. I gave my players homework to find a sea shanty and sing a verse or two. :)

Hi Lisa! Yes, all of the structures in areas 5-9 are underground. I imagined areas 8-9 as built inside the caves themselves, or else old sunken buildings that have fallen underground over millennia. The broken towers are remnants of buildings and are also underground.

I hope that helps! I love that your players are going to come prepared with some sea shanties! :D

I just ran this as a one-shot for my group! This was for 3 x Level 5 characters (Battlemaster Fighter, Devotion Paladin and Archfey Warlock). To make it work for them I made the following changes:

General:
- Changed antagonists to a mixed group of eelfolk and pirates, led by the Pirate Queen Isabella Yardley, whose goal was to pry out the bowl and take it for her fleet
- Added some friction between eelfolk and pirates for players to exploit if they wanted to (my water genasi warlock character spoke Aquan)

Sea Monster Attacks (p8)
- Added a ballista to the Annabelle Lee, which Sheila Coppertree fires after 3 rounds
- Removed beads of force, I worried these would be too swingy for a group of three

Under Siege (p9)
- Removed one regular eelfolk from the first group
- Dormitory contains 4 x Bandit (pirate) instead of eelfolk

Summoning Room (p14)
- Reduced to 2 x Eelfolk at front, 1 x Eelfolk hunter on tower
- Replaced...See more

These are some fantastic, well-balanced changes! I remember you mentioning this to me on Twitter if I'm not mistaken because I absolutely loved the concept of Pirate Queen Isabella Yardley. I also really like the flavor of the pirates having an uneasy alliance with the eelfolk, too. I'm so glad to hear it all made for a fantastic session!

And agreed about the need for print-friendly PDFs -- they're in the works for all my published adventures! :)

Is there any way I can download this as a pdf rather than a zip?
Customer avatar
Kelsey D August 17, 2018 10:09 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hey Josh! Sorry for the delay, the .pdf file of the adventure is separated out, and the rest of the content (map, combat cards, etc.) are rolled into a .zip file. Otherwise it would be a lot of .jpgs and other things floating around!

Hi Kelsey, I happen to stumble on your adventure while prepping for a session, and it seems to be the perfect fit for a project I wanted to work on.
I'm thinking about doing free Arabic translation for exceptional published content here in the DMG, and your adventure is one I would like to start with.
My goal is make D&D more accessible for people who speak Arabic but know very little English. Once done, I'll send you the translated work and you can add it along with the original and the FG version as you already do. I don't want anything in return, I just want more people to have less barriers to enter this hobby.
Let me know if you are interested in this. And feel free to contact me at ahmed@aljabry.com if you have any questions

Is there a printer friendly version without the page backgrounds & adornment on the right side, and with either the published date or version number in the page footers?
Customer avatar
Kelsey D June 20, 2018 5:53 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Jeandré! I don't actually have a printer-friendly version of this module out there, although that is excellent feedback for me to incorporate. I also put the version number in the file title, but not in the actual document itself. That came down to esthetic preference and the desire to keep readable page material at a minimum.

JUST WOW!, I used this as a one-off for a characters backstory, This was fun for me as a DM , and my adventurers had a real good time with this. Mrs. Kelsey I look forward to seeing more of your work. This was really fun, well laid out and to the point. Left me alot of room to improvise here and there. I have recommended this to a friend to use --and he should. Great time by all.

Hey Kelsey! Just wanted to say I just ran this and I really enjoyed your brief and to the point style. Too many DMs Guild modules are overly wordy, stifling the imaginations of DMs and impeding their flow. The almost 'cliff notes' writing style works perfectly for something that is designed to be just one or two sessions, allowing for a lot of freewheeling wackiness. Thanks!

Where can I download the player-friendly digital maps? This is my first time DM-ing and I'm just itching to set everything up in Roll20 :)

Hey Max! The player-friendly digital maps should be in a folder in the .zip download titled Player_Safe_Maps. The main cavern is split into two files so they clock in below the 5MB upload maximum for free accounts on Roll20. Let me know if you hit any problems getting them!

I really enjoyed running this. It was my second time ever as DM and did it with 2x lvl 7 players and they basically aced it with a bit of help with a couple of the NPCs helping out (Shelia, Lucien and Arryn).
Ended up having Arryn proposing to Sheila after the players found gold rings in the Wounded Lion...

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
