“The only thing more fragile than glass is a lover's heart.”

—A Vistani Proverb

Decades ago, the fair land of Avonleigh was guarded by an order of paladins known as the Circle. One stormy night, a wizard named Morgoroth came to seek refuge with them.

But, all was not as it seemed! Morogoroth was no mere wizard; he was a necromancer on the run from a knightly brotherhood that had vowed to see him destroyed! When fate revealed his past, he betrayed the Circle and fled.

Can your heroes complete the crusade that destroyed the Circle? Can they learn the secrets of Morgoroth's power before the necromancer destroys them? Accept the quest if you dare....

Product History

A Light in the Belfry (1995), by William W. Connors, is an Audio-CD adventure for Ravenloft. It was published in May 1995.

Origins (I): Continuing Ravenloft. A Light in the Belfry (1995) is one of numerous adventures produced for Ravenloft during the Revised era (1994-1996) of publication.

Origins (II): Another Audio CD. However, A Light in the Belfry is really more closely allied with the AD&D Mystaran releases (1994-1995). Starting with First Quest (1994), that line was heavily focused on introductory adventures, each of them packaged with an Audio CD that supplemented the adventure with various audio cues.

A Light in the Belfry is one of just two Audio-CD adventures produced for non-Mystaran lines, the other being A Player's Primer to the Outlands (1995), published a month earlier. However, the innovation was about to come to an end: in one more month, Mark of Amber (1995) would be the final Audio-CD release.

Adventure Tropes. A Light in the Belfry is a classic, locale-based adventure. Players explore manor grounds, then the manor itself. Each location is very carefully detailed for a beginning GM, including an audio track to play (from the 87-track Audio CD) and a list of responses to specific actions, such as casting specific spells or manipulating objects in the room. As a locale-based horror adventure, this harkens back to I6: "Ravenloft" (1983), but with such specific lists of actions and responses, it could just as easily have been a choose-your-own-adventure book.

The heart of the adventure is eventually revealed to be a shattered MacGuffin: players must piece back together a mirror to escape.

Mapping Tropes. The boxed set includes a beautiful, full-color isometric map of Tergeron Manor. This once more is reminescent of "Ravenloft", which introduced maps of this type. It's not as carefully interconnected as Ravenloft's magnificent map, but the color is a very nice addition.

Exploring Ravenloft. A Light in the Belfry introduces a totally new Ravenloft domain, Avonleigh, which is said to be "one of many islands of terror that appear from time to time in the Mists of the Demiplane of Dread". The adventure contains precise details on the heart of the domain, Tegeron Manor. Though new, Avonleigh would appear from time to time in later supplements.

Avonleigh is said to be "drawn from a distant world whose folks were not unlike those of prime-material fantasy worlds like the Forgotten Realms or Mystara campaign settings." As Ravenloft was often used to cross-over to other campaign worlds, it's rather surprising that TSR didn't make a more explicit connection to one of these worlds.

NPCs of Note. Morgoroth, the dark lord of Avonleigh, is introduced here.

About the Creators. Connors was one of the major authors for Ravenloft by the mid '90s, having previously co-authored Forbidden Lore (1992) and the revised Ravenloft Campaign Setting (1994).

I almost posted the whole audio CD script but thought better of it. Ultimately, the product belongs to Wizards and posting their content, on the very site they are selling it on seems wrong, even if its not included in the product. If a moderator says its okay, I would happily post it.

Is this usable without the audio files? Like, is all the relevant information to actually play the adventure in the PDF?

Buying this without the audio files is POINTLESS. This was by far the best of the audio adventures. Offering it for sale without the best part of the content is just a way to give older players the finger, but hey those of us older people are used to age discrimination from Hasbro.

I feel bad if I download this then pirate the audio zip. Why not just add the zip files for the adventure like you guys did with dungeons dragons first quest game

Okay. Who thought it was a good idea to offer this adventure WITHOUT the audio tracks? The module is quite unplayable without room descriptions or the bits of history the party is supposed to learn each time they find a mirror fragments.

I guess we buy the pdf book from drivethru and then do a google search and download the audio zip files from the cd but then one runs into the pirating issue... when we would happily pay and buy the audio zip if they offered it with the pdf.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
