Forgotten Realms: Guide To Faerun

preview-image.jpg

A great reference for both players and DMs!

This guide provides a concise overview of some of the most well-known locations on the continent of Faerun, home to the Sword Coast.  The primary setting for the majority of Wizards of the Coast's 5th edition campaign publications, the Forgotten Realms is the most popular and developed campaign setting in the history of D&D.

Organized by geographical region, it includes over one hundred succint descriptions of some of the major kingdoms, cities, and legendary locations across the continent of Faerun. It is not intended to be a campaign sourcebook, but a useful companion for DMs who would like to have a quick and concise overview of the lands of Faerun at their fingertips, to help them get a grasp on the bigger picture and bring their campaign world to life, and give them information they can present to their players about the world at large.

It can also be "found" by players, to help them with their travel and adventuring decisions.  By placing it in a library, a bookstore, a mage's workshop, the hands of a dead traveller, or anywhere nosy adventurers go poking around, characters can learn more about their world, and consider far-off lands they might like to journey to and explore.

There are minimal references to specific people and organizations.  It is primarily a geographic reference, mentioning only different cultural norms, common industries, and the like. This makes it as compatible as possible with campaigns set in any period of the Forgotten Realms.

Perfect!! Just the kind of guide for my players and I! A brief overview of places, as not to overwhelm anyone. I have books on my gamming shelf to do that if we really need more in dept information. I can dive into those if the players decide to go to that location.. Lol

Thank you for this quick and dirty guide for me and my players!

As far as I know, print-on-demand is only available by invitation from the staff of DM's Guild.

However, I'm sure they take suggestions/requests from their customers, if you'd like to contact them.

Thanks for your interest!

PREFIX: This is not an all encompassing guide to Faerun. It is a handout (as stated by the author) to give you broad strokes as to some major locations.

Perfect for what I was after. I've got a whole bookshelf full of things on the realms.... that my players are never even going to read the back covers of let alone the contents. Instead of asking them to read something like the SCAG or Grand History of the Realms (both fantastic) this succinctly, and stylishly gets across the basics of all of Faerun in an easy handout. It's 14 pages of actual content isn't super dence, which I like, and is laid out quite nicely. Couple this with "The Council of Waterdeep" for info on the factions, and you have a GREAT primer for players who, although may be somewhat familiar with the realms, might need a quick refresher on Faerun.

I'm glad you found it useful!

The reasons you've given are exactly the reasons I created it for my players in the first place. Thanks for the review!

Not worth it. A brief description of locations barely a paragraph about each place no population sizes what the place trades full of typos very dissapointing.

I'm sorry it wasn't what you were looking for. But I think the preview makes it clear what you should have expected from the location descriptions.

You are correct that exact population numbers, except in a few cases, are not specified -- I used terms like metropolis, city, town, small village, etc., to indicate sizes. I think it would be very strange that a traveler who had written about the places he visited, would have access to census data.

Similarly, although detailed commerce data is missing, many entries DO discuss the major trade goods and services for which different places are well known.

As I stated in the description, this is an item that is intended as a simple overview of the major features of Faerun. While it certainly can be used as a helpful quick reference for DMs, it was created to be used by players as an in-character item. So it presents only the type of information that might be easily acquired or commonly known by it's more well-educated and well-traveled...See more

Bought this as I wanted something I could give to my players who know very little about Faerun. Nice quick overview but I have found lots of typos which has made me stop reading to type this lol..
That ive found so far.

In the description of Suzail it has "Coymyr" and a sentence that goes "often considered the one of the strongest" should that say "considered one" and the descriptions of the dales for Shadowdale its spelt Shaowdale. I read no further got put of from the mistakes. So there could be more. Maybe proof read your work a few times specially when your charging for it.

I just had two more sets of eyes go over it, and cleaned up a few remaining typos. I also fixed a few missing bookmarks in the PDF!

The latest update has been posted for downloading. Thanks again for the feedback!

For something that proclaims itself a Guide to Faerûn, I would expect more references to people, political organizations, and historical events, rather than minimal amounts. I recognize that you want to make things customizable for homebrew campaigns, but Faerûn is the largest and most popular of all the settings and I feel as though you sold the document short by not delving into what makes Faerûn what it is.

For example, if I'm running something like Rise of Tiamat and my players decide that they want to really look around Elturel or Baldur's Gate while enjoying their head start on the Cult of the Dragon, or they wish to make a detour to Silverymoon after heading north so that the bard can follow up on the bardic college that exists there in hopes of advancing their character's backstory, or they have business around Waterdeep and there's more information I need as the DM to make the city organic, I would find this less than adequate. I would expect a guide to Faerûn would tell me who the important...See more

Thanks for the feedback! As you mentioned, the main purpose of this guide is simply to help players and GMs get their bearings, so they can have a better grasp on the geography of the world. When I made this for my players, one of my concerns was overwhelming them with TOO MUCH information. I decided that if they showed interest in exploring one of the areas mentioned, then it would be time for me to get down to business and do more research and planning! However, I didn't want to provide that level of detail in a single book to my players, for a few reasons: first, it would tie my hands as a GM, and not allow me to develop and change the world organically when needed. Secondly, I didn't think it would be realistic from an in-character point of view, for them to possess such a complete guide to the world. Something like that would be extremely valuable and rare.

To include the level of detail you describe for every entry, such as local businesses, temples, major people and organizations, would...See more

Perhaps I should change the blurb on the cover to "A geographical description..." ?

The fullsize preview does not seem to work. Would love to read about one of those locations before purchasing.

I've noticed I also have a lot of trouble viewing previews on DMG for most titles. Chrome doesn't work, Firefox doesn't work, but oddly enough, MS Internet Explorer sometimes works... I've added a link in the description to an externally hosted preview. Hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
