"5 Stars. Holy crap what a cool idea to add some new flavor to your game! These talents are nicely balanced and give variety to any character. If you're a DM, this would be the perfect way to surprise your players by allowing them to unlock abilities they had no idea existed!" - Garin J.

"5 Stars. Exactly what I was looking for! Gives my players that extra flavor and utility while maintaining game balance. So many cool talents in here, I can't wait for the second book!" - Joshua C.

"4 stars. I want my players to be epic. I want them to be larger than life heroes. Adding talents give them another simple mechanic to give a bit more depth to the characters. All in all I really like this idea of lesser powered talents that can provide additional dimension to characters and I'm looking forward the the second one coming out." - Steve C.

Character Options: Talents offers variant rules for your 5th edition gaming. It does not change any of the existing rules. Instead, it provides you with additional options for character customization and development. It offers over 230 talents that you can choose from, enabling you to bring flavor, diversity, and much needed punch to your characters!

Take a look at the preview to get a good idea of what you can have!

I noticed that both Barbarian and Monk have the same talent: Improved Unarmored Defense. Was that intentional?

I noticed the prerequisite for Two-Weapon Rend is Two-Weapon Fighting. Since any character with two weapons has the potential to fight with two weapons, should that prerequisite be Dual Wielder?

dunno if you got this figured out by now. but Two-Weapon Fighting is just the fighting style version of Dual Wielding

Sorry for the confusion. It should be the fighting style 'Two-Weapon Fighting' that fighters and rangers can acquire. I will update the book to make this specific.

This looks extremely interesting as my players feel like they don't have much agency over character customization. Before I took the full leap, how would this interact with feats themselves? Would you replace the entire feat system with this or in addition?

Hi John. It's going to be an addition.

I love this stuff, it really helps make characters feel mechanically unique. One area kinda lacking in 5e. Great work! I'm looking forward to purchasing Talents 2 and Monster Talents!

Idk if you're planning on updating the document at all still, but fyi, on page 17, Orcish Brute Ancestry & Orcish Brute Rush have the same description which i don't think was intended. The benefits are different, it's just the description. Also, on page 20, the Infernal Wrath ability is really confusing. I think it's the grammar, different tenses being used or something, it just took a while to understand what you were getting at.

Is Greater Cleave supposed to work with Paladin Smite? Because it that case it seems rather strong?
Customer avatar
Dragonix M February 09, 2020 4:24 pm UTC

Hi Casper. I haven't updated the current version yet but what we do in our games (from my own notes) is that we only include weapon damage from cleave. A paladin's divine smite deals radiant damage so it should not be counted in any of the cleave talents.

Hi, a question: "Extra Fighting Style" Fighter and Paladin Talent: can you take it more than once, each time selecting a new fighting style? Many thanks!
Talents are a gorgeous add-on to D&D 5ed. and are now a regular part of all my campaigns: great work!

Thanks, Valerio! As for the extra fighting style, if the talent can be taken more than once, it will say so. Unfortunately, it doesn't say so here. However, there is no harm if you wish to change the ruling here in your campaign. In fact, you should do it. I don't see anything game-breaking from it.

On page 36, the talent "Hamstring" states that it slows a target. However, there is no such status condition in 5e and the talent doesn't specify what "slowed" means. Would you mind clarifying this talent, please?

Quick reply and quick update, thanks!

Only a minor thing I've caught since then - "Blessing of SIlvanus" in the factions talents - the I is capitalized by mistake. Though that's a pretty low priority compared to mechanical issues.

The way Improved Flexible Casting reads, because it only affects Creating Spell Slots, could a sorcerer simply not create (for example) a 3rd level spell slot for 4 Sorcery Points, then next turn Convert a Spell Slot of 3rd level to Sorcery Points for a return of 5? This effectively nets them unlimited sorcery points and subsequently infinite spell slots.

Improved Flexible Casting
You have mastered the art of Flexible Casting.
Prerequisite: Sorcerer level 12.
Benefit: The cost of creating spell slots as shown in the Creating Spell Slots table (PHB p.101) will cost you 1 sorcery point less than normal. Additionally, you can create spell slots of up to 6th level. It will cost 7 sorcery points to convert a 6th level spell slot.

Won't you only get 3 back when you convert the 3rd level spell?

Yes, you heal an additional 1d10 + fighter's level. So yeah, that's a total of 2d10 + 2x fighter's level.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
