Out of the Abyss - DM Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Elven Tower presents a compilation document of all the content for DMs running Out of the Abyss module.

Compatible with D&D Beyond Maps!

This guide has been very well received by the DMs community. I have gotten great response during the creation of this content.

The guide is over 60 pages long and contains hoards of information, guides, suggestions, and general information for DMs running this module.

It now has clickable table of contents and bookmarks for all the different chapters for easy navigation.

There are maps for Gauntlgrym, Sorcere Tower, Vizeran's Tower, Karazikar's Maw as well as some very needed flowcharts and infographics to better understand the adventure.

The guide also features some maps drawn by me (Elven Tower) to supplement the missing illustrations for important locations.

I've also included a print friendly version with no background.

Thank you for your support.

In the doc it mentions a separate article where you stat out Yeenoghu's cursed flail. I'm not seeing that anywhere and I'm considering taking my group down this path. Do you have a link to that writeup?

Hi Jeremy, I never actually made stats those weapons in any part of my guide. It’s something that slipped my mind and never happened, but this is what I did when I ran the campaign. I never gave stats for the Glaive since my characters didn’t ever use it. But they used the flail, and this is what I did. It was a Nine-lives Stealer weapon with a +3 magical bonus. Damage was 3d10 + the PC modifiers. After each battle using it you had to roll a charisma or wisdom save, don’t remember exactly or become chaotic evil permanently. This deterred my players from using the weapon too often since the price was to high for them. The difficulty was 13.

Thanks Derek. I very much appreciate this guide. I've used it to enhance the second half of OoA considerably and my players are really enjoying it.

I have a love hate relationship with most of the adventure modules from WOTC. Grand ideas, great NPCs but the flow of the books can be super messy. But when the world sends ya lemons, make lemonade and that is EXACTLY what independent content creators like Elven Tower has done. These guides to run adventures like OOTA are very helpful. This one has 60 pages worth - just the one idea around an expanded story for one of the NPCs (Prince Derendil) I think makes this worth the price of admission.

Hi Barry, I've updated the files to see if that fixes it. Let me know if you still have issues?

I actually used this from the web site but as I got so much out of it, I thought it was only fair to purchase it too!

Is the Spell attack modifier and Spell save DC on the pudding King stat block correct? I’m comparing it to the official stats and they are almost the same but the pudding king in this guide has much higher charisma.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
