Any suggestions, from experience or playtesting, coming from the DM point of view on how to communicate to the players that they are not getting railroaded into the adventure by the geas spell? I can see my players saying, "Well why not get the City Watch/Guard or the Lord's Alliance to take care of it since we are in Neverwinter?" I want to run the adventure but I can also see my players being put off by how they are forced into it or they will ask for a ton of money since they were the 'chosen party'

I'm a pretty new DM who is planning on running this for my group as a one shot, just out of curiosity are there any spells etc that one might consider banning for this particular adventure to prevent players from cheesing through? I'm all for creative solutions, just thought I'd ask as I'm not totally knowledgeable about every spell, ability, etc.

Hi love the adventurer! I'm adding a IRL ticking clock to keep more players moving (the ultimate procrastinators :)

Not sure if there was an answer to this in the adventure (forgive me if there was) but what is keeping the upper levels from falling? Is it Tobi? The rift? If either of these, when they are "disabled" will that cause the upper levels of the tower to collapse?

Thanks for the kind comments, Chris! I never really defined what was keeping the upper portion of the tower attached to the lower portion. If pressed, I'd say the original construction was magically reinforced which helps the tower maintain it's integrity, despite the damage.

Can you please provide me with the tower maps without the grid lines? The grid lines are making it just impossible to import it into R20. Thanks!!

You can get it at these links:

Thanks a bunch!

As a side note, would you like the grid-less colorized versions of the tower and maps I made? You are welcome to include them in the files pack or ignore them, as you like.

My group is about halfway through the tower (great module, thank you!) and I am pretty sure they will take Frander's portrait with them (they have cut the canvas from the frame, and sewn in onto the rogue's cloak like a back patch, lol).

Any advice on how to handle what happens when they leave with it?

I would keep him around as a curmudgeonly NPC who occasionally has a useful insight to share.

For the extended Arcana skill check to close the rift at the end of the adventure, should the Arcana check made each round use up a player's action if they're the one's doing it?

These all sound so amazing. I use a lot of one shot modules when I do my homebrew campaigns to ease my burden of making everything. I wish some of these were on VT. Most of my friends and I live around the country so we get together via Fantasy Grounds weekly to play. I would love to see these hit the digital sales!!!!

Hi Kelsei, thanks for the feedback! A few of my earlier adventures are on Fantasy Grounds. Check out Temple of the Nightbringers, Terror at Triboar and Shadows on the Long Road

Just ran through this adventure last night and had a blast so thank you for writing this! There were a few parts where we got a little stuck on it, so thought I'd offer feedback.

- No scale on the maps, whoops! I drew them up as 5' sq but quickly realised that was a bit cramped for 2 water weirds in a room, we had to play rather fluid with the positioning of characters to get around this.
- Level 3 was hard for me to work out where the pipes were and the control mechanisms. You mention areas 3B and C in the text, but this doesn't appear on the image as a guide.
- Level 8 was difficult to work out due to having the two towers. I didn't realise it was primarily a stairwell with a secret hatch and that the outer tower was inaccessible on this level. My fault for not reading it thoroughly beforehand, but on the fly i think the map could be a little clearer perhaps.
- When Tobi died, it didn't specify how long he should stay down, I ended up leaving him as energy while they figured out...See more

Thanks Daniel - what great feedback!

Yes, scale of 10' makes more sense. And I don't think Tobi is a shapeshifter - he is a weird elemental hybrid.

I'm so glad you had fun!

I'm currently running this with a party of 5 and have a few questions.<br>
1. Why are there charred salamanders in Experiment room 1? As in what does this have to do with the plot? It seems so random. Why was Frander burning salamanders? <br>
2. If Tobi can't leave his room, how did he kill the Githyanki pirates? I know he can go up to the rift chamber but don't we fibd the githyanki corpses pretty far away from Tobi?<br>
3. Should the painting of Frander know anything about what happened and if not, what is its purpose?<br>
4. What is the point of the xorn and jinni story? <br>
5. Why would Frander just sacrifice himself to Tobi if he was unwilling to test the elemental procedure on himself? <br>
Not trying to criticize your work but my party is really picking this apart (they're only at experiment room 1) and I want answers to the inevitable questions they will ask. Thanks!

Good questions, and I will answer them as best I can.

1. Frander was opening portals to the elemental planes in his laboratory, and was experimenting on various elemental creatures. The salamanders were (presumably) burnt to a crisp when the explosion happened

2. The bones of the githyanki are in the rift chamber - these are the ones Tobi drained. The githyanki corpse in the landscape chamber was presumably killed by something else - possibly the wandering earth elemental

3. Primarily comic relief! But the DM can also use him to give the players hints if they get stuck

4. It basically explains why Frander's treasury is empty. It's also a cool little puzzle for the players to figure out.

5. The experiment was Frander's life work - he was obsessed with seeing it through to completion. He probably thought he could transfer some stabilising life force over to Tobi without it killing him. Clearly he miscalculated.

I'm running this for my group this week, and I have a couple questions about running Tobi.

"If Tobi is reduced to 0 hit points he does not die. Instead he is reduced to a form of pure energy that is completely invulnerable, reforming his body in an unoccupied space within 10' of the elemental rift."

1. How long does it take Tobi to do this?
2. When he reforms, is he immediately back up to full health?

I really like this adventure; I've had a great time making battle maps and tailoring it to my party!

M.T. B May 16, 2017 10:05 am UTC
Hmmm... good questions and an oversight on my part. He reforms with full hit points, but I would make it take a few rounds, perhaps 5. And people should see the distintegrated remains turn into a liquidy elemental goo that heads back toward the rift. That way the players will twig as to what is going on.

Thanks for the reply, good to know!

I do have one more clarifying question: when Tobi switches between elemental forms, are all his abilities in your stat block for Tobi, or do you envision these elemental forms also having the abilities from the elementals on DMG p.124-125?

Only what is in the stat block in the adventure

I'm looking forward to running this. What is the scale of the grid on the maps? 5 ft per square?
Customer avatar
M.T. B April 10, 2017 11:25 pm UTC
doh - how did I forget to put a scale on? I was thinking it would be 10' - some of the rooms will be a little cramped at 5'

Thanks. Also are there any NPC stats for Gimble Clickcrank?
Customer avatar
M.T. B June 15, 2017 3:39 am UTC
No - as per the intro he has the statistics of a commoner, alongside his artificery skills (which only come into play in the last chapter). He is intended as a non-combatant

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
