A Chance Encounter

Suggested Price $0.00

A Chance Encounter is a classic, low level adventure designed for a group of 3 to 4 1st level players. It should take about 2 to 3 hours to play through. This is the first adventure in a miniseries with the next adventure in the miniseries being The Mystic Circle.

In addition to the adventure, there are a couple of maps of the adventure area as separate jpeg files. There is also a printerfriendly version of the adventure.

Was looking for a fun easy adventure to play with my nephews with out prepping one of my own. They are both 4th level and I had to do a bit of scaling but nothing major since it is just the two of them. I did tweak the caster's spell list, changing out Charm Person and Expeditious Retreat for Mage Armor and Shield. I noticed a couple of inconsistencies. First, the sorcerer cast Magic Missile when the players enter his area; but it isn't one of his prepped spells. So, I changed that to a Chromatic Orb. Second, I noticed that the Inn was called The Wolfhead Inn in the dialog box, but on the map it is labeled as The Bullfrog Inn. Over all I was happy with the adventure and look forward to running the series.

This entire series is very easy to play and a lot of fun. My son and I just finished "A Chance Encounter" and can't wait to play the remaining titles. Appreciate the work, Kristjan!

I ran this for my first ever session but got a bit stumped when giving a reason why the letters were hidden. I am just interested in what others did for this so I can explain more to my players if needed. Thank you.

Can this be easily incorporated with the Mud Creek series?

I ran this as a one-shot for my daughter and we both enjoyed it. Easy to follow as a DM and with some memorable NPCs. Thanks!

Hello, I'm a new DM and I used this mission as an "audition" for DMing a D&D campaign. It was an awesome mission, thank you for posting it. Breaking the mission down into parts with subtitles made it very easy to read and follow. The pictures were a nice touch. I enjoyed being able to give the players a visual of an important character. I wanted to tell you 3 things I noticed during our play through:

- With the choices my 3 players made and typical party and out of character banter, the entire mission took 8 hours to complete. (And I loved every minute of it.)
- As soon as my players found the letters, they went to open them right away. If you're going back and adding more info to the document, some brief information about the contents of the letters would be awesome.
- During the encounter with the Kobold Scale Sorcerer, the document says the sorcerer will cast a magic missile spell at the players as soon as it sees them. However, looking over the list of "prepared...See more

I have a question. I am new to DnD and I want to use this for me and my friends first adventure. Is it possible to adjust some things so the campaign can work with a group of 5-6 players?

Hi Markeith C.

Sorry for the late reply.

The easiest way to modify the adventure is to change the encounters. On page 82 in the Dungeon Masters Guide, there are guidelines on how to create a suitable encounter depending on the party size and level. So what I would do is to either increase the number of monsters in an encounter, or change a monster out for a slightly higher CR one, using the rules on page 82.

Regards, Kristjan.

Its a minor thing, but the various skill checks in this module and your others should be "DC" not "CR".

Thanks for mentioning that. Need to edit it soon.

Town name is misspelled in the second paragraph "The village of Myrefall is a small 60-man village located a short distance inside the Wolfpine forest." Should read "The village of Myrehall is a small 60-man village located a short distance inside the Wolfpine forest."

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
