Classic Modules Today: I7 Baltron's Beacon (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In 1985, TSR published the module named “Baltron's Beacon” with the module code “I7”. It was written by Phillip Meyers, and illustrated by Larry Elmore and James Roslof.  It consisted of one 32 page booklet and a tri-fold cover with dungeon maps.

This conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules and provides a reference sheet for encounters.

To use this conversion guide you will need a copy of "I7 Baltron's Beacon", originally available in hard-copy and now for sale in Digital format at DMsGuild.com.

"Classic Modules Today: B4 The Lost City" contains the OpenOffice/LibreOffice source files used to create this PDF. Visit Classicmodulestoday.com for instructions on creating your own classic module conversions and selling them on the DMs Guild.

Classic Modules Today are a series of products that convert early edition Dungeons & Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules to the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rule set. They fully adhere to the rules set forth in the Community Content Agreement of the DMsGuild. The CCA states that adventure conversions must be:

"A streamlined, bare-bones conversion guide for someone who already owns the classic adventure — i.e., encounter-by-encounter conversion notes with any 5E stats needed, leaving out all other content."

For more information, download the free guide "Using Classic Modules Today Conversions".

Am I missing stats for Cyrus, Tyrus et al? I couldn't seem to find them.

The monster list has them referred to standard NPC stat blocks in the Monster Manual and Volo's Guide to Monsters. They're in location G6 in the Gatehouse under Planned Encounters.

Cyrus and Tyrus are thugs, Boris is an illusionist, Borg is a spy, and Rothgar is a priest. Their equipment can be swapped out a bit, but the base stat blocks work.

If you wanted the group to be more powerful, Cyrus and Tyrus could be veterans, Borg could be an assassin, and Boris could be a mage.

I find this series very helpful and worth the money. However, they have one major flaw: in several of these, certain monsters featured in the classic module is missing from these conversion products. In this one, so far I've noticed three monsters/creatures missing: a Demon, a Guardian Daemon and a Son of Kyuss.

Thanks for the heads-up Patrick. I don't revisit these conversions as often as I should, so I'm glad you took the time to provide feedback so I can address the issues. If you've found others in my conversions, please let me know and I'll work on them as time permits.
The Son of Kyuss and Guardian Daemon have been given custom stat blocks and inserted in the correct places per the original module. I had replaced the GD with a slaad because the CR fit at the time, but it deserves its own stats.
The "Type 1 demon" referenced in the module was renamed in later editions to Vrock. The vrock is in the 5e Monster Manual, so it has only a page reference instead of reprinting the stat block. Some folks may not know about the name change, so I inserted a brief note in the conversion stating that.

Thanks! And I often recommend your products...a big help and time saver for those of us playing 5E and looking to play the classic AD&D modules. The content in this series is well organized and easy reference.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
