Draconomicon: Dragonbound

Watermarked PDF

Protect the world or begin a reign of terror with your dragon companion at your side!

“Up above the clouds, a high elf in thick layers and protective eyewear rides a silver dragon, a message cylinder that will affect the history of nations clipped securely to her belt.

A brass dragon and her human companion plod across the scorched sands of the desert in the direction of an ancient ruin that legend says contains enough treasures to satisfy even their combined avarice.

A red dragon descends from the night sky, carrying a dragonborn of the very same hue. The dragon spits flame, igniting the fabric tents below, as both dragon and rider relish the screams of fear and pain from their enemies.

Dragonbound are humanoids who, by tradition or chance, find their fates intrinsically intertwined with the destiny of a dragon. The two become partners, bound to a closeness exceeding even that of family by links of ritual and magic.”

This is the full version of the Dragonbound class, and contains the following:

  • The full 20-level Dragonbound class progression.
  • No less than 5 archetypes—the Greedbound, Horizonbound, Lorebound, Saddlebound, and Warbound (descriptions below).
  • 34 Breath Abilities
  • 31 Bond Boons
  • Guidance for using new and converted dragons from Spilled Ale Studios' Draconomicon as dragon companions!

The Greedbound

When a dragonbond is formed with either or both of its participants being motivated even in part by greed, sometimes the magic of that bonding becomes perverted into something else. These dragonbound pairs possess a unique magic that is vampiric in nature, able to absorb the souls of their deceased foes and increase their own power.

Most commonly Greedbound are evil aligned anyway, and such pairs embrace their twisted power. Good aligned greedbound often spend their their contracted period in penance for their moment of sun, seeking out powerful evil entities to defeat and absorbing their souls to diminish the evils in the world.

The Horizonbound

For your dragon and yourself, life is all about the journey. You take every opportunity to wander and to explore, and, as soon as your dragon is able to carry you, to fly.

      The Lorebound

Your dragon and yourself are interested in scientific discovery or ancient secrets. You venture far and wide in your quest for knowledge, knowing that the two of you have both the power and the intellect to bring about great change in the world. Whether that change is ultimately for good or evil, only the two of you can say.

      The Saddlebound

For you even more than other dragonbound, the combination is greater than the whole. Your dragon companion and yourself train every day to make sure you are always in sync, and you wait eagerly for the day your companion is large enough to ride. When that day comes, you will truly fly and fight as one!

      The Warbound

Your dragon and yourself live for battle, or perhaps through necessity you battle to live. Maybe you fight because the two of you have the power to do good in the world and save others. Maybe you just want to watch the world burn.

I think a couple changes are necessary for clarity:

      a) When increasing hit dice, do you mean to recalculate from 0 as if a new NPC [in other words: a creature with 4d8+4 has 22 HP] or to add HP by either rolling/taking the average as a player class does [in other words: a d8 can either be rolled, or take 5]? Similarly, I think the addition of 1 per level at each age category [levels 9 and 18] is confusing if you mean the former - you would already do that as part of its recalculation!

      b) The breath ability attack modifier probably isn't meant to be 8+prof+cha.

      c) The warlock equivalent to Breath-Enhanced Blows, Lifedrinker, is a 12th level prerequisite - and being able to double dip Charisma as a damage stat is one of the worst things about Hexblade warlocks. My suggestion? If nothing else, add the prerequisite, or this is just a MUCH better version of a bladelock invocation. I would also change the wording to allow any melee attack made using Strength or Dexterity to add...See more

As another note, the level 9 feature definitely shouldn't use a new hit point pool - the amount of hit points should just be a constant between the two forms, like with metallic dragon Change Shape, where their hit points don't change (IE, damage to one form carries over to the other at 1:1, being reduced to 0 HP and remaining humanoid is possible - only on death does it revert.)

I lost a comment I was working on. Short version: damage immunity from warbound potentially is both too strong and too early (monks get poison immunity when Heroes’ Feast becomes available, forge cleric gets fire immunity at 17, no other damage immune classes, plus the other features are strong enough on their own), and breath’s resilience is used twice as a feature name. Claw back from death is too good when compared to Death Ward and/or half-orc relentless endurance, if it was 1/long rest or used both your reactions I think it’d be okay. All classes have 4 subclass feature levels, I’d either migrate the level 1 features to level 3, or move weakened versions of the level 3 features to level 1 and have them upgrade at level 6. Explorer is used in the multiclass section. Paragon is still used in places where Destiny should be used.

When you have time, can you please add a section about the requirements and benefits of multiclassing into this Dragonbound class, as there is no such section in the file.

Another question I just noticed, is that it says only The bonus *damage* dealt by your breathboon fang is based on your Charisma bonus instead of your Strength or Dexterity. So does this mean the to-hit modifier still uses your Strength or Dexterity? If so, what's the point of having that line? Because that line seems redundant when you're going to have to make your Strength or Dexterity scores be quite high to get any sort of decent hit chance.

      Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
      Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
