The Haunt

Unlock the secrets and drive back the evil from Montarthas Manor

A one shot, 6-8 hour Horror themed adventure, designed for characters of 4th or 5th level.

In ages past, an ancient town was lost and destroyed to a seige of orcs. Only one building survived and to this day, the manor is the only still standing building to be seen for miles around. Some say it is haunted, a few whisper of great treasures within, whilst others whisper that it is the manor itself that lives!

No one knows for sure, only that a great evil haunts its halls.

Do you dare enter Montarthas Manor?!

DISCLAIMER! This will be a challenging adventure for 4th level player groups of 3 to 5 players with some deadly encounters. However, ideally The Haunt is tailored as a medium difficulty adventure with plenty of excitement, horror, suspense and danger for a 5th level party of 4 to 5 players.

What would be the best way to beef up the Night Hag fight for 5 level 7s?

Heya Adam,

Give her the coven abilities (turns her into a CR7) but simply just don't add the other 2 hags... that along with the ghouls this should challenge them.

I am looking to run a 3 hour one shot on Halloween at my school for 6 or so junior high (13+14 y.o.) students. Is it broken into segments that could be played in that time frame?

Heya Robert,

Absolutely, it is haunted mansion. It has three levels (basement, ground floor, and top floor). for a 3 hour session I would suggest to just omit the basement, and if you feel that time is still running short, leave out the ghast/ghoul room on the top floor. It is quite easy to simply lock out some rooms on the top floor to reduce running time if needed. But then again, some groups fly through this.

Cheers

Just got this and am going to run it as a one shot on Sunday. Looks fantastically spooky. I have a few questions though.
What should I do if someone tries destroying the doll when seeing it in room 3?
What happens with the flesh golem after it opens the door?
I have a possible party of 7, will it still be difficult with them at 4th level or should I have them create 3rd level characters?

Hey there Christopher,

1. Destroying the doll early: she comes back with no explanation because "supernatural"... the unexplained is a very useful tool in setting the horror vibes, use it tp your advantage as a DM ;) - remember all those times in classic horror movies when the big bad has been defeated, only to rise again, or return with no explanation in the sequel?

2. Fleshy: a lot of people end up allowing him as an NPC to join the party. Some have him fall to bits just beyond the exit door from the basement/on stairwell. Get creative with it, I would love to hear what your party does with it :)

3. Party of 7: Yeah I would make them level 3. But just beware the night hag and her ghouls... maybe limit the ghouls to 2 per casting.

Cheers

I just ran this adventure last night with 4 5th level characters. One was turned to dust by that thing in the pool, so the end fight was nearly a TPK.

Question 1: Could you add the handout as a separate image like you did with the maps?
Question 2: Do they really only have 2 rounds before the big very bad thing happens? (being vague to avoid spoilers) 120ft/15ft = 8 saves

Heya Brad,

1. Absolutely, I'll upload it today.
2. Yep that's right... if you think this is too hefty (the advebture is meant to be challenging by it's nature) then consider lowering the DC (your discretion).

Btw, section 20 (page 10) references 5a and 5b, which are not marked on the map.

Running this for a group of 5 players, level 5. A rogue, a druid, a warlock, a bard, and something else (presumably beefy). Do you recommend characters starting out with 1 uncommon magic item (the "high magic setting" for starting equipment for levels 5-10), or no magic item? The players have varying levels of experience. Excited to run this in a couple weeks!

Honestly, I probably wouldn't... the more you strip away from them (or not give them to start with), the more the horror themes creep in, imho.

Thanks and I look forward to your group's story:)

My players want to run a scary halloween one shot as evil characters. Would that affect how they interact with the story? Im afraid of them not caring too much about the doll and other key aspects since they plan to all be evil alignments.
Customer avatar
Phil B October 16, 2019 4:48 am UTC

I don't think it would effect it much at all... Evil characters can have players that get spooked just as easily as players with good aligned characters ;)

Heya Rayce,

6 players should still be fine I think. There are some really hard encounters in there for the intended 4th level APL... but there are also some easier ones too... maybe just make the night hag at the end actually a coven of night hags to balance the final fight.

Hey, I just purchased this and have been looking through it to run next Saturday.

On page 7, it says if they fail to get out of the basement in 20 minutes, they fall unconscious and wake up in level 2 area 8 and mentions it as the Generals Broken Heart, except that room is listed as 24. Am I missing something? Also, if it does send them right into that room, doesnt that skip the doll and all the other level 2 encounters almost entirely?

CREATOR
Hi Skyler,

Yes, that is a typo I am afraid. I will be releasing an update soon to fix the legacy room number.

That is correct with the missing the doll and other upper level encounters, however when the party attempt their escape at the end, why not throw a shadow hidden doll at them? or have a final confrontation around the wreckage of the manor. Or simply, like I usually do especially when pressed for time, omit the basement all together.

Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

Tldr: Phenomenal mini module and with the advice of the candle, dim lights, and music, the atmosphere was... anxiety inducing enough to make him fall into his character. The best thing for a DM in my opinion. The writing was fantastic for descriptions, save for one of them which I feel gave a tad too much away to the player.

Just ran this only a few hours ago. For story reasons (character development) I used this is a solo session. As I write this it's turning into me giving a full recap of his actions for better or worse. Just know we loved it.
(Hopefully I'll have avoided any spoilers incase a player is reading)

This session was one of his favorites. I had him with three NPC's, one of which being Fala Lefaliir from Dragon Heist. He's a level 4 Barbarian and and the NPC's used were CR 2 (Fala the druid, gave Fala Cure Wounds so could be adjusted), 3 (Swashbuckler), and lastly 3 (Knight).

With this party he was given charge and decided most things with little help....See more

Can someone let me know what level they'd recommend for a group of three players?

And: How accurate is the time frame of 6 - 8 hours? I've seen some people say they ran it over 4 hours. What's everyone's experience like there?

Level 6 would work well :)

I ran it last night and if you remove the basement it will be around 5 hours, depending on your group and if they split the party on the griffon statue or not.

How would you scale this for an 8th level party?
Customer avatar
Phil B October 31, 2018 2:35 am UTC
CREATOR
Hi Albert, You might be better using The Haunt 2 (made for 6th level characters) instead for a higher level party. It will be easier to scale up, and TBH it is a pretty difficult adventure to begin with. I would suggest making good use of the Bleeder Nurses in the Haunt 2 should you go that way.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
