The Haunt

Unlock the secrets and drive back the evil from Montarthas Manor

A one shot, 6-8 hour Horror themed adventure, designed for characters of 4th or 5th level.

In ages past, an ancient town was lost and destroyed to a seige of orcs. Only one building survived and to this day, the manor is the only still standing building to be seen for miles around. Some say it is haunted, a few whisper of great treasures within, whilst others whisper that it is the manor itself that lives!

No one knows for sure, only that a great evil haunts its halls.

Do you dare enter Montarthas Manor?!

DISCLAIMER! This will be a challenging adventure for 4th level player groups of 3 to 5 players with some deadly encounters. However, ideally The Haunt is tailored as a medium difficulty adventure with plenty of excitement, horror, suspense and danger for a 5th level party of 4 to 5 players.

Over the last couple years, I have been on a one-shot kick and my group is loving it. The last year has been largely horror-themed. This adventure is one that has caused my players to get other groups together to play through this because they loved it so much. I've run this adventure 5 times now, and it is just the pinnacle of what a one-shot can be. Well-written and thought out, Montarthas Manor is a place of pure horror and immersion.

The prep for this is very easy, from a story and background perspective. It can be inserted into existing campaigns. I recommend building a soundboard for this adventure using something like tabletop audio.com's SoundPad. Their House on the Hill soundboard is nearly perfect for this. Well done! 5+/5 stars!

I just bought your adventure The Haunt from DM's Guild and I was wondering if you have a copy of the map with no grid? I plan on importing it into Fantasy Grounds and it's usually easier when there is no grid.
I know that you have a version already formatted for Fantasy Grounds, but I usually take pre-made adventures and add stuff to them so they are tailored to my players and I find that easier to do when doing the work myself in bringing over the adventure to FG. Thanks!

Hello PB, Loved the first book. I will definitely get the other two. Are you going to have those also softcovers as well? Would be really cool to have them all in one hardcover. I'd love to have a physical copy of the three.

I ran this module as a one-off session/side quest while my players were galivanting around Phandalin. They LOVED it. I'm definitely going to consider this publisher/author my #1 go to for modules in the future.

On page 9 under the Evil Doll heading it says 'roll a d%, there is a 40% chance that the evil doll makes an appearance.'

I'm not sure what roll a d% means? If anyone can clear this up I'd appreciate it!

Heya Ira,

Firstly, thanks for the purchase!

By d% we mean a d100. (2x d10s). If the roll is 40 or under, the doll makes an appearance.

You can always adjust this number or get rid of it completely if you want less randomness for her appearances.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Can anyone who has run this let me know if the players are meant to take one/multiple long rests or is it meant to be played with no long rests?

Having just played it as two level-7 characters, we just left the mansion after a while and camped on the grounds overnight. You could play it without a long rest if you had four players. There's nothing keeping you from doing so.

This is just a suggestion, but aligning the image borders with the grid would make life a lot easier for those of us using VTTs like Roll20. ie. your map dimensions are 2550 x 3300 but your grid size is 72x72, meaning your maps have grid dimensions of 35.41666 x 45.8333. Roll20 at least likes snapping things to its internal grid, so aligning the maps right now is doable but a bit fussy

I think just bump up the monsters stats or include some traps or additional monsters. I’m going to run it for the first time as a first time DM
Customer avatar
Michael G November 01, 2020 4:00 pm UTC
Two level-sevens destroyed it handily, so I'd say this is going to be hard to balance around a group or five anythings beyond level three much less five level-sixes. Maybe doubling every monster quantity and having all optional encounters becoming mandatory would help, but I still don't think it would be a very challenging module.

Is there intentionally no map for the basement?
Customer avatar
Phil B September 09, 2020 12:06 am UTC
CREATOR
Hi Tom,

That is correct, as the encounter is not a combat encounter, but really just a puzzle in essence, there was no need for a map of the basement. Is this something that people would like? I could probably pull something together if there is enough demand for it.

Cheers

Yes i would like to see the basic map. Also, how to get all of them in there together? What if only one character goes in by himself first?

Also no door leading out to pool area on map?

Also how to scale for 7 - 3rd level characters?

Does anyone have suggestions for scaling this for 4 level 12 players?
Customer avatar
Michael G November 01, 2020 3:56 pm UTC
There's no way this would work for a group of four 12th-level characters. My son and I just played it with two 7th-level characters, a monk and a wizard, and even with my wife increasing the HP of everything by 30-50% and including extra encounters for fun, there was no tension until the final encounter. That encounter, by the way, would not be much of an issue for a group of four level-four or five characters, as the action economy would be much more balanced.

I don't want to crap on the creator or anything, but the story is not very engaging. It's a dungeon crawl without many tie-ins to the actual characters mentioned, and the enemies you fight in no way reflect the characters or history suggested by the threadbare story. There are several monsters and set-pieces that could easily be made to reflect parts of the story or characters, but they don't. There are other issues, but I don't want to spoil anything. Overall, it's a super basic concept driven by the stat block of the main monster and lacking...See more

Heya Vladimyr,

You are probably going to want level 12 for it to be a medium difficulty.

Level 10/11 for a hard difficulty

Level 9 and below for deadly.

Hope this helps, and looking forward to hearing how it plays out :)

Cheers

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
