DDAL05-18 The Mysterious Isle (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Baron Rajiram’s forces have secured the Nelanther Isles and have scoured the Sword Coast for treasures.

Now they have begun to explore a mysterious island that recently just popped into existence nearby. SEER seems to believe that an aboleth artifact is their goal. It is up to the adventurers, in competition with the baron, as well as aboleths, the Kraken Society, and the mysterious caretaker of the island, to locate the Eye of Xxiphu and avert catastrophic disaster.

This module is labeled in some parts as a tier 3 and tier 4 module. I can't imagine it being overly challenging as written at this point as a T4 module but would be more appropriate of a challenge as a Tier 3. I'm asking the author what tier the module was written for and can/should be run at. Thanks! 8-)

It is a two part adventure across DDAL05-18 and DDAL05-19. While best to run both parts together, if you only have time to run one I'd recommend DDAL05-19.

For a Tier 4 mod, this was not all that great. I understand that writing for characters at this level is much harder then writing for characters at Tier 2 or even Tier 3 since you are dealing with 9th level spells like Wish which makes things very easy. But the things that we are fighting at this level are much to easy. As written this is a nasty mod is you are running it for only three people since things can and are nasty, but when you have a full table, no. It should be something that is very powerful like a Death Knight or having the Warlords as basic troops and not having what was used in this anywhere near this adventure. It should be non stop epic level monsters. I do believe in making things tough but fair. If my character dies in a epic way at this tier I am ok with it VS something like "Oh, you are in a mile wide Dead Magic zone, you are all fucked." That is not an epic way to die, that is just a poor choice on the writers end.

Adding my review here because I was gifted the module to run at a convention.

Overall review: 3/5 stars.

1) Plot. The plot is fairly simple and easy to understand. The mission becomes clear very quickly to the party members.

2) Combat. The CR of the monsters in this module is bit below Tier 4. There is a reason for that that I will not discuss here for spoiler purposes. I ran this adventure for a party of four players. The combat was fairly unchallenging for them, regardless of the environmental effects of this module.

3) Traps/puzzles. There were only a couple of traps/puzzles for the players to work through. They were not a major aspect of this module.

4) Roleplay. There were a handful of decent opportunities for RP in this adventure, mainly with NPCs. My players did capture an enemy which made for a bit of information gathering.

All in all this was a decent Tier 4 adventure. It wasn't my favorite to run, by any means,...See more

Just read through this for prep next week. As usual there are the numerous AL typos. For example, page 6 says "Robe of the Pact Keeper"....it is actually "Rod of the Pact Keeper".

I am really confused by the elemental portals in the sahuagin attack section. It reads like you are walking up a tunnel and all of a sudden you see a round room....but the map provided has no way to physically make that happen. Is the idea that you are walking along the hallway on the left and if you look at A, B, or C you see the circular room? That was really confusing.

Page 9 and page 13 refer to Player Handouts 2 and 3 when it is actually Handouts 1 and 2.

On page 13...the paragraphs above and below the Purple Crystal call out are almost identical.

The tables on page 9 and 10....what do you mean by one band, two band, three band, four band. The body text doesn't say anything about it. Are you recommending that the mobs be broken out into groups?

Also...just noticed that on page 9 (Surface Encounters) says "....a mage and either veterans"...and that is it...is that supposed to be 8 veterans or is there supposed to be another option?

Also, the possible treasure at the beginning mentions an Horn of Valhalla (Iron) while the Permanent Item section mentions it being bronze. I'd assume bronze since all other items in the list are very rare.

Strike that - it's the right preview, there's just a typo in the document - the introduction says "Welcome to Eye of Xxiphu", but it's actually "The Mysterious Isle".

The title of the overall 2-part adventure is "The Eye of Xxiphu"; it was decided to give them different names late in production, so "The Mysterious Isle" became the name of the first part. So, the introduction is both right and wrong! ;)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
