Strange Tidings: 20,000+ Rumours

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Strange Tidings has now been updated to include a one page city adventure based on an idea generated with the tables in the main product!

One of the best ways to create a world that feels like it's alive and real is to sow it with stories and rumours of strange places and mysterious goings-on. Every town the players visit brings them new tales of weird and wonderful things; every city has its urban legends, its wandering ghosts that a friend-of-a-friend saw once upon a time, its crocodiles in the sewers.

Strange Tidings allows you to generate over 20,000 rumours that your players might overhear on their travels. Each has the potential to lead to adventure, danger, and riches beyond sight; similarly, they might be nothing but stories, with only the slightest nugget of truth to them. However you choose to utilise them, filling your world with rumours and stories will make your games come to life, and make your world start to feel like a living, breathing thing.

I also run a D&D resources website called Loot The Room, where I publish free content 3 times a week. Find out more at loottheroom.uk.

A fair number of the combinations are nonsensical, but even then there are at the very least several hundred potential great ideas here. I'd love to see a sequel.

Personal favorites include "An adventurer's ghost is searching for an ancient amulet deep in the catacombs" and "Blood mages are offering a reward for something of great power in an ancient sunken city", both of which were generated by the dice gods and edited solely for grammar. I know where my next couple of adventure hooks are coming from.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
