Artificers: Gunsmith, Revised

Crafting and invention should define the artificer class, and each gunsmith’s Thunder Cannon should be a unique creation.  The Gunsmith, Revised realizes that philosophy.  Inside, you will find options to customize your Thunder Cannon as a pistol, rifle, or shotgun.  You will also find many powerful modifications to perform on the Thunder Cannon as you advance in artificer class levels.  I included any rules from the original Unearthed Arcana article that survived my playtesting so that, much like the revised ranger, the revised gunsmith fully replaces the original gunsmith specialty.

Question, when making the copy of the Thunder Cannon should it be possible to also make the Copy into the Pistol, Rifle, or Shotgun varients?

Hey, great revision but might I make a couple suggestions?

You removed the extra attack and elemental ammo, but some parts of the guide still reference it. (Such as below gun modifications).

I'd also like to suggest that some gun mods should have a level requirement for balance. Taking explosive round at 9 is significantly stronger than at 17 (the wotc level you normally get it).

Thanks for making this! Going to be trying it out in my friend's campaign since the wotc one seems very flat.

Exposive Rounds at 7th, or even 9th, level shouldn't be a real issue. Any class that can cast Fireball as a 3rd level spell at its weakest form can still out damage the Exposlive rounds at Max damage. Artificer can just do it more often. Also, if AoE spells/effects of that large an area are being used that often, or as long more than a couple rounds, you should probably have your engagement be closer up.

Solid stuff! If you want to make this look more professional, might I suggest http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/ It's what I use for producing all of my homebrew content, and it's fantastic.

I will add a review as soon as the website allows me to

Yep! It's a great site!

My only main critique regarding this revision is that having archetype features as 5th and 6th level feels overpowered. The class already has a significant amount of power behind it, adding extra attack is very likely to make it overpowered. Besides, the Rapid Fire customization already amounts to essentially having extra attack.

And as for Improved Arcane magazine, giving the gunsmith access to what is, in essence, three different cantrips is significantly unbalanced. I would suggest that being able to empower one's Thunder Cannon shots with special elemental damage be a modification available through the 9th level feature.

Additionally, I would say keep the damage type of the bullets non-magical but add an option to Gunsmith Modifications that allows them to overcome non-magic resistance against specific types of monsters such as undead, fiends, aberrations, etc. That would serve to strengthen your revision's emphasis on customization and...See more

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback! I have now added a second PDF to the download that omits Extra Attack and that makes the elemental damage available only as a modification.

I kept the counts-as-magical feature of Improved Arcane Magazine, because my playtesting found that at 5th level and above, when most other characters begin to have access to +1 weapons and/or spells that deal magical damage, the original gunsmith's lack of magical damage on Thunder Cannon attacks becomes a significant limitation.

That makes sense. If I may, though, I would still like to suggest a modification that grants a particular advantage against a specific enemy type, similar to a Ranger's Favored Enemy. It would in essence allow people to create demon hunters or vampire slayers as gunslingers, which I could guarantee would be a hit!

Either way, I can guarantee you that this revision will be finding its way into my current campaign. One of my players likes to build characters, so I let him play a couple characters at a time, and he has been craving to play a gunslinger character, and your revision of the gunsmith archetype is going to give him EXACTLY the level of customization that he has been craving!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
