In Volo's Wake (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The town of Phandalin, nestled in the foothills to the east of the Sword Mountains, continues to grow since being rebuilt after the devastation wrought by rampaging orc hordes. It recently survived violent gang activity, drow machinations, and even the attention of a green dragon.

But can it withstand a new threat, bizarre but no less perilous: the fame brought by a visit from none other than loremaster Volothamp Geddarm?

Six 1-Hour Mini-Adventures for 1st-4th Level Characters.

Also included in the purchase of this adventure is a version specially converted for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The converted adventure features all the text and maps from the original adventure along with cross-linking of monsters, spells, magic items, equipment, and story elements, plus the powerful rules automation for which Fantasy Grounds is known.

This is one of the adventure campaigns I might have available for mini one shots, but does anyone know if the .mod file has anything that can't be seen/used in the dmg? I don't really want to struggle with fantasy grounds, roll20 just seems easier to me

The location of Halway doesn't make sense to me. It said to be south of Sword Mountains (page 7), so on the other side of mountains from Phandalin. On the second adventure children are said to go swimming on the lake next to Halway (page 15), this would indicate that the Lake is quite close by which doesn't match up with it being on the other side of the mountains.

I'm curious - adventure 3 says the players can sell the dreamstones at town, but gives them no incentive to do that or even think of it. I'm sure at some point someone's going to cast an identify spell on one - How has everyone else navigated this? Did you make them into homebrew items? Or just shiny rocks that were magicked by the hag? They did explicitly give advantage on certain rolls, but other than that, we're kept in the dark about their powers. I'm leaning towards wanting to make them do SOMETHING, but don't have a ton of time to try to homebrew/balance something on my own.

We made the dream stone and the nightmare stone magical foci (or focuses or focusses). We allowed them to be used by any magic user that could use a focus. We gave the Dream stone a +1 to spell DC, and the nightmare stone a +1 to Spell Attacks. Since Hags love the rule of three, the existence of the Day dream stone is out there which would grant a +1 to magical spell damage. When/if any two stones are brought together, they may be combined to form the Reverie Stone with the combined power of both. If the third stone is added to the first they may be combined to form the fantasy Stone with the combined power all three. All of the stones grant advantage to prevent disease, because hags like to be ugly and pestilent, this would be why the hags shied away from the stones. The Fantasy stone grants advantage to arcana checks.

On page 19, in the flesh gnawer statistics, it says "Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft.
or range 20/60 feet, one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing
damage." when it should say "Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft.
, one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing
damage."

Is there a Roll20 version of this?

Why did someone replace "adventurer" with "character" in this entire thing? It makes some of the sentences make no sense! The very first encounter has the PCs interacting with a self-style "hobby-character"? Come on guys! (I know that this is free right now, but it still should meet some basic standards!)

Even better, from page 6: "Sildar [Hallwinter] is a former character..." Is he really? If this was a text document and not a .pdf, I would just fix it myself.

I actually enjoyed these mini adventures a lot, but they are really tough for brand new, 1st level adventurers because the experience does not tier correctly. For example, the gnoll adventure is meant to be taken on by 2nd level adventurers, but the first module only gives them 100 XP, not enough to get them to 2nd level. Some small adjustments will have to be made by the DM to make this a truly great campaign.

When my players were tasked to look for Alana Hallwinter, they asked "what does she look like?" Does anyone have an answer? I don't even know what race she is--sometimes she's lumped in with the dwarf friends and I infer she's also a dwarf, other times she's separated from her dwarf friends suggesting she's other than a dwarf.

It would be nice if there was something like this: "Like many other teenagers in Phandalin, Alana Hallwinter (female NG dwarf commoner) enjoys socializing, nice clothes, walks through the woods, and adventures with her friends. She's known to often weave colorful ribbons in her hair."

It certainly should give such information. She would most likely be human, or at least half. Sildar Hallwinter is a LG Human Fighter that appears in Lost Mines of Phandelver, which takes place in the same area.

Honestly, I don't know who I'd be without these adventures. They were a great intro for my D&D/podcast group to get to know our characters and ourselves. It's got a bit of cheek that's fun, plus a great balance of the D&D pillars that can let the DM know more about what the players are good at (versus what they want to do). Thank you!

Please fix the typos. The repeated use of "characters" grates on me more every time I see it.

Fun little adventures that have otherwise been stained by poor writing and no effort made to fix said poor writing.

This was a nice collection of adventures. Pretty well spelled out. I used it as my first attempt and DMing and it went fairly smoothly. A nice mix of combat and non combat actions can be taken. I found the difficulty of the encounters to be a bit lacking but if i was to run it again i would just add a couple more monsters. This adventure does a nice job at taking a low tier party and letting them go up against some different enemies than would normally be faced by a lvl 1 party.

The mission hooks were a little stale basically amounting to someone went missing go find them 4 times in a row but it was overall pretty fun.

A very nice little collection of adventures. Great for new players and older ones alike, and good for experimenting with different DM styles for new DMs. Each adventure has a slightly different 'feel' to it - for example the first mini-adventure can be pretty hilarious, while the second can be frankly horrifying and the third is incredibly surreal (with a hint of humour). Hack and slash vs roleplaying vs puzzles. The adventures show off each of the pillars in an interesting way, and while it's not all the same quality throughout, it's got enough good stuff to make it worth the purchase. This is now going to be my go-to for adventures with new players, as it's lightweight and varied, and not a huge amount of effort or boredom to re-play.

My only criticism (which may be due to my inexperience as an AL DM) is that completing these mini adventures will blitz your players through the levels like there's no tomorrow. This is fine if you just want to chill in Phandalin, but there's a lot of other exciting...See more

This is a good set of intro mods. I would recommend playing them all together if possible!

A nice balance to roleplay and dungeon crawl if you play all of them. If you only play a couple or just one you may end up with an entire role play or all dungeon crawl session

Pretty good premises and concepts, but the Mind Flayer and Yuan-Ti stories have some holes in the description. Flayer Map also shows rooms and stairs left unexplained. Had to Deus Ex Machina a couple of times to get the flow going again. Could use more work on character motivations. My players wondered why they had to sneak around levers if the mind flayer could do it herself without detection.

Variable quality, as with the other introductory mini-adventures. We loved fighting in the trees in "The Mottled Fur of Rage." Other than that, the encounters are fine if not especially memorable.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
