The town of Phandalin, nestled in the foothills to the east of the Sword Mountains, continues to grow since being rebuilt after the devastation wrought by rampaging orc hordes. It recently survived violent gang activity, drow machinations, and even the attention of a green dragon.

But can it withstand a new threat, bizarre but no less perilous: the fame brought by a visit from none other than loremaster Volothamp Geddarm?

Six 1-Hour Mini-Adventures for 1st-4th Level Characters.

Also included in the purchase of this adventure is a version specially converted for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The converted adventure features all the text and maps from the original adventure along with cross-linking of monsters, spells, magic items, equipment, and story elements, plus the powerful rules automation for which Fantasy Grounds is known.

This is a good set of intro mods. I would recommend playing them all together if possible!

A nice balance to roleplay and dungeon crawl if you play all of them. If you only play a couple or just one you may end up with an entire role play or all dungeon crawl session

Pretty good premises and concepts, but the Mind Flayer and Yuan-Ti stories have some holes in the description. Flayer Map also shows rooms and stairs left unexplained. Had to Deus Ex Machina a couple of times to get the flow going again. Could use more work on character motivations. My players wondered why they had to sneak around levers if the mind flayer could do it herself without detection.

Variable quality, as with the other introductory mini-adventures. We loved fighting in the trees in "The Mottled Fur of Rage." Other than that, the encounters are fine if not especially memorable.

Can these mini adventures lead into Storm King's Thunder?

I DM at a Local Gaming Store and received this for free. The balance of difficulty seems to be right and there is definitely some space for roleplaying the characters in Phandalin. If you have Lost Mines of Phandelver (from Starter Set), this can provide extra side material with the same characters.

For this module specifically, the editing is pretty bad. Somebody did a mass find/replace of "Sildar" and replaced it with "Silas", but only for some pages. They also did some weird find/replace on "Adventurer" vs. "Character", so you end up with someone being described as a "hobby character".

The combat text bleeds into the descriptive text and the normal bold-faced call outs are not present. So it's not immediately obvious what's involved unless you re-read the entire paragraph. Plus the descriptive text for an encounter will list things in the encounter that will then be changed by the difficulty adjustment two columns over. It's all kind...See more

Does this come with the maps? Or do you have to purchase those separately?

I DMed this as part of its early release through WPN stores, so I can't review it because I haven't purchased it through this site. I would like to say that this is a very fun collection of adventures. They work very well as side-treks along with Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is set in the same location.

---Spoilers Below---

Some of the scenarios are really fun - a battle against gnolls in the treetops, a fight against a kobold summoning hag in a magic house with teleporting doors, a low-level adventure featuring Mind Flayers and a Nautaloid ship! My only complaint is that the character's motivation for working with the Mind Flayers in the 5th mini-adventure were a bit lacking - my party was constantly looking for ways to kill or sabotage the Mind Flayers that they are supposed to be cooperating with (and they are not murderhobos, they are just good-aligned adventurers who are not all that sold on saving a Mind Flayer colony in distress). Overall, though, this is one of the best Adventure...See more

I am also currently running this with my players, and I've overall enjoyed the experience. I wasn't a huge fan of some of the mechanics as presented during "The Mottled Fur of Rage" encounter. If/when I run it again, I will have the gnolls be much more aggressive. I REALLY liked the yakety sax vibe of "The Filthy Claws of Sin", and actually awarded inspiration to the player who queued up the Benny Hill theme on their phone while they popped around the house trying to catch that hag.

The first mini-adventure, "The Green Skin of Treachery" is easily the most boring of the bunch, but it's not bad either, merely the plain launch pad for the rest of the adventure.

We have yet to play through the last two mini-modules, but I'm looking forward to it.

Final recommendation to DMs running In Volo's Wake for the first time - definitely dig through Volo's Guide to Monsters and tie in the lore that that book gives you. I made really good use of the gnoll...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
