Fey Creatures: Nymphs, Pixies, and the Jabberwocky

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Even with the release of Volo's Guide to Monsters the amount and variety of fey is still somewhat lacking in 5e, particularly in aquatic environments and the underdark (which, let's face it, have always been pretty lacking in fey to begin with). The books are also quite lacking on fey with a high challenge rating. I've decided to remedy this.

A stat block for the Jabberwocky as an epic level foe.

  • Jabberwocky (CR 23): an epic level titan of primeval dreamstuff

You'll find a variety of nymphs, a category of fey bound to specific locations in the wild, which are based on the dryad, along with unique variants for each nymph

  • Naiad: nymphs bound to freshwater sources such as rivers, springs, and waterfalls

    • Glaistig: an adaption of a 3.5 monster, a vampiric fey taken from Scottish mythos

    • Muse: defenders of the arts and patrons of bards

  • Nereid: nymphs bound to oceanic locales, such as specific currents, bays, and tide pools

    • Daughters of Umberlee: servants of the bitch queen who can change into dolphins

    • Sirine: gregarious sirens adapted from 3.5

  • Oread: nymphs bound to a specific mountain who delight in hunting

    • Wahine 'ai honua: a volcanic variant of the oread inspired by Polynesian mythos

  • Lampad: nymphs bound to a particular cavern, often found in the Underdark

  • Vestal: nurturing spirits bound to hearths

  • Boreal: A nymph of ice and snow, ideal for a winter fey

    • Yuki-onna: A winter spirit of Japanese mythos adapted from 3.5

As well as a few variations on the dryad itself

  • Bisan: A dryad inspired by Malaysian mythology bound to spice bearing trees

  • Redwood Dryad: A giant variation on the dryad bound to particularly huge trees

  • Gulthias Dryad: A bloodthirsty dryad bound to a blight spawning gulthias tree

  • Mycodryad: An Underdark equivalent of a dryad bound to zurkhwood fungus

The nymphs come with an optional feature that represents the madness that a nymph descends into when the natural body to which it is bound is destroyed or corrupted.

The nymphs also come with a Wyrd Template. Based on the elemental weirds of 3.5, these beings are oracles of specific domains of insight. To create a wyrd, one simply applies the Wyrd Template to an appropriate nymph.

  • Air: Oracles of travel and revelation.

  • Earth: Oracles of earthly ventures and doom

  • Fire: Oracles of passion, hope, and destruction

  • Water: Oracles of life, death, and the spirit

I've also prepared a handful of pixie variants, classified as faerys:

  • Frost: Friendly winter fey

  • Glouras: Underdark fey with strange whims

  • Nixie: An aquatic, water loving variety of pixie

  • Sylph: Fey spirits of the air that delight in travel

The faerys also come with an option for swarms of fairies, known as faeryblooms. Adapted from the Petals detailed in 3.5, faeryblooms combine their magic to grant themselves more powerful spellcasting, resulting in higher DC's.

  • Faerybloom Bouquet (CR 3):

  • Faerybloom Garden (CR 5):

Shaedling: What drow are to elves is what the web weaving shaedlings are to pixies

And variations on the sprite

  • Atomie: Dashing fey champions capable of shrinking their foes adapted from AD&D

  • Bramble: Wicked sprites of the Unseelie Court, adapted from AD&D

  • Grig: A more funloving variety of the sprite with the body and musical fondness of a cricket, adapted from 3.5

  • Koropokkuru: Cold climate sprites with a fondness for mortals based off of Ainu mythology

Since the faerys get a swarm variant, I figure that sprites should get one, too.

  • Regiment of Sprites (CR 5): Sprites will regiment in order to defend their homes or their fey lords.

I also included the following fungal Underdark variants of plant creatures.

  • Mycotreant: A variation on the treant based on the zurkhwood mushroom

  • Shambling mold: a fungal variation on the shambling mound with three sub-varieties based on the three varieties of mold detailed in the *Dungeon Master's Guide* and *Volo's Guide to Monsters*

My only criticism would be to include a table of contents and/or an index. Awesome work!

I'm already planning several new additions to this work. Looking to adapt some more pixies and sprites from 2e, as well as provide more fey options for the Winter Court, since right now those options amount to the bheur hag and not much else.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
