DDAL05-13 Jarl Rising (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The frost giants of the Ice Mountains have long held to the belief that a great Jarl will one day step forward to unite the families as Konung (king).

With the Ordning shattered, Jarl Ryndolg believes that if he can locate Hartkiller’s Horn, a legendary artifact among giant-kind, he could be the one. He may very well have found what he is looking for. A great clarion call has echoed across the Hartvale for two days, and the giants are all marching north. SEER calls upon adventurers to confirm rumors that Ryndolg may have done just that.

A Four-Hour Adventure for 5th - 10th Level Characters

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Purchased by my FLGS for AL play. Players had a really good time playing this one, especially the encounter with the three hill giants, led to lots of great Roleplaying and character development!

Repeating a question that was made earlier but does not seem to have been answered.

"Shroud of the Mourning Warrior: This item can be found in the Dungeon Master's Guide."
No it can't. Is there more to it than just being a +1 scale mail?

Bleak Plains or Black Plains. Adventure contains both variant. Which is right?

As many have commented, the adventure premise is incredibly weak. What I did instead was use Scövja Thurfurst from DDAL05-05 "A Dish Best served Cold" as a recurring character. After the group helps to rescue her son, she settles in to Hartsvale with her son as an unofficial emissary between the giants and the small folk. When Ryndolg blows Hartkiller's horn, she wanders off into the wilderness in a daze, unable to resist the call of the artifact. The mission then becomes to rescue her before their friend inadvertently joins the army of Ryndolg. The ogres at the end then are bandits who are using the dazed state of the incoming giants to rob opponents who would otherwise be far too great for them.

I liked this adventure. I like it when I get options to lego-assemble the adventure as I see fit. I think the encounters themselves were a bit on the weak side. Although, that might be an indictment of the whole APL system as my band of 7 APL 6 (rated weak, opted for average) blasted through all the encounters except the last one, which I played a little assholish. And they ended up with below half of the minimum XP.

7 APL 6 should be rated as average as you're above the expected party size, but below the expected party level.

The hook for this module isn't bad and it ties well with the season's overall story. This was great to run as well as play. 4/5

Soooo...question. The point of this adventure is to find out whether Jarl Ryndolg has Hartkiller's Horn and whether the giants of the Ice Spires are amassing under his banner. Why exactly are we making a long, perilous trek into the mountains to get to an abandoned lookout point instead of just casting Divination and asking "Does Jarl Ryndolg has Hartkiller's Horn?" and "Are the giants of the Ice Spires amassing under Jarl Ryndolg's banner?" It would take less than 30 seconds and the adventure would be over.

According to the official lore, the people of Hartsvale don't take kindly to wizards so they wouldn't bother asking a diviner.

You literally get the quest from SEER, who is a wizard and, indeed, a diviner. Even if that weren't the case, there is a temple of Chauntea right there in town that provides divinations as spellcasting services.

Looks really good... but the "Adjusting this encounter" for a "Weak Party" on Page 11 seems WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off base.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
