Classic Modules Today: I3-5 Desert of Desolation (5e)


In 1987, TSR published the supermodule named “Desert of Desolation” with the module code “I3-5”. It was a compilation and expansion of the original three modules; Pharaoh, Oasis of the White Palm, and Lost Tomb of Martek. The original material was written by Tracy Hickman, Laura Hickman, and Philip Meyers, and expanded by Peter Rice and William John Wheeler. It was illustrated by Jim Holloway, Keith Parkinson, and Harry Quinn.  It consisted of a 128 page book, poster size wilderness map, and small map booklet.

In 2004, for the 30th anniversary of the Dungeons & Dragons game, Dungeon magazine ranked this module the 6th greatest adventure of all time.

This conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules and provides a reference sheet for encounters.

Classic Modules Today are a series of products that convert early edition Dungeons & Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules to the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rule set. They fully adhere to the rules set forth in the Community Content Agreement of the DMsGuild. The CCA states that adventure conversions must be:

"A streamlined, bare-bones conversion guide for someone who already owns the classic adventure — i.e., encounter-by-encounter conversion notes with any 5E stats needed, leaving out all other content."

Is this a raw stats conversion or does it adjust encounter difficulties to 5e assumptions?

DoD is a fairly sandboxy game, and it should not be expected that it will run like "2 encounters, short rest, 2 encounters, short rest, etc".

There is a decent amount of work that needs to be done in general to run the adventure coherently, but it is an awesome adventure overall.

Hey, the Special Creatures section is referenced many times but is completely missing from the download.

I may be wrong, but it seems as though some traps haven't been converted to 5e? Like crushing walls and falling block?

Having purchased this, I have to admit, I'm a bit confused by the layout. Planned Encounters per chapter make sense, they are the direct conversion from the module. But almost every chapter has a listing of "Monsters" and I have no idea what this is meant to be? Sometimes it matches the room descriptions, other times it doesn't. What is this?

Hi Jason. The "Monsters" listing is simply a concise list of the monsters potentially encountered in that chapter, and is put there to help the you run the chapter by letting you know which monster stat blocks to have handy during play. You could go through the random and planned encounters and glean the list yourself, but I like to make the DM's job easier when I can.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
