Combining martial prowess and magical power, the Magus class is the Sterling Vermin Adventuring Co.'s 5e take on the swordmages, arcane archers, seekers, and wardens of earlier editions. If you want to play a warrior whose spells are as deadly as his sword (or axe or bow), the Magus is for you. If you want to play a mage who's dedicated to an esoteric society that taught her all she knows about magic and battle, the Magus is for you.

The Magus class is complete with 5 Eldritch Societies (archetypes): the Arcane Order, the Knights Stygian, the Primordial Seal, the Shadow Court, and the Sylvan Circle. Each Eldritch Society determines your magus spell list and even your magus spellcasting ability. In addition, every magus specializes in a particular Eldritch Armament. Together these two choices make every magus a unique combination of a specialized fighting style and spellcasting style.

You can also pick up a Magus class specific character sheet made by our very own Nathanaël Roux

Like the Magus class? You can find other Sterling Vermin products on DM's Guild!

I have a question regarding 'Spells Known' and 'Esoteric Eye'... Esoteric Eye seems to suggest that when I use it with a group of spellcasters I can 'learn each of those creature’s spellcasting ability'... how does that work with Spells Known? Say at level 2, I know three magus spells and I used Esoteric Eye - would I be able to learn their spells in addition to my current spells, would it be replacing spells I know already, or am I completely missing how this actually works?

Thanks!

Never mind, I realised my mistake! I understand - I don't learn spells from them, I learn what their spellcasting ability is - the number modifier - not their spells. Whoops!

Almost right, you learn whether they use Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as their spellcasting ability. I suppose I might need to clean up the language of the feature to avoid confusion!

Ok, quick question: Your list of spells you can cast include up to 6th (sixth) level spells, but the magus table only shows up to the 5th level for spells you can cast. Is this class not supposed to have 6th level spells or is the table not complete? Thnx!

The Magus, like the Warlock class, gets access to 6th level spells via a feature rather than through their Spellcasting.

Hi i noticed that the knight styagin in there spell list known Cantrips it states that they can use death shroud but in the description of the spell it does not list them. Is this a typo in the description or the spell list known for the knights?

The spell description contains the error, Stygian Knights CAN take the Death Shroud cantrip.

Hey there, I was just looking through the Magus again and I can't find any inclusion of an additional attack. Most martial classes get it at 5th level, and despite the spell slots and focuses I would consider this a martial class. Why not include this at 5th level or 6th level like the Bard's College of Swords does to subvert the power surge of level 5. I wouldn't mind play testing one of the options here as I intend on playing a Magus when I get the chance to.

The author said that the reasoning for that was you are supposed to use the cantrip attack spells which get a boost at 5th level and should supplement the damage of the extra attack from other half caster classes. Beyond that they receive War Magic at 7th level letting them use their bonus action to make an attack after using a cantrip.

The Primordial Seal Eldritch Society doesn't have the ability to use spellcasting foci listed in their spellcasting feature like the other societies. Is this on purpose and if so mind if I ask why?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H May 24, 2018 2:43 am UTC
CREATOR
It is intentional and the reasoning is purely fiction based. Primordial Seal practice a very primal and fundamental form of magic - they don't use abstract foci, they use components from a component pouch.

No worries thanks for the response, it just affects how i build one. Without foci I just gotta be aware I cant use a spell with a material component and my weapon in the same turn unless I use a 1 hander of course ^.^

With the new spells from Xanathar's, what orders will they fall into?

I will most likely do an update to the class sometime in the next 6 months which will include adding in the spells from XGE, some new magic items, and (if I'm feeling ambitious) a new Eldritch Society.

You assign classes to your spells along with the relevant Magus subclasses which I much appreciate. However, I just noticed, you give the spell give life to the shaman and from my recollection, you haven't made a shaman class and I am certain I haven't missed an official or U.A. release. So I was wondering was that a mistake or is there a shaman class you use in your games and which/who's Shaman class is it?

Shaman is a class I hope to make at some point. Consider it a teaser. :P

Possibly a small and pedantic point - Esoteric Eye detects the Spellcasting and Innate Spellcasting feature or trait. Warlocks do not have either feature or trait, they have the Pact Magic feature. This would mean Esoteric Eye cannot detect Warlocks. I imagine you did not intend this, so unless you did, perhaps a small update would be wise?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H March 25, 2018 11:37 pm UTC
CREATOR
Actually, Esoteric Eye does not detect warlocks. Warlock magic works weird and can't be easily detected by Magi. I imagine Magi find this *very* unnerving.

Hi, I have a quick question about Sorcerous Sentinel:

How long does the bonus to AC last? Is it just against the attack to which you are reacting, or for the whole turn, or for some other length of time?

On a separate note I'm loving the look of this class and greatly looking forward to playing one in an upcoming campaign. Thank you!
Customer avatar
Benjamin H March 25, 2018 11:39 pm UTC
CREATOR
The bonus to AC applies only to the triggering attack. The temporary hit points last until you complete a long rest or you gain a greater number of temporary hit points from another source (which is the normal rules for temporary hit points). Hope you got to play a Magus!

Hi! I've got a friend about to roll this in a game I'm putting together, and I was wondering with the release of Xanathar's and the new spells, what RaW class spell list should I use as a reference to provide my friend the use of the new spells from that collection?

I have a question about Death Shroud.

Given that it is a spell that requires concentration, how do the stacks work? Does a new cast of Death Shroud reset the amount of Death Shrouds on a target, or do they continue to build up?

If they continue to build up, this spell seems much too strong for a cantrip, especially when combined with War Magic.
Customer avatar
Benjamin H August 30, 2017 7:01 am UTC
CREATOR
Death Shroud works like other concentration spells meaning that if you cast it again you lose concentration on the previous casting and it ends immediately. Because of this, you cannot stack instances of Death Shroud.

Dumb question, but the 3rd level Eldritch Armament "Spell Sword" it says "you may
spend a spell slot to deal additional damage and render
the creature vulnerable to magical attacks." Is that legit vulnerability, or flavor for why they have disadvantage on saves? If the latter is true, which I'm sure it is. Might I suggest to change the wording to "susceptible", instead?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H August 12, 2017 5:35 pm UTC
CREATOR
It's not legit vulnerability. I totally need to rewrite that entry so I don't use a word that has a mechanical interpretation.

Is it correct that with the Occult Savant feat I can only pick spells up to level 2 since that's the highest level I can actually cast at 7? Furthermore is it correct that I can't change the picked spells later for something of a higher spell level? What spell is "DrainSV" in the stygian knights spell table?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H June 29, 2017 6:30 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Jan, yes that is the correct reading of Occult Savant although if you had multiclassed into Magus from a full spellcasting class you might be able to get something higher level than that. Yes, it is correct that those spells cannot be swapped out at later levels. The "SV" should be a superscript notation letting the reader know that the spell Drain can be found in that document.

Any chance this might get a script made for MPMB's automated character sheet? That would be pretty sweet IMO.

You guys will have to enlighten me - what's MPMB's automated character sheet? I can look into it but not sure if I have the resources to do that or not - also not sure if it's kosher with DM's Guild rules regarding exclusivity rights to the content posted here.

It's located here http://www.dmsguild.com/product/186823/Character-Sheet--MPMBs-fullyautomated-Printer-Friendly-character-generator

From what I have read it is open to people adding in their own custom coding for extra classes, backgrounds, etc. Plus it's a nice automatic character sheet, making picking spells, understanding class abilities, and keeping track of things very easy.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
