Combining martial prowess and magical power, the magi are spell swords, arcane archers, mystic marauders, and sorcerous sentinels. Every magus pledges themself to an eldritch society that inducts them into the magic arts and trains them in war. This versatile training means that magi are versatile adventurers and unpredictable foes.

Every magus is a member of an eldritch society. Eldritch Societies included in the full version of the Magus class include: the Arcane Order, Knights Stygian, Primordial Seal, and Sideral Cabal, Shadow Court, Sylvan Circle.

What's New in the 2nd Anniversary Update?

December 2018 marks the Magus class' 2nd anniversary on the DM's Guild. We celebrated the occasion by making the following changes and additions to the Magus:

  • Minor quality of life changes to class features.
  • Major improvements and revisions to the Shadow Court and many of the existing spells.
  • The addition of a new eldritch society, the Sidereal Cabal.
  • 20 new magical items.

You can also pick up a Magus class specific character sheet made by our very own Nathanaël Roux.

You can find the free trial version of the class here.

Maybe Im reading it wrong or mis understanding but is there any use of using the Aegis or Enspell on a weapon or armor that gives AC/ATK and DMG bonuses if they are higher then yours? The way Im reading it, you get a Bonus of 1/2/3 but is the weapon or armor is higher then that it does nothing? Or am I just dumb?

The benefit of putting Aegis or Enspell on a weapon or armor that has a higher bonus than the one granted by your Mystic Mark is that you can still remove the Mystic Mark for whatever additional effect that has.

"When you do, you regain your magus level + 1d12 hit points per level
of the expended spell slot and creatures of your choice
within 30 feet of you regain half that amount. Once you
use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest
before you can use it again."
so in clarification are you supposed to multiply the magus level and the d12 or just the d12s with spell slot level?

A number of d12s equal to the level of spell slot expended + your magus level.

hey is esoteric eye supposed to reveal the spellcasting modifier or how powerful the spellcaster is?

It reveals 1.) whether or not a person is a spellcaster and 2.) if they are, what their spellcasting ability is. It does not reveal their spellcasting modifier or how powerful they are.

Love the class :). Any chances for some revisions to account for the power creep in the game over the last few years?
Maybe an expanded spell list, e.g. things like zephyr strike could increase the spell-sword feel of the class while allowing for your single attack to feel more impactful?

I'm interested in revisiting the class but, with the upcoming edition change, am most likely to do an update when the next editions rules are out and I can tune to those.

I really like this class for the most part - However, I'm curious as to the exclusion of Steel Wind Strike from any of the spell lists. It seems like an auto-include to me for this sort of flavor.

Ranged builds appear to be lackluster so far. Eldritch Archer and Vortex Dart seem very situational, and party members would be affected by both. For the War Magic feature level 7, most subclasses have no damage/blast cantrips to support a ranged build. I am playing Sidereal Cabal, and I have True Strike to waste an action on in hopes of getting a crit on the bonus action. I am taking Wizard dip at level 5 to get Firebolt and additional utility. Also, don't take XBE for a feat like I did, because that makes War Magic moot. I will be begging for a change feat at level 7. Just my 2 cents, the class is dripping with so much flavor, but I just think the ranged builds need some love

I'm curious to see how everyone builds their Magus. Im rolling with a Human variant of the Arcane Order Mystic Marauder using a greatsword. im level 3, I have Great Weapon master as my starting feat, and I'm having trouble with my 4th level feat. Should I roll with more damage, some more hp? Im unsure. For reference with enspell I have a +7 to hit 2d6+5 greatsword, 16 ac, and 30hp. (Level 3) What are your suggestions, and how would you all build your magus?

Hi, looking to play this class in my next campaign, was going to play a sidereal cabal magus. My question is, was it intended to have the sidereal cabal be the only subclass that doesn’t need a rest for its lvl 14 ability? This seems like it could be very good with the right party. Also, has there been any new subclass additions since the sidereal?

It is intentional that there is no rest reset for this ability since it requires a specific set of circumstances to occur to even be useful in the first place and then eats your reaction for the round.

Have you added this to DnD Beyond? Can you?

Unfortunately at this time you cannot add new classes to DnD Beyond. There was talk a long time ago of incorporating the Pugilist, which might have opened the door for others, but I haven't heard anything about it in years at this point.

Yes, though for now assume the Scholar has the more up to date version of the cantrip.

My only critique is the lack of the extra attack class feature. Not 100% sure if this class was trying to improve on the Eldritch Knight or emulate the 1e Pathfinder Magus class

The intention for omitting extra attack is that 1.) you'll mostly be using your weapon attack cantrips and 2.) I wanted the round-to-round action of this class to always be casting spells AND attacking, rather than one or the other, hence the inclusion of War Magic. Hoping that only having one critique means you otherwise like it!

As for inspiration, my goal was primarily to create a true "spellsword" class. I had played Eldritch Knight in a campaign and felt very much like a Fighter with a couple spells I could very rarely cast. I wanted something that felt more 50/50 so I created the Magus.

I'm arguably late, but is there any reason to have war magic at 7th instead of 5th?
I explain: all half casters gain "extra attack" at 5th (with the exception of the full casting artificers that get something that tries to rise their power), so I see no reason to postpone war caster untill 7th. But I know this is playtested, so I guess there is a reason to wait until 7th? while I can see the case you made by giving magus cantrips, now all 3 other half caster have cantrips/access to them (paladin and ranger have to spend their fighting style, but since magus doesn't have it I don't think that is an issue in the comparison)

Alright, I've had the opportunity to play the Magus in a one-shot. The class itself was cool and I loved the flavor. I went straight magus though to get a better feel for it though, so no multiclassing shenanigans.

But while the class felt very unique, I couldn't help but feel that it was underpowered. The role and niche the class is intended to play can be filled by existing classes - except that they do it better.

As it stands, an Eldritch Knight 7/ Wizard X or just a straight Bladedancer would more or less do the same thing as a Magus, except they'd do it more effectively. Never mind the various permutations of Paladin/Sorceror.

I understand that the cantrips scale in damage, as does the Enspell feature, but it didn't feel like it was enough to bridge the gap. That and this class would IMO really benefit from a feature that lets it use the spellcasting modifier for attack and damage rolls. That way you only need to focus on two stats, casting + constitution instead of...See more

I'm still fairly new to D&D, so maybe this is a silly question. But I wanted a charisma based Magus, which means it's either the Primordial Seal or the Stygian Knights. What I'm curious about is when it comes to multiclassing, is there any reason *not* to pick up a point in Hexblade Warlock? The advantages seem to more than outweigh the level 20 Magus feature. Hell, Eldritch Blast alone seems almost good enough to make you a caster first and melee secondary.

What, if anything, am I missing?

It adds to the damage of the triggering attack so it matches the damage type of the triggering attack as well.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
