ADD TO WISHLIST >

Potions are as old as magic, having the right potion can make the difference between life and death for a party-literally.

Potioneering: Defined, Refined, and Usable has everything a player or DM needs to introduce Potioneering into the game including:

  • Every DMG Potion explained and with a crafting recipe

  • 40+ NEW Potions explained and with a crafting recipe

  • 3 NEW Feats for potioneers

  • Rules to craft any potion imaginable

  • The introduction of Power Components as crafting ingredients

Players need this to power up their characters and get the most out of their spellcasting class. DM’s need this to hand out NEW magic items for treasure, single use magic NEVER unbalances a game.

So I've had this one, herbalism, and alchemy, for sometime now, and I just realized that you don't have one for poisoner's kit. Any plans on that one?

Christopher C; I do have plans for that, I apologize for the length of time which passed between when you messaged me and my response. I have been traveling quite a bit and have not been very dutiful in checking in regularly. The current project I am working will take a few weeks to complete and then I will start a new round of Dms Guild material; I can make the poisoners kit a top priority for you, because I understand the feeling of wanting something and not having it readily available or even unreadily available.

Also, I would like to offer you the entire collection of my catalog including the poisoners kit (when it is complete); for free as complimentary copies. In order to do that I will need an email address which you can access; please set up a "spam account" for email or use an existing one you already possess; I will then instruct RPG Drivethru to send you complimentary copies of everything I release on the site for free. They will email any email address you decide to use with...See more

Hi, I think there might be an erata?

The potion of hill giant strength should give users a Strength of 21 for 1 hour.

Beyond that this seems pretty solid. I've gotten every piece of your work so far and I like it.

Chris, I really like this line of products; thank you for putting so much work into them. The wording of the feats is a bit confusing, I think. For example, under Hasty Crafter you state "you can pay 100% of the creation cost" which, for a common item, would be 50gp yet the table shows the creation cost is 100gp. Did you mean double the creation cost? If so, it should be reworded to "200% of the creation cost." I also think crafting items in 10% of the time and/or for 10% of the cost depending on the feat is a bit too good. Using Master Crafter, I could choose +1 Longsword as my Uncommon item and create one every two days for 50gp. That's better than the time it takes to craft a masterwork longsword using the Blacksmithing rules. Especially if crafting the sword is part of the process of imbuing it with magic. Perhaps a 50% reduction in cost and time? That would still significantly reduce the effort required. Also, how do the effects of these feats stack? For example, if I take...See more

Jeramie, first thanks and I hope the product is expanding your game. In the case of the feat, a potion is 50gp, but an item is 100gp; the feat applies to any magic item the character crafts; which would be 50gp for a potion but would be 100 for an item. Single use magic items are crafted at 50% of the cost to craft a multiple use magic item, which can get confusing and forced me to do math on this piece several times. To craft a +1 Longsword, it would be 500gp and take 2 days. If a player wants to focus on crafting items and uses their feats to achieve multiple creation feats, the effects stack completely. Feats are optional rules and players pay a heavy price to chose one, if they chose to play a character focused on the crafting aspect of the game they would be giving up adventure time with their party and ability score increases, they deserve all the benefits of the feats they choose. I will look into rewording them and possible do an update. For your time and attention on these sets, I would like to offer...See more

Can you explain a bit more how feats stack?
If you have hasty crafter the +1 longsword would be 500 gp and 2 days. If you have thrifty craft too, what would the cost and craft time be?

Vi, thank you for asking a question; the feats can sometimes get confusing, if we look at the original cost to craft a +1 Longsword the cost is 500gp and takes 10 days, use these numbers to calculate the benefits of the feats. The hasty crafter modifies the time required from 10 days to 2 days, if the same character also had the thrifty crafter feat, it would modify the cost from 500gp to 50gp. Thus the +1 Longsword takes 2 days and costs 50gp to craft. These feats "stack", they work exactly as potion master works; except they work on all magic items your character crafts. If I can be of anymore help, let me know.

Hey Chris, this is a very late reply, apologies. Thanks for the generous offer. Would I still be able to send you my email? Is there a way to send it privately via dmsguild?

Thanks!

Vi, it is never too late to reply and the offer is as valid today as it was when it was initially made. There is no private way on the dmsguild to send messages, you can send me any email address you like- create a new one and only use it once or use your junk email account or use a parent's email address (I have 2 younger than adult readers whom have done that). I am not interested in spamming or selling your information, I am interested in gaining a reader. Think about a solution which works best for you and let me know something over the next few days, regardless of how you choose to to proceed the complimentary copies will still come from the dmsguild site though as it is the best way for me to track how well my pieces are being received and it allows the readers to comment/review the piece after they have tested the rule sets in their games and seen them in action. I understand your hesitation in freely displaying your email on a website that anyone can access, having done this several times before without...See more

Hello!
I have to say a few things: first, I don't want to be rude, but I didn't buy the product. I could have, but it is far too specific, and there isn't a "Pay wath you want" option.
Second, I did see the preview, so I want to make you a small suggestion. I do not think that the crafting feats fit too well with the feat ethos of D&D 5ed. They are too narrowly specific, and to be a competent, versatile alchemist with them would require too much class focus on them. Remember: in this edition, feats are optative and come with a great trade-off: an ASI. "Hasty Crafter", for example, trades +2 in a stat or +1 in two stats to... make potions faster. It's just not worth it. I would have to acquire two or three feats to be competent, and I would lose too much in exchange. This is the spirit of feat chains of 3.5/Pathfinder, not the generalistic big bonus for a big price of 5th edition. I would suggest you to revise this, and add another bonus. Take an example in the UA introducing...See more

Esteban, thank you for your constructive criticism it is doubtful that there will ever be a pay what you want option for this piece; I have tried it before and 200 people want to pay nothing, that does not seem fair to me or the site. It is unfortunate that you do not like the information I offer as part the preview, I hope my next piece is more to your liking.

What is the difference between this and the Alchemy & Herbalism titles with the same subtitle?

Joshua, The difference is the type of items crafted, alchemical items are more akin to science then the herbalism items; for example, there are recipes for metal to craft armor/weapons, recipes for explosives, recipes for acid/inks/dyes and such. There is also a difference in the ingredient list, though many are the same there are quite a few which are different. Thus far all my pieces are subtitled the same, to demark them as mine and to show they are a working and growing set of crafting rules.

Oh no, I totally get why you use the same subtitle, that makes sense, I was just wondering what the difference were, since I generally think of alchemy and 'potioneering' under the same category I guess. I suppose then that I bought the wrong product; I saw the alchemy text and thought it would include potions.

Oh well, not a big deal. Thanks for answering!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
