Anti-Paladin Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Anti-Paladins are black-hearted, evil, sadistic, and villainous champions of chaos and destruction. They often stand at the vanguards of armies leading the forces of evil on campaigns of tyranny against all that is good in the world. The anti-paladin class was inspired by the original class designed by George Laking and Tim Mesford published in The Best of Dragon Magazine – Volume II (pp. 3-9, November 1981).

The anti-paladin class is most suitable for villains to seriously challenge player characters in an ongoing campaign. Dungeon masters should find the anti-paladin class a welcome addition to their gaming toolboxes.

FYI The Anti-Paladin class originally appeared in The Dragon #39 (July 1980). The appearance in The Best of Dragon Magazine #2 is a reprint.

Thanks, Mark! That makes sense, since the source I used was from one of the "Best of Dragon" magazines, which are compilations of previously released articles.

Thanks, Nox! That was exactly my intention when designing this character class.

Just got done rolling this class for a player who didn't enjoy "being bound to do good" by the PHB Paladin.

Gotta say; great job!

I paired this up with the Prince Background (found in Curious Backgrounds), and the Dirty Fighter feat (from Compendium of Feats.) and now i'm worried that even at level 4 this Character might be too strong. I'll let you know how it does in a duel with the Barbarian!

Also curious about Martial Advantage. If your target WERE your ally, how would we rule on the extra die??? I'm leaning towards throwing it in for the lulz

Thanks, Albert! The anti-paladin class should be a fresh change of pace from the standard character types. Indeed, with the right combination of feats and class features (multi-classing), the anti-paladin can be quite powerful. I originally meant for the class to only be for non-player character villains in my campaigns; however, there seems to be growing interest in running these character types. Please let me know how the anti-paladin works out as a player character in your campaign.

Albert, that is a very good question. As a ruling in my campaigns, I would allow the extra die if the anti-paladin had advantage on the attack, or if another one of the character's allies was within 5' of the target, and also hostile toward the target.

Though, you wouldn't be incorrect in your interpretation of Martial Advantage. I highly recommend adjusting the Anti-Paladin class features to fit with your campaign's flavor, or to provide balance. I would also welcome any feedback based on specific features and scenarios related to any implementation of the class.

Scott, I've made a Fantasy Grounds mod file for this if you'd like a courtesy copy to review, edit, and maybe add to your offering. Excellent translation from 1e AD&D.

Thank you, Tobin! Yes, I would check out the mod you created for Fantasy Grounds; however, I do not think the software is installed on any of my computers. I will check to see if I am able to acquire the software, and report back. I intend to add the poisoner's kit to the class's starting proficiencies in the PDF version, so you might like to add that to your Fantasy Grounds mod as well.

Well, I downloaded this one for free to check it out, and ended up paying for it after because I like it; it really captures the flavor of the original class. My only concern is that I feel that to match the class more perfectly, the anti-paladin should have Poisoner's Kit as a tool proficiency at 1st level.

I'd give the class 5 stars, though as the system for some reason won't let me, even though I've bought it twice. Maybe I need to wait...

Hello James,

Thank you for the review and suggestion - what a great suggestion! I will add the poisoner's kit as a tool proficiency at 1st level; I briefly thought about that while developing the character, but I was so focused on the lay on hands aspect of the character that I omitted the poisoner's kit. An anti-paladin character would be a truly dreadful foe after harvesting a few vials of wyvern poison to add to weapons.

I have heard the system could take some time after a purchase before a product review is enabled. Thank you so much for your contribution!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
