Kraken's Gamble - a Storm King's Thunder Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Kraken's Gamble

This adventure is designed for the Storm King’s Thunder campaign, and is meant to enhance your party’s connection to important events and NPCs. It is intended for use during Chapter 3 and 4, where your party is roaming the Savage Frontier, and has material enough for 1-2 full sessions. It brings your party in contact with the mysterious Kraken Society, and introduce them to the Golden Goose coin, which will make your players more invested in the events of Chapter 11: Caught in the Tentacles.

This download includes:

  • A 12-page adventure - set in the prosperous barge building town of Yartar, this adventure has your party interacting with everything from thieves and nobles to psionic prodigy's and even a dangerous Aboleth, to get to the bottom of a series of abductions.
  • Three new items - Aboleth mucous, the pincer staff and the sticky shield.
  • Two handmade battlemaps - showcasing Yartar's sewers, one map is a multi-encounter mini-dungeon, while the other is an aboleth's lair, complete with detailed mechanics for creating an exciting encounter.
  • Creature Index Cards - every monster (with the exception of the aboleth, which can't fit on an index card) used in this adventure is described on a printable index card, so you can focus on creating fun experiences instead of flipping pages.

Can someone explain how merrow move on land? I assumed it was just sliding around prone on the ground, but is there another way?
Just trying to justify using them in Oosith's lair instead of more Kuo-toa or even a beefed up Sahuagin.

Merrow are considered amphibious, but the Monster Manual stat block only gives them a walking speed of 10 ft. I might describe it as crawling / creeping / slithering across the ground. (So, yes, Sliding works.)

Great mod! The final fight (which I'm running tomorrow) looks like it'll be really fun.

Question, though: The mod says it's meant to foreshadow the Grand Dame (check) and the Kraken Society. However, unless the group is either a) very interested in detective work, or b) somehow gets it out of L.A. (initials for spoilers), which seems unlikely; I don't see how they'll find any link to the Society. Do you have any recommendations for dropping a more obvious hint, without it looking like the Society are incompetent? (like if they left an identifiable insignia lying around...heh, not the image I'd like them to have)

Just wondering about the sizing on the maps for Roll20. What size are they meant to be (i.e. 50x50)? Just having difficulty sizing these. The maps I've used previously in this package (Goldenfields) were pretty straight forward. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi Edward

The sewer maps are 40x30 inches at 72 ppi resolution (so 2880x2160). I hope that helps – and sorry for the inconvenience! :)

I have a question relating to the Glyph of Warding on the sewer
grate, how does Oosith cast this spell or the embedded Thunderwave? In 5e Aboleths do not appear to have the spell casting ability of previous editions, partly because it would be most interesting to have a Dispel magic in a glyph to deal with intruders relying on water breathings spells.

Hi Byrom

Sorry for the late reply – a new year and all that!

That one I'd chalk up to resourcefulness. A clever aboleth should be able to wring a spell out of an enslaved creature or get its slimy tentacles on a few spell scrolls. I love the idea of messing with the characters' water breathing spells – you should definitely implement that. In the end, you decide what powers the creatures in your game have – changing things up a bit now and then both makes the game more exciting and keeps your players on their toes!

Best regards,

J. A. Valeur

@Valeur R, I found a website with this PDF for download, which I'm sure hasn't done so legally, but I didn't want to put the URL here on the front page.
Is there a way to private message you?

This was so helpful in filling the gap between the structure of earlier chapters and the wide open nature of Chapter 3. It was also useful in giving me ideas for how to create my own adventures to flesh out other areas. I DM for three of my kids (ages 17, 13 and 11) and they LOVED it, so than you.

Hey, Valeur RPG. Regarding Stephen L's comment below, "I'm noticing a lot of typos in this. It would be nice (not to mention more professional) if you could find someone to proof these and update the files," I am a professional copyeditor and would be interested in working with you to proof your modules.

I just ran this with my group and they seemed to enjoy it, after nearly getting themselves killed (never split the party!). I would have definitely killed the party without the mistake noted below.

One problem: The stat block for the Aboleth ISN'T IN THE DOCUMENT. And the name of the aboleth was close enough to Otyugh that I used those stats. And the Otyugh is listed next to Merfolk as the last entry, so I just assumed that was the Aboleth. I didn't realize my mistake until I got home and started looking through the stat blocks for granting XP.

Recommend: Add Aboleth stat block. Rename the Aboleth to something that is different enough from Otyugh to be clear.

Aboleth is an SRD creature. You can get it from WotC free.

But Oosith is a modified aboleth. The standard aboleth in the Monster Manual doesn't cast Phantasmal Force. Might affect the CR of the creature.

Question.... in the sewers it says: "Floors: All vertical surfaces are slippery and require a DC 10 Dex Save or fall prone" Or something to that effect. Does that mean that floors that the party walks on, or the walls?

I'm pretty sure it's simply a typo. It's supposed to be "Floors: All horizontal surfaces are slippery and require [...]". That's how I played it, and it makes sense to me.

Is there a reason why the selectable document doesn't have the stat blocks? I'd like to copy/paste the stats into a word document.

It was soon after I posted my comment that I realised what I wanted to do was pretty redundant.

What I SHOULD have said was that I really love these guides you've put together for SKT, I've bought almost all of them and they have helped me immensely. I concluded Kraken's Gamble recently and my players loved it, it was definitely the thing that excited them the most so far. Do you have plans to release any more? I would love to see a guide for each of the Giant strongholds as I intend to run them all (assuming my players are interested in pursuing those Giant lords). Ironslag seems particularly troubling.

Just to let people know that Multiattack is missing from the Otyugh stat block.
Another useful thing to know is that only spells of 6th level or hire can cure aboleth's disease. One of my players cured Artan with lesser restoration before I read aboleth's stat block in the monster manual.

I cannot find the stat cards at the end of the adventure. Am I doing something wrong? The PDF I download only has 13 pages, not the 18 in the mini preview.

Thanks!

There are two PDFs in the bundle; a selectable PDF and a non-selectable PDF. The selectable one doesn't include the stat cards, while the non-selectable one does.

It seems the stats for the Giant Seagulls are missing. I'm guessing they're close to the Giant Vultures or Giant Eagles of the Monster Manual?

That's certainly an oversight on my part - I was sure it was included. But yes, use the statistics for Giant Vultures in the Monster's Manual :)

A giant vulture does more damage with its talons than its beak, which would be awkward for a seagull's webbed feet. I swap their damages and replaced talons with a wing attack.

I absolutely love this module! Clear, well-written, and with some great hooks that work in a lot of different storylines.

I have one clarification question about the sewers section. Can I ask it here or is it OK to email you?

OK, great. In the sewers section, the text states that the canals are 5 feet deep. On the map, is this indicated by the green color only? What are the gray tiles, then?

I have a gnome character who I don't think would swim through the canals - will he be able to walk along the edge and stay out of the water, or would he have to swim?

[SPOILERS FOR STK!] My players are telling me that their antics on the Grand Dame are the best parts of the campaign so far. I'm so excited that I've been able to foreshadow it with your module and that it will come back in such a big way later on!

Hi Daniel!

The canals are indicated by the green water, yes, and the tiles on either side of the canals are walkways, that the characters can move on. None of the party need to actually be in the water, but the kuo-toa might attempt to pull them down into the water with their pincer staffs :)

I'm glad your party enjoyed the Grand Dame, it's a fun little excursion! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
