I used this for my group last Sunday. I am a somewhat experienced DM, and my wife has played about as often as I have. She played one character in a party of five--the other four consisted of one entirely new player, one player on her third session ever, and another pair who had played a handful of times. I let the players decide their characters independent of each other, which resulted in two fighters and three rogues--this proved problematic, given the specific contents of the adventure, which I ran pretty straight. I advise increasing the availability of combat healing options, such as potions of healing, or directing your party to include healing options in their character builds. In particular, the encounter with the orcs outside the cave was very, very challenging for the party.

In my experience, low level parties can really struggle without access to healing. After level 3 or so, this is less of a problem, as most classes have access to self-healing, damage reduction or avoidance, or high...See more

Hey Colin,

thanks for the feedback! I unfortunately tailored it to a group of 5 that I had hoped would have at least one healer. In retrospect, I would think that adding a few healing scrolls or potions in the city before they head out would be fine, or using their abilities in herbalism or alchemy while at the ruins to make some basic healing potions would also be okay.

Either way, as the DM, if the inclusion of magic would benefit the party, then by all means, add away. As for leveling, I use the standard XP you receive for killing creatures and tackling tasks, so I guess it would all depend on how many people are in the party and how well they do at the skill challenges. If you wanted to use the milestone system, then after they are ready to bed down for the night in the ruins, or maybe after they escape from the bugbears, you can have them all level up.

The length of the adventure was kind of skewed, but is probably my fault. Being more familiar with the details and...See more

What's the recommended player number/level and expected play time?

Hey Charlemagne,
sorry for the delayed response! I geared this for all 1st level newbies, including a new DM. I would think about 4 players, in order to get a broad range of all skills and their proficiency in the adventure. As for play time, it can vary from one session to several. I made this adventure for my wife to try out, but unfortunately, we haven't gotten a chance to. So it really depends on how quickly the new DM/players pick it up.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
