Magic Shops & Random Item Rarity Tables

Create Magic Shops and Populate Them With Items

This a module for the Fantasy Grounds VTT software.

D&D 5E, many players and DMs ask, "What can PCs do with all this gold?"

The magic item economy is left to the vagaries of the Dungeon Master's Guide rules and many players/DMs are frustrated by the magic item economy of ol' having disappeared.

The 5th edition rules lean toward magic items being rare and hard to come by (as is the meaning of rare). In an effort to help players and DMs enjoy a system of acquiring magic items simply by purchasing them, I have created this module.

I did try to leave the spirit of difficulty present. Most adventures contain treasure parcels for characters to find and DMs can, of course, still populate their dungeons and various locations with treasure including magic items.

But if you're looking for a way to include "shops" or "stores" throughout your campaigns, or if you're just needing to grab a random magic item by rarity, here is your tool.

This Fantasy Grounds module is for use with the Dungeon Master's Guide but will work with the SRD Magic Items.  In the case where the SRD material falls short of the DMG, the program will just generate a blank link, but won't affect your enjoyment/use of this module.

ThanX!

When i go to activate the modules there are 2 different magic shops and random item rarity tables. one has -OGL after it. What is the difference between 5E magic shops & random item rarity tables vs. 5E magic shops & random item rarity tables - OGL?

Aaron:

OGL stands for Open Gaming License so that one ONLY uses the SRD (System Reference Document) files in case you don't own any of the other books. The other one uses the Dungeon Master's Guide, etc.

Hi there,

Do you have a version of this that works with the Xanathar's guide items?

Gregory, I don't have plans to add to the module at this time, but you could alter it on your FG table and just add any other magic items to the end of the tables, if you wish.

The way I do it, is I run ANOTHER shop and then just use the items to "restock" the original shop. I haven't figured out a way to do it other than that.

It seems you may have an incomplete entry under the Table Wondrous Item - Uncommon 4 [Bag of Tricks] seems to just be a place holder instead of a link to the actual magic item in the DMG.

Thanks for this. I'm sure I'll have lots of fun using this mod

Richard. That is not broken, that is a "[pull from another table whatever appears in these brackets]" thing. So if you roll a 4 on that table it's going to roll again on the "Bag of Tricks" table. Change your settings to manual dice roll, roll on that table, enter 4 and test it out. Cool huh?

I just bought this and it will only open as a media file. can I get it I some version that... it can be used in? I really want something to help me flush out the economy, something most of my players want but this is useless as a video and it won't open in anything else for me.

Edwin, sorry to here about that. It CLEARLY states in the description that it is a Fantasy Grounds module only. It can only be used for that program. There is no PDF. I will happily refund your money if I can figure out how to do that. I've never had to refund anybody yet. Let me look into that.

I have a ticket into DMs Guild to see how to refund. It's not clear anywhere I find how to do that. When they answer me, I'll let you know.

Wow! That was quick. You can get a refund by using the "Contact Us" link to customer service. Again, sorry for your trouble.

I'm fast. I care about my customers. That file is a .mod file meant to be used with Fantasy Grounds VTT, but if you just try to open it, Windows will think it's a movie file, which it's not.

You should change your product page. It says this is a watermarked PDF. Yet in the comments you state it is a fantasy grounds mod with no PDF available.. Very confusing and very misleading.

Sorry for the trouble. It shouldn't be confusing though when it clearly states it is a Fantasy Grounds module only. I'll see if I can make that statement BIGGER. Also I have tried MANY times to change that in the file settings. It keeps defaulting back to PDF. I sent in a trouble ticket on that some time ago. Out of my control, but again apologies for you having to deal with that.

I do believe that this module would help any dm, but could you post a preview screenshot? I need to see a example of a result shop to know if will blend nice in my campaign. Today I use a online generator that gives me a shop with description of each item but not it's price value. Your table gives a fixed price value or range for a item?

Magic Item prices can be rolled on a table, or you can use a fixed price based on the range of a particular rarity. Here are a couple images that should better give you an idea of the content.

Edgar. It's strictly 5E. But thanX for your interest.

If I'm not mistaken, all DMs Guild content must be 5E and cannot be made for previous versions as quoted here:

"Rules: You can use the 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons system. You cannot publish content in previous rules systems (OD&D, Basic, AD&D, 2nd Ed, 3rd Ed, 3.5, 4th Ed)."

Sorry David. No PDF. This is a Fantasy Grounds module that uses tables I created to create magic shops and also give DMs some flexibility with magic items regarding finding them according to rarity, etc. A greaot tool, but unfortunately not in PDF form. If you haven't yet become familiar with the Fantasy Grounds VTT, I HIGHLY recommend it. They have a demo version to check out. Also, spend a few minutes in their forums and you'll see how great that community is.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
