The Flying Misfortune - a Storm King's Thunder Adventure

The Flying Misfortune

This adventure is designed for the Storm King’s Thunder campaign, and is meant to enhance your party’s connection to important events and NPCs. While it is intended for a party of around 6th level, the nature of the quest is such that it fits easily with a higher level as well. It will put your players in contact with Felgolos, the bronze dragon that is encountered in Chapter 9 of Storm King’s Thunder, as well as the ancient dragon Iymrith, who plays a prominent role in the main plot.

Of course, you can also change names and locations to make this adventure fit into any other campaign world – as long as it has dragons and deserts. Enjoy!

This download includes:

  • A seven page adventure - split into two parts, this adventure first has your party squaring of with Zhentarim dragoncatchers and a bronze dragon, and later sneaking into an ancient dwarven city in the desert, where two blue dragons are laired.
  • Two new items - the netlauncher, a mundane contraption great for catching dragons and giants alike, as well as the magical pipe weed Yondalla's Delight.
  • Two handmade battlemaps - one is a 30x40 forest road map that has great general usability, and the other is a huge 100x50 map of the desert ruins of Ascore. Both maps come with and without grid, and the map of Ascore has both a DM and a player version.

It doesn't appear that I can leave a review for this module if I bought it as part of the DMs bundle. FWIW, this is a great adventure. I would give it a 5. I bought it and I ran it. The greed -> terror transition was awesome when they started to realize there were goodies they couldn't get because one of the two dragons was coming home to defend their lairs was classic.

Second question while preparing the module for my players: the module is said to be meant for characters between levels 5 and 7. However, at the end of the module, the players may end up fighting an Adult Blue Dragon, which has a CR of 16. Granted, players are supposed to run from the dragons, but I'm wondering how the encounter is meant for characters between levels 5 and 7, as a single rotation from an Adult Blue Dragon can one shot a player of that level.

Anything I'm not getting?

I'm guessing there's something I don't know or am missing, but I don't get the riddle in the Guardhouse of Ascore. Here's what the text says:

"Riddle in the Runes. A character who inspects the scribblings can tell that they were hastily carved, and a DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check reveals that they were probably carved with a sharp blade, and not proper mason's tools. Any character that reads dwarven can decipher the ancient dialect written on the back wall. They read: 'Brother of Delzoun, woe has befallen us. Dumathoin guard our heart now.'

A dwarven character knows Dumathoin as the dwarven god of secrets and protector of the dead, as does anyone who succeeds on a DC 10 Intelligence (Religion) check."

Now I'm aware of area 5, Dumathoin's Shrine, and figured the riddle had something to do with that area. However, there are already runes that help the players uncover the secret of its pyramid, and I don't see how the riddle in area 1 helps... I simply...See more

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
