Way of the Drunken Master - A Monastic Tradition for Monks (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Monks perfect their bodies, minds and souls via martial and spiritual paths often referred to as monastic traditions. These traditions were created generations ago by the original masters, monks who had reached spiritual enlightenment and desired to pass their teachings onward. These traditions are normally tightly interwoven with religious belief and sometimes carry certain restrictions on their practitioners: no meat, no alcohol, total abstinence, a vow of poverty or the like.

However, not all monastic traditions are religious in nature. Sometimes perfection and even enlightenment can be found in the most unlikely of places. Sometimes the wisest thought, or the most ingenious action comes from the lips of the fool, or in this case the mouth of the inebriated. To a Drunken Master the tavern is their dojo, a flagon or bar stool is their sword, and a night of drunken revelry is one night spent training to reach perfection.

It is unknown who the first Drunken Master was, or why this monk continued to seek perfection with the bottle pressed to their lips. Though still rare, this tradition has been passed down from Drunken Master to Drunken Disciple for many generations. Few who practice these arts in the modern age actually drink, instead clinging to the dry way of living known by most monks, and simply imitating the sway of the inebriated to throw off their opponents and strike with dizzying randomness. To a true Drunken Master this is a wasted talent. Why imitate the drunk when you can master the art of inebriation?

This archetype is focused on reactionary fighting and using the numbness and looseness brought on by inebriation to your advantage. All nearby objects are a weapon or shield to the drunken master, every stumble and fall, a tactical decision and every hangover a reason to celebrate.

This document also includes a varient rule for dungeon masters looking to add Intoxication to their game, as well as a table of average prices for different types of alcohol found throughout civilized lands.

This archetype is designed to be a functioning 5e version of the 3.5e prestige class, with more of the real martial art of Zui Quan baked in, heavily inspired by Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
