Treat or Trick

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In this adventure, the players take part in some spooky local festivities, but when a celebrant takes things too far, it’s up to them to save the town from a dark curse. Luckily for them, the challenges they must face are based on the festival games they have already played, and they will have the aid of enchanted costumes and the valuable prizes they’ve won!

The adventure is designed for a party of 4-6 second level characters, but each encounter includes notes on how to adjust the difficulty for more or less powerful groups of PCs.

Treat or Trick could take place in any village or small town, such as Phandalin, Red Larch, or even Sloobludop, but if you’re running it as a one-shot, or your players aren’t in or travelling to an appropriate town, the town of Willowton is included.

Contains 3 new Halloween-themed monsters!

I run a subscription box and I've been wanting to put some DLC in it. Would you be open to me buying this in bulk and distributing it to my customers via a promo code?

fantastic. Could you reach out to us at david @ diceenvy.com? We could arrange payment through there for at least 100 copies.

I think you should be able to purchase multiple copies here on the Guild.

I'll look into it. I've never bought in bulk like this before.

How easy is this to scale up for higher levels? Currently running PotA and I think my group should hit a lull just in time to fit this in for Halloween.

It should scale up to level 3 or 4 without much trouble. Beyond that might take a little more work.

I'm going to assume that everyone turns back to normal at the end of this and isn't stuck as their costumes for ever. Also how much XP do the PCs earn during this?

When the curse is lifted, yeah.

For XP, they earn XP for each monster defeated, as listed in the stat blocks. If you typically award quest XP, you can do so as well, but the adventure doesn't assume.

After the bugbear fight, do they get xp for bugbear or just the targets and any added goblins?

The bugbear certainly makes the fight more challenging, so award full XP for it. Any extra goblins are just extra monsters, so no reason not to give XP for them.

Played this last night. Imagine the shock of one of the PCs that the pumpkin he carved for the contest was going to animate into a monster - especially since he chose to carve the face of Vecna in it!

I expanded the choice of costumed NPCs to include knights and fairies. Our tough Tiefling Warlock kept getting pelted by 1d4 damage "fae bolts" from a formally-costumed-human-now-real- faerie's wand - complete with requisite pink star at the end!

There were even two NPCs dressed as well-known PCs of very high level! One of the players of one such PC (playing a low-level character in this game) was there to witness the commoners parodying his character and his interactions with the other PC! Priceless!

We did it in about three, with some of that being housekeeping from our ongoing campaign. If you have an engaging troupe of players, you can make this as long as you want it to be.

I was wondering if there was a Printer Friendly version of this? Was hoping to run it for Halloween.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
