DDAL05-02 The Black Road (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Caravans are having a difficult time getting through to Parnast via the Black Road.

Organized attacks by orcs and other monstrous humanoids working in concert with one another have folks baffled. Little do they know that an unusually intelligent hill giant, going by the name of Bad Fruul is to blame.

SEER has sent her emissary Hsing, to task your group to accompany a caravan with a very special cargo destined for the Shrine of Axes in Parnast, and to figure out who is responsible.

A Two Hour Adventure for 1st-4th Level Characters

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

New GM here... the time frame for travel/rest is very vague. Is there a set time table for Pre-Dawn/Dinner Time that I don't know about? Or is it left vague on purpose so it's at the DM's discretion whether the players get a long rest at all?

How is it for new players to D&D? Easy to jump into, or is there a lot of in-references to lore that may drag down the uniniated? If a player makes a mistake or if a party tries to go about in a different way, will the party be punished for it by the module?

The adventure is pretty linear and it's a good introduction to d&d. For a group full of first level the last encounter might be hard. There is absolutely no lore to be aware of or maybe who the zentarim are.

Was purchased by our Friendly Local Gaming Store as we start our AL program and I ran it as a start to Season 5 adventures. Was a great starting point for the season and was a lot of fun to run. I really enjoyed the non-combat encounters (Castle and other travelers) on the road, and the battle at the end was lots of fun with the logs rolling down the hill. I also enjoyed having the certificates for the magical item to pass out to the players, it's a great addition as we start up an AL program for those players who don't have a DMG.

(minor spoiler)

The characters join a caravan from an oasis, a tenday away from Parnast. At the oasis, they are being offered to purchase desert clothing. If that clothing is so important to get through the desert, how did they get to the oasis without it in the first place?

I'm new to D&D and I just downloaded this product. The product came with a 2nd file called Certs, which looks like some sort of code to redeem somewhere for magical items. Where and how do I or players redeem these codes? Are the items intended to be rewarded in the adventure?

In AL seasons 1-4 magic items came with a certificate which allowed trading. In seasons 5-7 certs still served that role, howered trading became legal without them.
Anyway, that's just a file to print and hand out at the of the adventure to those who gain this item. Which is completely optional.

I played through this adventure and thoroughly enjoyed it. The environmental challenge was a cool gem, and the story that is told through the enemies is more than I expected from a short adventure like this.

Best regards from Bethesda Studios, I wouldn't have found it otherwise. I like what I see and I might use it for my homebrew campaign. Great work.

I imagine this product will see a little more traffic lately given Bethesda's recent Elder Scrolls RPG plagiarism fiasco...

Overall I really enjoyed this adventure, my players unfortunately ran into issues with their dice rolling however. I particularly enjoy the use of weather and regional effects, and would love to see more of that.

I enjoyed this adventure quite a lot. It was my second AL stand alone as a player, and it was a good time. The one portion of it that could use some work is the final encounter. WE played it, and came pretty close to dying, which was great. Unfortunately it seemed to end very flatly. I was also a bit disappointed that there wasn't more of a focus on the exhaustion mechanic. If you add a mechanic to the game that has tanky warriors taking off armor during the day, there should be some encounter that takes advantage of that. i'm glad I played it, and I may run it myself. Nice work.

This adventure is great for the beginners. It shows how d&d is not just rolling dices and hitting monsters.

An excellent adventure. As a first time DM, this was a great adventure to run and everything I needed was there in front of me! It's a great mix of encounters with plenty of opportunity to expand the story!

An excellent adventure for beginning players and DMs. Probably one of the best modules written for AL.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
