Priestess: Ancient World Divine Class

Show the strength of your idol! Unlike clerics and paladins who go adventuring with just their holy symbol and mace at their side, a priestess (or priest) draws power from a holy idol which contains a fragment of their god. Like a magic item which grows and evolves along with the priestess, each idol has unique abilities and weird magic waiting to be unlocked to awe the priestess' allies and doom their foes.

Combining elements of the Cleric, Bard and Wizard, the Priestess is a unique new class from Jason Bradley Thompson, artist of the D&D Walkthrough Maps. Play a priestess for an exciting roleplaying challenge inspired by historical Ancient World cultures, or use priestesses as clever and deadly NPC villains and their idols as potent magic items.

* Perfect for the Forgotten realms lands of Unther, Mulhorand and Kara-Tur, or a Norse, Celtic, Greek or Egyptian campaign

* 5 Idol Aspects influence the way your priestess relates to their god: pray to a Praisehungry Idol, worship an Ecstatic Idol with sweat and passion, or sacrifice your enemies to your Bloodthirsty Idol

* Over 30 Enhanced Idol powers, such as Green Aura, Necromantic Aura, Idol of the Wilderness and Furnace of Baal

* 7 new spells, such as Kiss of Passion and Heaven's Thunder

* 2 new Divine Domains: Fertility and Sea (for both Priestesses and Cleric characters)

* Support for all Divine Domains from the Dungeon Master's Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Xanathar's Guide to Everything

* Bring your idols to life as golem-like warriors, cast spells on whole temples and cities, sacrifice cattle and much more!

UPDATED AUGUST 14, 2018: Version 1.4: Added idol powers for Arcane, Forge and Grave domains. Updated the Fertility and Sea domains with Cleric powers.

UPDATED MARCH 1, 2017: Version 1.3: Greatly simplified the class's power structure, replacing "divine boons" with "Channel Divinity." Added a new Enhanced Idol power, "Absorbing Idol."

UPDATED, SEPTEMBER 27, 2016: Version 1.2: Now includes 5 sample priestesses statted for use as NPC enemies or allies, ranging from CRs 2-10!

I really want to like the class, and I do for NPCs but for PCs it's far far too complicated and arbitrary. In my experience 5e fights last, on the long end, 5 rounds and the priestess doesn't really come into they're own until long after that. I enjoy the idea of having a class based much more around followers and static locations but it does make it extremely inflexible and requires a very specific game type and DM style to work well. In addition, many of the choices offered have options that are purely worse then others. Many of the abilities are situational and either overpowered or under powered depending on the situation but never balanced.

Maybe I'm blind. Where are the details for the Fertility and Sea domains? I see the spell lists for the domains but nothing about their powers. Thanks.

The Fertility and Sea domains currently only have the spell lists and the idol powers (in the idol power lists). Expanding them out to make them fully compatible with the Cleric is a great idea, and I'll do this in the update to the priestess, coming in August!

I would suggest making the new domains compatiable with Cleric as well as add the new spells to other classes so they arent so limited use. I would also suggest mayne adding amy of the new spells and Cleric domains that have come out.

Thanks for asking! Expanding the new domains is a great idea -- I'm doing that as well as adding the new domains from Xanathar's etc. I'll be doing an update in August!

The New Domains aren't in the piece that I was given, and those were a large part of why I bought it, so that was disappointing.

Generally, while the flavor of the class is nice, it feels like this was made as cumbersome as possible for PC priests. Having to lug around an idol is, by itself, a major drawback. The out-of-combat spell regeneration is far to limiting to PCs. All the boons fell a little complicated, as it feels like priests would only be useful or viable if fights are long and PCs are willing to sacrifice their precious actions to jump through all sorts of hoops, or want to clutter their party with a dozen hirelings. Furthermore, I feel like the class would be better served by adhering to Archetype methodology a bit more strongly. Making the Idol types into Worship Style/Method Archetypes and expanding upon them would probably go a bit further. Turning the Displeasure / Refresh Spells bits into Flavor aspects of the class would probably be much wiser. As far as Mortifying Idol goes,...See more

Thanks for checking out the class and for the feedback. I hear you and I'm thinking of making some changes to the class's powers, related specifically to boons and spell refreshing and addressing the "priests would only be useful or viable if fights are long" issue you mentioned. Hopefully I'll have time to release an update soon. I'm not planning to change the giant idols, though -- if it's a roleplaying challenge, or makes higher-level priests a role that's easiest for NPCs, I plead guilty as charged! ;)

This is a solid product for a DM or a player. I love the NPC priestesses in the back of the product, they add a new dimension to the village healer. I hope Thompson continues to create character classes for ancient settings. SOme thing I especially liked about this product:

High production value
Beautiful cover art by Konstantin Pogorelov
inspiring internal artwork
2 new clerical domains
A new monster, The Living Idol
6 new divine spells
5 NPC Priestesses

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
