Now with a custom character sheet specifically for this book, created by Guilherme Pantoja!

ANNIVERSARY UPDATE!

So, this book was released a little over 2 years ago. In the interim, I have gathered as much criticism and playtests as I could manage, and poured over everything that had been submitted. I then took a focused approach to this book to incorporate as much of the feedback as possible, especially for player options.

The focus of this book was always that the player options presented herein would be able to be dropped into any normal 5th edition DnD game, without any special consideration given to characters made with the options from this book. While I think the original release was close, it wasn't quite there, and there were a few issues that stuck out that remained unbalanced.

I have taken everything and rewritten everything, and while most of the player options will look familiar to those who own the previous version of this book, there will definitely be balance fixes so that you can take a lacer, a samsari, or any other option presented in this book, and drop it into your normal game.

In addition to the revisions made to the previous material, there have been many additions as well. There are new subclasses presented for the fighter and rogue, allowing them to learn some elemental powers and maneuvers. Each element's form list has also been increased to 50, rounding the number of forms presented in the book to over 200!

I can't express my appreciate enough for those who have helped in every stage of this process, including those who simply downloaded the book and ran games with it. The feedback I was able to gather was invaluable, and it really makes me happy to hear that the work I put into this book wasn't wasted.

So get out there and control the elements, and save your world!

Original preface:

Want an entire setting book to add elemental warriors to your world?

A blast a fire, a rush of wind, the roar of water, the rumble of stone.

The elements have always been a fantastic space to explore creatively for gamers. This book seeks to add all the elemental options you'd ever need for your 5e games.

This book is 178 pages long, and includes everything you need to set a game in the Forgotten Realms under the watchful eye of the Incarnate, a powerful being who can wield all four elements. The contents of this book include:

5 new races. The elemental races were born from the union of genasi and ancient barbarian tribes. They have since become diluted, but elemental blood still flows through their veins. Also included is the obake, a race of animal-like creatures from the Spirit World.

2 new classes. The lacer and the samsari are both elemental warriors, but approach the elements in vastly different ways. Lacers are fighters, using fire, wind, water, and earth to pummel their foes into submission. Samsari, by contrast, are more spiritual, more enlightened.

5 new subclasses. In addition to the five subclasses present for the lacer, and the three subclasses presented for the samsari, five new subclasses are given for classes from the Player's Handbook. Barbarians can follow the Path of Elemental Fury, gaining powerful elemental abilities. Fighters can follow the martial archetype of the Pro-Lacer, pummeling their enemies with elemental maneuvers. Monks have two new subclasses to join; the Ki Blocker is a wise warrior who learns to hinder their opponents by blocking ki paths in the body, and the Shihan Warrior learns to use special armor and weapons to be a protector of the weak and innocent. Finally, the rogue can become a Triple Threat, gaining elemental abilities and working in tandem with allies.

6 new backgrounds. Six unique backgrounds are presented in this book, representing both the feared and respected (bounty hunters, town guards), and the common heroes (air sanctuary, polar clan, the vast swamp, and the vegetable merchant).

New armor, weapons, and equipment. While all weapons and tools from the Player's Handbook are completely applicable to the world of Toril, new options are presented here for those who wish to specialize. New weapons like the boomerang and hook sword are listed, as well as new tools like the gemmanite ring, a powerful item which can bind and eventually engulf creatures in pure crystal candy.

Over a dozen new feats. New options for lacers of specific elements, giving you even more unique flair for your character. Learn to lace lava, metal, lightning, wood, and more elements!

200+ lacing forms. Similar to spells, lacing forms allow you mastery and control over the elements. Over 200 new forms are presented to give unique and powerful options for your character.

New setting rules and tips. New optional rules are presented, allowing players greater variability and versatility by allowing your elemental powers to be affected by weather and cosmic events. The ability to play as the Incarnate is laid out, allowing a player to become an extremely powerful master of all four elements. In addition, tips are given for DMs who wish to add lacers to other games, to help guide the DM in what it means to have a lacer in a campaign, and ideas for how to implement them fluidly.

36 new monsters. 36 completely new monsters are presented to challenge new and old players alike. The creatures cover the entire spectrum of Challenge Ratings, and can be tweaked for almost any type of encounter. In addition, a number of more minor miscellaneous creatures and NPC stat blocks are presented which can be quickly dropped into any game.

History of lacing in the Forgotten Realms. This book fills in gaps in the timeline of the Forgotten Realms, showing how lacing magic was created, how it reached its height, and ultimately, how it began to fall, until very few lacers remain.

This book is over 170 pages of vetted and critiqued content, and has been checked for balance in comparison to other 5e options, including those presented in the Player's Handbook. As much or as little of this book as you like can be added to any campaign of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, with no worry needing to be given over power levels or exceptional strength.

This has been a project I've worked on for over 5 years, and it's just incredible to finally see it come to fruition. So I really, really hope you enjoy it, and happy gaming!

- Alex Tanner

Great, but the 452 mg file size is huge. It's kind of a problem for my small tablet. I would appreciate it if you could find a way to reduce the file size to something more reasonable.

I appreciate the feedback, and I definitely agree it's a little rough. I will look into options for reducing the size and see if I can find a way to do it while preserving the quality of the book.

Thank you for checking it out though, I hope you are able to use it and enjoy it in the meantime!

Hey, just wanted to update the people in this thread, sorry it's taken so long but I've managed to shrink the file size by about 90% without a loss in quality that I've been able to find, so I've just put that version up. Hopefully it's much easier to work with! It's still larger than I'd like in an ideal situation, but any more compression and the quality starts to suffer.

For the level 1 firelacing form Searing Ray, it says "targets within range" yet the range it shows is "Self." Is this intended or supposed to be 120 ft like Magic Missle or 20/60 like the elemental strike?

Just wanted to let you know, me and my table are really loving the update you've applied to this. Though, and sorry if this is an annoying question, but are the clickable portions of the book broken? It seems like you're meant to be able to click to navigate like in the old version, given the underlining on some words, but they're not working.

Also, will there be a reintroduction of the printer friendly version?

Yes unfortunately the links are currently not working. When I get a chance I am going to try to get them fixed. The issue was that I had to export the PDF in 4-page chunks and then combine them together, as the document is so large that when I try to export the entire thing at once it crashes every computer I've tried it on. Unfortunately this process breaks the links. I'm going to see if I can find a solution that, but in the meantime I have added bookmark tabs to the PDF so you can navigate around more easily than before.

And I definitely plan to release the printer-friendly version as well when I get a chance, hopefully within the next week or so.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you're having fun!

And thank you for being so awesome and diligent with this! Again, we're having lots of fun, especially with the new Samsari. Though we are curious, what's meant to balance out the lack of 6th level and up 'spells' for them, aside from being able to cast precious spells at higher levels (and the flexibility of ki)?
Customer avatar
Alex T November 26, 2018 7:25 pm UTC
CREATOR
I somehow missed this message, I apologize that I didn't respond sooner.

The main power balance for the samsari is the flexibility of their ki points and how they refresh on a short rest. No magic-user in 5e can cast more than one of the few high-level spells they get each day. That's a core part of the system, and even the warlock, whose spell slots refresh on a short rest, can only cast their higher-level spells once in a day.

I started down a similar road for the samsari, but ultimately decided that it was hewing too closely to the warlock, when they are really meant to stand apart as a class on their own. So they received additional ki points and more flexible ways to use them both for your own class features as well as synergizing with other magic-users in the party. Ultimately, the flexibility of the samsari's ki points are what give it power; you can upgrade your forms to 9th level so long as you have ki points, and can refill them on a short rest, or you can use many low-level...See more

Ha ha, and I'm sorry i missed this for so long. I didn't think to look back after you didn't reply for a while. I appreciate you sharing your design ideas~

Selfishly, I admit that I was curious about your opinion because we use a severely revamped class system in my games, most of the time, which rebalances magic. To give you an idea, magic uses now use spell points, can only use 6th level and up spells once, and regain spell point son a short rest. Spell points are redistributed to cover this fact. I want to use Lacers and Samasri in this system and have been working on how to re balance them to work with this fact. So far simply giving them more ki has worked out, but I wanted to know your thought process so I could design as needed.

Thank you for your time~

Another thing I noticed is that the Firelacing form "Burn Metal" doesn't specify how much of the metal is burned, logically, using Burn Metal should only "burn" a certain area of it. As of RAW a firelacer can initiate burn metal on a metal wall the size of the eiffel tower and everyone touching it will get burned.

Just saying, Combustion lacing does very little damage in one hit compared to Lightning lacing, which takes the same amount of feats. The only benefits I can see to being a Combustion lacer over lightning is that you don't need your hands free to lace, and its an area of effect. I understand that it only needs to be initiated once and then you can use it until you lose concentration. But it still does very little damage to individual targets with each hit.

Hey thanks for the feedback! You're right, and the feats are something that I have heavily overhauled for the update coming out in less than a month (unless I get slammed at work, but that's the hope). While I originally justified the return of feat chains from previous editions, ultimately I've come down on the other side and decided that they aren't worth it, and have returned all feats to not requiring other feats in order to take them (most of them still have requirements).

Thanks for checking it out, and keep an eye out in a month or so when the update launches!

Two questions regarding lacing abilities
1) Air Funnel - says " If the object would strike a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the object strikes the target and stops moving. In either case, both the object and the creature or solid surface take 2d8 bludgeoning damage". What happens on a successful save? The creature dodges and the object keeps moving?

2) Flame Dagger- Does the form end when you throw the dagger or does it just continue for the full minute even after throwing it?
Customer avatar
Alex T July 18, 2018 2:15 pm UTC
CREATOR
1) That is correct, the object continues on its path until it reaches the end of the line or strikes a solid object/creature.

2) The form does end when the dagger explodes.

Thanks for checking it out!

Hey, just wanted to say I love this book. I was thinking of running a campaign based off it sometime soon. I saw in some earlier comments you mentioned a balance update. Hey there!

I needed to clarify something in this compendium. Does Elemental Strike counts as a Lacing Ability thus making it magical? It would make sense if it is, since only people who can Lace are able to perform this ability.

We had a whole debate on our table about this since my DM ruled that only Forms are counted as magical. Thanks in advance!

Hi Sara! It is the intention that all lacing is magical. Hopefully it didn't cause too big a problem at your table! If it seems unbalanced or someone has figured out a combination that caused that to be a problem, I'd like to hear about it, just shoot me an email and I can take a look at balance.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
