Enter the world of Dungeons & Dragons without spending a penny!

Following on from the best-selling A Most Potent Brew, this second-level adventure is designed to work with the free basic rules offered by Wizards of the Coast. You and your friends can explore, battle and roleplay without having to buy anything other than snacks, drinks and maybe some pizza for the DM!

Uncover ghoulish horrors at Havel's Cross

When a group of archaeologists put out a call for adventurers to help them escort a valuable artefact back to civilization, nobody expects anything out of the ordinary. However, our heroes have more than mere bandits to deal with at Havel’s Cross...

Undead monsters roam the night and an ancient artefact stirs within a long forgotten temple. Getting to the bottom of the mystery will require a strong sword-arm and an even stronger stomach.

Hello everyone! Not sure if accepted to comment like this, but I too have downloaded this adventure and have loved it! I make maps as a hobby, and sometimes post them for others to use. I recreated the "Temple of Doresain" map as found in this one-shot in my own style (which is designed to work well for Virtual Table Tops and to-scale printing). That map can be found as a PWYW item on DriveThruRPG - just search for "Temple of Doresain" or "Northern Cartography" and you should be able to find it. I hope it is of use to at least someone - cheers!

This was the PERFECT adventure to introduce my new player! Thank you for making it! Really nice visual format. Something to aspire to, despite the small grammatical mistakes.

Enjoyable 6-8 hour adventure. You could finish this in under 4 hours if you play quickly. There's a surprising amount of depth to this adventure, and the few NPCs in here are fun to run, and the combat encounters are well thought out. There's room for you as the GM to add some flair if what's here isn't enough. I first got this for free but liked it so much that I had to return and toss a coin to the fine folks at Winghorn Press. I will be trying out their other adventures, and I'm stoked to see what else they've cooked up!

A good romp, that has everything a D&D One-Shot needs. It took us 7 hours to complete, but I guess you can do it a lot faster with an experienced group.
The story is well grounded in lore, the first fight scenario is classic but gives a ton of tactical opportunities. The main NPC represents the quimzical gnomes of FR spot on. The main act contains a nice little Indiana Jones myystery and a boss fight that will make your level 1 and 2 characters wet their breeches. Full five stars!

This is really good! Started out with it for some players who wanted an introduction to D&D, and it was perfect. Thanks!

Really fantastic one shot, I ran this for a brand new group with a few minor tweaks and added a couple of characters and they had a blast. Great work, very impressed!

Great adventure, I hope my players will like it as much as I did.
Small debug of totally irrelevant details:
- THE ALTAR: The Bowl of death is described as "onyx" first and "obsidian" later. They are both black stones, but different.

I'm not going to add on what the other DMs said about adjusting the encounters. I just wanted to say that the puzzle-solving thingy was simple enough for me so I used some home-made props! I started with three bowls on which I taped some elvish-phrases written on paper. I then prepared a small box in which I put a jelly-stained knife, eggshells, a mortar and pestle and since I did not have chicken bones I used spaghetti! My players loved it.

I'm going to use this adventure as an oneshot for my first time DMing. The party consists of six players, and they ask if it can be lvl3. What do you suggest for scaling the encounters. I've looked at several online encounter calculators... but so far I'm not sure what the best course of action is.
Maybe making the hobgoblin a hobgoblin captain and o e of the three ghouls a ghast? And then buffing up Calder with more HP and higher level spells?

We really enjoyed this adventure, but as some of the others said, you may need to make some adjustments to the amount of enemies or their stats dependent upon party size. I ran 2 level 2 players, and it provided a good challenge as written. If your players are into horror, this adventure is a good choice. It is easily tied in to your campaign setting in any number of ways, I had an NPC friend of the players send a letter that his friend (Landy) was in need of aid.

We use Roll20, so I converted the map to a PNG file, as well as utilized a generic map for the Havel's Wood Inn.

Thinking of running this adventure this week, but looking at the combat encounters, it seems a like it'd be a deadly or at least hard encounter for a group of 4 lvl 2s (I used one of those encounter calculators after wondering myself, and it agreed). The goblins seem doable since they retreat after half of them die, but 3 ghouls before the BBG? Since the path to the bone chamber leads right through the life room, they seem unavoidable. Has anyone encountered problems, TPKs and the like? Or does this just look intimidating up front, but work out alright?

My new party really enjoyed this adventure. Nice atmosphere and a fun little puzzle. They had some difficulty with the goblins which was great and made for a good encounter. Calador went down fast. I am planning to run this again and have beefed him up a bit. The provided maps are good but not suitable for miniature play. I got an inn map, created a temple map, and a temple basement map for the encounters.

Great little adventure. I've run it twice now. All of the encounters throughout are excellent with the exception of the boss battle. Both times I've run this, Calador has rolled low for initiative. In both games, he's been dead before it reached his turn due to the relatively low number of hit points he has. He has a fantastic ability to create Ghouls as an action (and let's face it, there's a room full of bodies to work with) but he's been dead in the first round both times. It didn't detract entirely from a great adventure but it runs the risk of anti-climax because of it.

Also - very disappointed in the map provided for the Tavern and the lack of map for the Temple (even though it may not be necessary battle wise, there are many details and rooms that would in handy for players to visualize)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
