Doorway to Darkness - Adventure

As you approach, the miners themselves appear from their hidey-holes around the ruined camp. They are haggard and hollow-eyed, barely able to lift the picks and shovels they've clearly been using as weapons. They are unwashed, muddy and stinking - they look little different to the undead that they have been fighting.

Shrouded in damp blankets and shivering, they stare at you silently, even disbelievingly. There is only one left among them who appears to have a little iron left in his spine. He tightens his grip on his pick and steps forward.

“Are you here to help?”

Some doors should never be opened...

A group of miners uncover a dark secret and find themselves fighting for their lives as the dead walk again. Can the party rescue the survivors and stop an ancient evil before it spreads across the land?

Doorway to Darkness is a 3-5 hour adventure for characters of 2nd-3rd level. It features roleplaying, traps and horrifying combat encounters...

I ran this for my group a few years ago and they loved it so much I'm planning to rerun it for a new group later this week, so I was surprised to see your blog post explaining that you weren't very happy with it. I admittedly didn't use all the boxed text so we dodged that on, but you say you're unhappy about the map - what would you do instead today?

Hi Anthony, I've had a few folks tell me how much they enjoyed this adventure after I wrote that blog post. I think the central thread of the adventure is good, and some of it is more around boxed text and a few structural things. In terms of the map, it doesn't really encourage you to explore the mines at all as the adventure railroads you toward the conclusion.

One good suggestion I got was that a vertical map might work better. If I ever re-write this adventure, I might try that.

So glad to hear you had so much fun!

I just played the adventure for a group of 3 lvl 4 (adjusting the encounters and adding one ghast for the final encounter), still young players; it took us about 3h and a half to finish and they had a blast! It was really fun and a cool one-shot. Thank you!

So I've read the preview and absolutely love the undead mine idea. I'm going to try to get some of my clan mates together to play it. The one thing that concerns me a little is expandability once the campaign is done. I'm a new DM so I primarily use modules for my adventures, and I'd really hate to throw out a good setting. So long story short, can you recommend any good modules to play that I can easily link to after this one? Possibly to create a narrative of a larger undead uprising.

Hi Alton, my 3rd level adventures "Shadows on the Long Road" and "The Lurker Beneath Red Larch" are both horror themed adventures, and both have undead monsters.

Nice, because of the hook of the long road, I can swap it to going to Triboar from Longsaddle and have them do the Lurker while there and then get hit with the Long road quest on the way back.

Hopefully by then I will have some ideas on where to take the campaign. I mean I still have to get the lazy buggers to do the first quest!

Thanks M.T.!

I purchased the adventure, but the review tab still states that I can't give a review until I buy it... So, my review--

This is a short & creepy adventure. The descriptions and NPC interactions invoke a great atmosphere that is supported by the combat encounters. The backstory is nice. It could have been integrated a bit better by including remnants of the "former occupant's" work in the last room.

I'll give it 4 stars & would love to run it with my group if we need a 1-shot or when we reboot & start a new campaign.

Many thanks ESB! I'm glad you liked the adventure, and I hope you get a chance to run it with your group!

(I've also noticed that the review tab on DMs Guild no longer works immediately after purchase. If you go back there a few minutes latter, it seems to be enabled again.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
