Seeds of Chaos
The Horror of Horticulture

Valentine Manor is beauty entrapped in architecture. The lavish stately home is renowned throughout the realms, and its gardens even more so. However, despite its famed beauty something has found its way into the garden and corrupted its allure. Could it be something to do with the new gardeners, or something even more sinister?

A 4-hour adventure for 1st-4th level characters

This was the first D&D game I ever played in and now I'm looking forward to running it myself!
Two small things I noticed reading through the document, just in case - the "animated tree" is called an "awakened tree" in the MM, and "bine blights" should be "vine blights". :)

Hi! I downloaded this adventure and think it's fabulous, I'm planning to run it to my friends as a first time DM! Very excited.

One question though, you mentioned your party was 7 players and I'm planning to run it for 4 so I figured I would need to adjust the combats, I got to the first battle in the kitchen garden (3 Scarecrows). Each scarecrow is worth 200 XP. If I understand the DMG correctly that means that for a party of 7 the effective XP of the battle is 900 (200 X 3 X 1.5), when an encounter of DEADLY difficulty for 7 level 1 characters is only 700 XP. So what's going on? Did I get this completely backwards or is this incredibly difficult? Is this not built for 1st level characters?

I find that the DMG is rarely correct when it comes to building encounters with XP (or when calculating the adventuring day, or CR for that matter)! I'd suggest dropping a creature from each encounter, or halving the hitpoints of each creature involved. I'd also go for milestone levelling (after solving the bridge puzzle) rather than counting XP. Of course, if you'd rather use XP, that's up to you!

Page 4 lists the Invisibility spell as pg. 243 of the PHB, but it is actually found on pg. 254.

Hello, I am a somewhat new DM with a large group around 7 just like the one you mentioned in the intro to this adventure. I am planning to run this with around 3rd or 4th level players would I need to do a lot of challenge adjustment from what is already written?

Hi Zachary! I do think you’ll need to make some significant changes. I’d recommend doubling the number of creatures in each encounter for group fights, and doubling the hp of creatures for boss fights. You might also consider raising the DC of all the skill checks by 2-3, depending on the PCs

I am enjoying this so far, but i am foreseeing a problem next time our group meets. There is no alternate method of reaching the topiary. No one in my group has theives tool and the check says to open door you need dex cjecl with thieves tools. there should probably be an alternate check dc for breaking the door or the lock or something. Aside from that it's been pretty great.

Hi Saki,

Good point! I'd probably allow a DC 14 Strength (Athletics) check to barge down the door. As this is an introductory adventure, the skill checks are there mostly to introduce new players to the idea of skill checks!
Glad you're enjoying it!

I've had a review which implies the fan made .mod file doesn't download or work correctly!
If other people are experiencing this please contact me. I don't use fantasy grounds but was so grateful of the fan made content that I thought I'd make it available.
If anyone has ideas of how to fix this please let me know!

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
