The Claw of Winter - Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Claw of Winter is a murder mystery adventure set in a remote monastery where something terrible has gone wrong. Two new and unique monsters make this adventure a thrilling experience for players, and a great value for any DM.

High in the Stormhorn Mountains lays the monastery of Chauntea, a place of worship, hard work, and careful study of nature. When a grisly murder occurs, and a noble-born pilgrim is the victim, the characters must track down the killer, no matter who - or what - it is.

Darkness has come to the monastery of Chauntea. A mysterious death could bring trouble to the monastery, and the forest kingdom itself. Battle the elements and solve the mystery before it's too late!

What's Included:

  • The Claw of Winter adventure for characters levels 5-10

  • A brief background of Cormyr, The Forest Kingdom

How long is this adventure?
Can you give a rough time estimate for how long it takes to run the adventure?
Thanks

This adventure should take less than 30 minutes to prepare and should run about 4 hours.

It was designed to be run in a convention slot at the Gateway 2016 convention in Los Angeles.

Our group played about half this module last week in our homebrew campaign and really enjoyed it. As the setting was our own, the starter hooks were altered a bit, but the story is very portable. We had a blast with Cracktooth and his "cattle" in particular.
I do have one question though. In the victim's room, what was hanging in closet on the broken/missing hook? I haven't been able to sort that out.
One comment: although I get the "overwhelming power of Chautea" at the monastery, it gets a lot less reasonable to block fundamental clerical/paladin spells like Speak with Dead, etc. for the whole adventure - or away from the holy centre. Any thoughts of providing some guidance if those powers are allowed to work in the story? I've added some ad hoc material as just shutting down powers seems a bit heavy-handed.
Will keep an eye out for more of type type of work though. Great fun!

(Spoilers for adventure). The victim's secret lover hung his breastplate and gear on the hook. It was too heavy and snapped off the hook breaking a buckle. The buckle is a breadcrumb that is one of the ways that Adventurers can discover the victims secret lover.

Re: Speak with dead: If certainly shouldn't work on Leara, as her soul has either gone on to Chauntea, or (and this is my reading) been consumed by the monsters.

I would rule any attempts away from the holy center (the other victims, for example) to either have their souls already with chauntea or destroyed. The is an in-universe explanation that might be more palatable.

More powerful spells, like consulting mystic sages or directly speaking to a god, are more troublesome. Here are suggestions for divine magic that calls for answers. Beware: the gods no not speak very plainly!

Sune/Chaintea: (love/earth domain) An image of a rose on a grave, growing out of the snow.

Thank so much, John. That's truly an above-and-beyond response.

As it stands we've since played another session and we had to ad-lib quite bit, but it wound up well. We've suspended the game until our next session as the Boss Fight is unfolding in unexpected ways.

Everyone seems to be enjoying it though.

Cheers,
J.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
