Triboar Region Maps

Suggested Price $1.00

Update: This is now 3 pdfs, 2 in original colour and black and white, and 1 with a parchment texture backing.

This was my first attempt at making a hand-drawn "realistic" map characters might see in the Forgotten Realms. It's of the Triboar area, predominantly focusing on the area around the Starmetal Hills. It will hopefully be of use to DMs playing in the area, including DMs expanding from Lost Mine of Phandelver or Princes of the Apocalypse, both of which are set nearby. It will also be of use to those running Storm King's Thunder, as Triboar finds itself a focal point of that adventure.

Close attention has been paid to remaining true to the source material. The map is based on Mike Schley's map from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, and I've created it using techniques from Jared Blando's "How to Draw Fantasy Art and RPG Maps". I'm not a professional map maker or artist, so keep that in mind before forking out the cash. Distances are as accurate as I could make them, taking in mind that the source materials are inconsistent.

Four maps of the area are included (and are of exactly the same area), in both colour and black and white versions:

  • A player map of the area
  • A DM map of the area, showing additional locations and which Forgotten Realms product to look in for information about them
  • A player map of the area including tracks to and from the non-canon settlement of Twilight Tor (based on the Neverwinter video game and the Demihuman Deities source book)
  • A pre-"parchmenterized" version of the map, which is the hand-drawn version before a border was added and it was soaked in tea to look like parchment.

The scan quality has been improved since the initial upload: check out the Full-Size Preview for an idea. As an additional disclaimer, a lower resolution version of the player map is available for free via Deviant Art.

For those interested, I also have a map of the Waterdeep region, a close-up of the Ardeep Forest, and of a section of Cormyr available here on the DM's Guild.

Hope this helps someone with their campaign!

Very nice work. Like the map style and what you've done for the reference lookups. If it's possible, I would suggest looking at a layered .PDF where the reference texts and hex grid can be on their own separate layers (maybe the map trails as well) for print/view.

I liked what I saw in the preview.

KanzenAU, do you do map work for hire? If yes, are you interested in working on a long term project?

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the good feedback! I don't generally do map work for hire - simply because this is the first one I've ever made! This is just something I've done in what time I have spare, and I'm not sure if I'd have enough time for any long term projects. However, that said, if you want to send me the details of any project you're looking for artists on, you can send me a private message via my account on Deviant Art or the forum at (or here if that's possible), and I'll happily let you know.

There needs to be B&W versions of these maps. So if I print them out it saves on ink. But other than that I like the maps.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
