D&D 5th Edition Oriental Sourcebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This sourcebook is a conversion of the original Oriental Handbook.  I realize that there is other oriental content.  I did not review any of that content when creating this, so any similarites are conincidental.  Enjoy and let me know of any issues or edits.  It has not been fully platested.  I will make regular updates as my son completes more artwork.

It contains:

4 new races – Korobokuru, Nezumi, Spirit Folk, Vanara

5 new classes – Samurai (with 7 different clans), Shaman (with 19 different domains), Shugenja, Sohei, Wu Jen

4 new Monk monastic traditions – Henshin Mystic, Shintao Monk, Tattooed Monk, Yakuza

5 new Fighter martial archetypes – Battle Maiden, Blade Dancer, Iaijutsu Master, Kishi Charger, Weapon Master

1 new Ranger archetype – Witch Hunter

2 new Rogue archetypes – Ninja Spy, Shadow Scout

31 new feats

New armor, weapons and equipment

86 new spells

63 new monsters

Hello there!

Can I please get a clarification on something?
The spell Create Spring (my favourite of all of them), states that it puts forth 6 gallons per hour and that one can't be created within 100 yards of another.
Is the water for the spring magically produced from nothing, or is it drawn from the ground (hence the limitation).
I'd prefer the former, but that would make it very powerful, especially with no consumed component.
Could it instead state that the water is produced from nothing, have a costly component, and perhaps upcast for more water?

So, there is a lot of work here, most well done. The Shaman rework, the Samurai rework, the shugenja and the Wujen, all a lot of work, and all well presented. These form the core of the work. The bonus monster stats at the end of the book are a real boon, and all represent a ton of very good work. The publisher did not shy away from the hard work here.
The Shaman represents a Oriental cleric, so I thought the domains were well thought out, and were a lot of work. Definitely not the easy way. The best current iteration of the Shaman class, IMHO.
For the Wu Jen and the Shugenja, some of the best versions of each. My only issue here is the clunky elemental mastery mechanic. Still, it's a faithful import from 3.0 to 5e, and the powers are well written.
As a generic OA supplement, the entirety is written without mechanics like "Shadowlands Taint" or inclusion of the Shadowlands. That's a bonus for settings that don't want to be tied to those mechanics.
Now my gripes.
So first...See more

Thanks for the comments. It was so long ago when I did this. Haven't thought much about making any updates. There is so much good information out there on all this stuff already.

Hello there, great product thank you but I have a few questions as I seem to be a bit of an idot here, 1st Under feats you have prerequisites for some of Ki, and Martial arts, where are these feats?

2nd: Under Wu Jen you have listed under features on the table Arcane Recovery but there seems to be no record of it.

I know I am probably being stupid but if you could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Thank you for the hard work and this is an excellent piece of work, I am at this point trying to put it into fantasy grounds for a world I am building.

They are abilities already explained in the Players Handbook. Ki is a monk ability and Arcane Recovery is a Sorcerer ability

Great that you did this! I've been putting together a 5e campaign and trying to use the 1e Oriental Guide for character creation. Thanks!

What monsters are in the book?
Are they just monsters from Kara-tur/Oriental Adventures redone for 5e or are there new ones?
Any Korean monsters?

They are all the oriental monsters that were in the original 3.5 Oriental sourcebook. The full size preview has the table of contents that lists them all.

I agree, I hate it when people rate things and don't give a review. I would like to know there perspective as well.

Hopefully the person that gave a two star review will at least tell me what they thought was wrong.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
